Lesson 4-1
Introduction lesson covering Key Words and Expressions in both English and Korean.  Ppt and worksheet.
Word Shark Hangman game.  Your usual hangman, just with sharks. Reviews some of the new vocabulary.

Lesson 4-2
Disappearing dialogue for memorization practice. (from Look & Say)

Lesson 4-3
Connect 4 game in pairs. I printed out the blank boards and put them in a plastic sleeve to be reused. I showed my students how the game works by using the demo ppt (Just for the basic mechanics of the game). I thought the demo was a cleaner version of the game. You can also just use the example one from the main ppt to explain the game.

Lesson 4-5
Dragon Hunt. Things you need: animal mask (I used a dragon, but you can do any animal) and a blindfold. Each team selects one person to be blindfolded. After they have been blindfolded, the teacher chooses a random student to wear the dragon mask. The students on the blindfolded team have to direct the blindfolded student to the dragon mask using only English (no Korean or touching the student). Time each group, and the fastest group wins. You can write direction sentences on the board if your students struggle a bit. (Go straight. - Turn right/left. - It's on your left/right.")
I got the mask from here: http://www.mrprintables.com/dragon-masks.html
This site is amazing. If you want other animals: http://www.mrprintables.com/printable-animal-masks.html

Lesson 4-6
Treasure Map. Thanks to janet1992 for the original idea. I made my own version that is a little more detailed. Students choose where to put the 'Start' pirate ship and the ending treasure. Then, they write directions how to get from the ship to the treasure. I required them to use: Go straight _____ block(s). Turn left/right. It's on your left/right. It's behind/in front of/next to/between the _______.

If your class is quick about finishing this activity, there are two way to extend it. First, you can just have them decorate the map. Second, instead of gluing the treasure, have students glue just the 'start' pirate ship, then write directions to where they want the treasure to be. Once all students have finished, have them exchange maps, and the new student has to read the directions and then glue the treasure in the correct spot. My students liked doing this because they got motivated to write long and convoluted directions to mess with the student who would read it. ^_^

In the ppt, I included the finished scanned copy of the worksheet I made, the original (so you can move around any of the pieces; trees, buildings, whatever), and a page of pirate ships and treasure.

Here's my stuff for this chapter.  The Pirates game works well for practicing directions.

Vocab Powerpoint
Just PPT Flashcards. Features articles with the word and pron guides.

A note about the vocabulary in this unit:
One of the frequent criticisms of the textbooks is that voacbulary and grammar points are rarely revisted and revised in later units. Whilst this is still largely the case, there is now some revision between grades. Which is a bit annoying when you realise new textbooks get dropped on us in pairs instead of a staggered rollout by year. This particular unit assumes familiarity with the vocab from Unit 4 in the Grade 5 text, and as such I've added the revision vocabulary to the PPT:
the doughnut shop, the bank, the hospital, the theater

Also another directions lesson: simple bingo but with a twist: http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2014/07/bingo-with-twist-grade-6-its-next-to.html

This is another directions idea , card match up and speaking : http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2014/06/easy-directions-activity-get-them-up.html

Earlier in the thread, someone posted what I thought was a great powerpoint, thanks! But I wanted to make a memory game, and thought the rest of the powerpoint was a good review so I left it with it.

The memory game just has a few maps. Show students for 10-15 seconds then take away and ask questions about the location of things on the map. Simple but good way for students to draw from their vocabulary.

New Mario Game
My students absolutely love Mario games, so I made a new one last night.  It's specifically for lessons on giving directions.  The first several slides are from our usual routine.  I don't know if the game will still work correctly if they are deleted, but you can definitely change the content of the slides (review key words/phrases or whatever you'd like).

To play this game, I divide the class into three groups: A, B, and C.  The first student to volunteer represents his/her group; we continue until a pattern (A-C-B or B-C-A or whatever) is set, then we follow the pattern until the end of the class.  For each round, I choose a student who hasn't yet played.  Once the groups began to understand this system, they started encouraging the quieter students to play.  I encourage teams to help students who are struggling so they don't feel too stressed.

When a student volunteers, I'll ask, "Where do you want to go?"  He or she will say "hospital," for example.  Then the whole class should ask, "Where is the hospital?"  The volunteering student should provide directions to get Mario from his location on the map to the hospital (sorry, I haven't animated that yet).  Click on the building (not the word) to see the result.  The buildings should disappear while the words remain; therefore, it's possible to ask students to continue making sentences (e.g., "It's between the market and the school.") without repeating selections.

My students loved the random question option (choose one of three boxes) on the previous Mario game, so I made plenty of those kinds of choices.  For the warp room, click one pipe (I'm asking students to say, "left," "middle," or "right.").  Mario will fall into the pipe, and then a question box will rise.  Click the question box to continue.  For vines, click the vine first, and Mario will "climb" up it.  Click Mario to continue.  It's not perfect, but it's the best I could do in approximately seven hours from scratch.

I changed the point system a little, too, since my classes tended to have one group win by a long shot.  We're playing for the first time today, so I'm not sure how it will work out yet.

Let me know how it goes if you try it!  Thanks for looking

I made this popup board game but didn't get to use it.  I had planned on using it as a reading game as pair work.
Students choose a card randomly and then read what's behind the building. To add a little fun there are points awarded to each building, some are + others are -. Student with the most points win.

It can also be used as a writing game. Chose a card, write the sentence, then check your answer and points.

Please printout the first two slides, glue them together (the sentences should be glued upside down). I suggest you laminate them for more sturdiness. Laminating and cutting takes a lot of time, sorry for posting this late! >_<  As I didn't get to use it I didn't bother to triple check everything. Editing might be required.

This game is great. I played it with my grade 6s. I have a different Cheonjae book, so directions are lesson 6 for me. The points difference can be pretty drastic. I had a class who kept on getting mostly the negative point screens.

Here's a PPT for the Story and Great Art period.

It talks about Van Gogh's Bedroom in Arles series, his sunflower series, and then at the end I adjusted the book's dialogue just a little so that they can do an activity where they draw their friend's room.

Here is a worksheet: It shows a map with different locations.  Underneath there are sentences.
e.g. "The dentist office is between the apartments and the supermarket."

The sentences are WRONG. the students must read the sentence, look at the map, and correct the sentence.

Bonus question where they need to direct you to the ice cream shop....yum.

So my coT had this awesome revamp of the doreamon ppt....it's fantastic practice and the kids were interested the whole time...it includes extra slides for the new prepositions.

I also included a star wars worksheet I made. It's pretty writing intensive...there's a maze they have to figure out and then they would write the directions for the maze. best done as a group activity I think...but I love group work... ^^

If you've tried using the fancy-pants info gap maps in the book, you'll know that they're useless. There are only three gaps on the page, and the arrangement of the questions are such that you'll get two answers after asking the first question, leaving the third as a process of elimination.

My co-teacher really liked the idea of an info gap though, so I sketched up a slightly more functional one. We're up to five questions (running out of vocab here...) and there are a few red herring buildings.

Half of my classes need a filler lesson due to the long weekend and sports day. So here's a Mario Quiz. There are 20 simple questions, plus an extra 6 high reward challenge ones hidden away for the students to discover.

Quick review before starting the lesson. You can use this for any of the parts.

They have to look at the PPT and quickly find Song Joongki. (He's all the rage these days, y'know  )

Listening:  Numbers Game
Students form groups of at least 4, although if you have a larger class then the groups can have more (I think 8 would be the max per group though).  Each student in the group is assigned a number.  The students then have to do what the teacher says.  For instance, the teacher could say, "Number 1 is in front of Number 4."  The students in each group with those numbers run to the front of class and act it out.  The first team to act it out correctly gets a point.  Each time change the numbers and actions (behind/between/next to/etc).
I've attached a short PPT with some practice slides and a model of the game.  This game works really well however our students needed 2 lessons to really understand it.  Even though the game is super easy, the students had trouble with the prepositions of place.  I also made necklaces (yarn, construction paper, tape) and wrote a number on each so there was a visual for what number each person was.

Speaking:  Complete the map game
There are two different maps, each with 5 buildings missing.  The students walk around the class and play RPS.  The winner gets to ask, "Where is the ______?"  The loser replies using the TL:  It's behind/in front of/between/next to/etc.  If they don't have that building on their map (if both students have Map A, for example), then the loser says, "I don't know."
Since there is Map A and Map B, you could do this as a partner activity or as a mill activity.  For our class, the first 4 students to complete their map got a point (reward).   The PPT with the buildings (for review) and the maps is attached.  Print slides 6 and 7 for the activity.
