Lesson 1: How Do You Use Your Time?

This is a quick fun little thing for the Listen and Speak Part 1 of the Gr3 book.  Being that there is no link for it, I am posting it here, and if a link shows up later, I will be happy to move it.  It's easy stuff, Connect four, just doing the question part of "What are your plans for" and "What are you planning to do for".

Since the link hasn't been updated yet, here's a second part for Lesson 1, Listen and Speak Pt II.  It's a simple search and destroy bomb format with a quick run through to make sure they know how to play, then review of LnS I, and then into the expressions for LnS II.

Simple stuff.  Hope you can use it.

Here's my lesson for Grade 3, Unit 1, Lesson 1. I'm at an all boys middle school, and they are lower level, so it's pretty simple. For the "fill in the blank" slides, you can hand out a worksheet for more advanced classes. There's a telephone game at the end that my students like to play. Hope it helps someone!  ;D

Here's the worksheet I made to go with the PPT.


Here's my lesson for Grade 3 Unit 1, Listen and Speak 1.

Self explanatory I think. There's a progression from introducing the topic (talking about plans) to eliciting what tense we use to talk about plans. From here we start with simple future tense, progress into "be going to ~" and then into today's key expressions. I thought this progression would be the easiest way to introduce the language.
Plenty of room to elicit from students, and to practice the key expressions.
On page one of the worksheet the students will make two simple conversations like the example.
Before completing page 2, brainstorm dream vacations as a class.
Go over the questions -where, when, who etc and elicit answers from the students. Once you have brainstormed, go back over the questions and elicit the sentence form from the students (Eg. Where -> Where are you planning to go for your vacation? How long -> How long are you planning on going?). Write the questions on the board and have students make answers for them.
Then pair the students off and have them ask each other about their vacations. If there is time, have volunteers share their partners travel plans, and award points / candy.

Here is a lesson for Listen and Speak 1 from Unit 1 of Grade 3 book. There is mp3 attached because I have embedded them into the PPT. Place them in the same folder as the PPT and they should work well.

This was slightly adapted from Shirmane's PPT. We were sharing ideas over email. Hope this is helpful.

I had to start Unit 1 Listen and Speak 2 for Grade 3 already. Again the following is a lesson that I have adapted from other PPT I have found on waygook, but I added in the book parts. I have a small game of them figuring out the problem from the advice. After the second one I tell them "You should look at page 13." The Problem and Advice are meant to be matched in the book so I turn it into game like, but many forget I am still covering the book.
Keep the mp3 in the same folder as the first PPT to help files play correctly.

The attached game is taken from somewhere else on waygook. Adjustments were made due to certain things were not polite. I take one day to cover the first PPT and then go over the slides in the game if there is time. Normally I have 10 minutes extra. So this week we are going to play the game completely as a game this time.

Part 1

Complete the worksheet blanks by using the provided code.
Concept checking PPT game - play as a speed game with Uno cards for points (team).
Play Bingo with interative board.
Students complete the dialogue on their worksheet using the provided options.
Teacher rolls the dice and students read the completed dialogue.
First student to have their dialogue completed wins.

-Another user uploaded a card activity (I edited it a bit, but this is defnitely not my own idea completely)
-In groups from card activity, write own dialogue (fill in the blanks)

This is for Listen and Speak 2. 

I struggled making this lesson since there's never really much posted for 3rd grade.  I don't know why that is, since grades 1 and 2 have tons of lessons up for this book.  So I figured I would try and give back so this is the first lesson I've ever posted.  It is mostly just parts of the above lessons smushed together.

Start with the ppt to elicit the key phrases.
Partner activity is the worksheet.  I mostly call it a partner activity so I only have to print half the worksheets and save paper.  But also there's a little conversation they write at the end.  Then I call numbers to go over the first two sections, and when we go over section three they have to stand up with their partner and tell the class their conversation together.
Then play connect four.  At least at my school the kids get insanely into connect four and they can take up the rest of the hour outmaneuvering each other.  Also it gets the entire class to participate if you go down the rows getting them to all choose a move.

Here is my lesson plan for chapter one. For my class, I just take the key expressions from the textbook and create additional material for the kids. Most of everything I have recycled from other peoples posts, and the game is not my own.

Listen and Speak 2. 

I wanted to give back and share this game which was so successful with all my students.
First, we reviewed giving advice, this was a lesson they did in 2nd Grade so I didn't have to go into as much detail, you may have to expand on this for your students.

There's a short Survival Game where they give advice on how to survive certain emergency situations. My students really enjoy this type of thing and I learnt a lot too, in the process.

The  card game is basically an "Apples to Apples" game where one person will read a problem and the others give advice. The person with the problem will then choose the best advice and give them the problem card as a point. The advice given varied from good to ridiculous and the students really enjoyed the autonomy of rewarding the points. (*Making the cards is labour intensive in that the problem cards will need to have a different backing to the advice cards)
