That 'bow' should go side to side.  it should fit into your cheeks (not all the way, just around the inside of your lips).  From the picture it looks like the bow is parallel to the air pipe and you should be able to bend it so that it points to the back of your head.  Don't worry too much if it's not completely straight to the back, the important thing is that it's not pointing straight to your forehead.
