Paperman- Animated Short Lesson with PPT & Worksheet
« on: September 07, 2015, 09:13:17 PM »
Hey All,

So I wanted to post this lesson based around the excellent short film Paperman. I know this has been posted on this site before, but when I found it was kind of buried. I found the site film-english.com which has a lot of great materials. Using their lesson plan and a PPT I found on here, I combined the two which should hopefully make for a good lesson. I haven't written out a lesson plan, but if you follow the PPT it should be pretty self-explanatory. There's a paper airplane flying activity at the end which the person who originally made the PPT had done, but I'm not sure if I'm going to use that, but I left it in in case anyone does want to use the activity. Hope this is helpful!

Just to add I just did this lesson and it seemed to be a real hit! I definitely didn't have time for everything, so I think that this lesson could be used for 2 class periods and not just one. I ended up using this for my first years, and I think that the worksheet was maybe a little too difficult. I might make the worksheet questions a bit easier. Also, I think the students were a little confused on the worksheet as far as what was supposed to be Korean and what was supposed to be English. If I get a chance I may upload a new worksheet with the vocabulary words in Korean and then they will have to translate it into English. That way the entire worksheet is in English and that should eliminate the confusion.

Here's a slightly revised worksheet that fits 2 sets of questions on 1 sheet if you want to save paper. I also made the language level a bit easier.

This looks great! I think it's definitely enough for two lessons. I will probably edit it down to just fill one 45-minute lesson for my after school class. Thank you!  :azn:

Awesome! I've been meaning to do this for this short along with a few other animated shorts. And you've saved me the time. :)

I am doing this lesson this week for my 1st year students, and it's once again been a real hit. I ended up typing up a lesson plan and revising the PPT and worksheet a bit. I'm posting that here.

Also, my co-teacher had an excellent suggestion that I wanted to pass on. As part of this lesson I have the students write an English story before they watch the film. However, I often have trouble getting volunteers, and some of the students' English is minimal. I sometimes use Wheeldecide.com to pick students randomly to read their stories, but then I end up with the unfortunate situation of students who can't/didn't write a story.

I now have them write the story with a partner. This reduces their anxiety and better stories are produced as a result.

I used this lesson with my lowest level Grade 3 classes. I thought I was going to have to pull teeth to get any participation. I was wrong. The students loved it!  I taught the vocab before playing the movie. They liked being able to say the vocab words during the movie as they saw them and were able to make educated guesses about what would happen after the pause in the film. I didn't have enough time to do the dialog portion. But that's mostly due to the fact that my students never come to class on time, and I like to chat with them for about 5 minutes before I start the lesson.

I included a tweaked version of my PPT. I also clipped the movie into 2 parts so I wouldn't have to worry about forgetting to stop it. The worksheet has been changed to match the order the vocab appears in the PPT.
