Open lesson. They want me to read a book. I don't have one.
« on: November 02, 2015, 07:59:13 pm »
Hey all! Long time no post. Things have gotten tremendously better since the last time I posted. It was a bit bumpy getting into the groove of things and figuring out what, exactly, the schools want of me.

So it turns out all of them - Schools 1, 2, and 3 - all want me to teach from the textbook and nothing else. Which sucks, but it's their classroom, not mine, and I do not have time to prepare 4 lesson plans for one school, 6 for the other, 11 for the last one. So I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place in that aspect. I do what I can in my afterschool classes in my last school to keep things interesting.

But I digress.

I have an open lesson in my 3 - 4 grade students. I know I want to do a lesson on parts of the body. My main problem here is I've been searching and searching but I cannot find a children's story book to correspond to this and does not involve sex ed.

Any help in that aspect? I've been searching and searching but it just hasn't been turning up anything!

Thank you so much,

Lowfoam.

I was thinking about From Head to Toe.

That does sound like a decent book for the kids. Now here's to hoping that my school has a copy of it!

it's ridiculous how many books inject sex ed into it. I'm like. . . can't I just have a book on the outside parts?

None. All that's available are super simplified ones not suitable for the grade level, or all of them have sex ed in them. Do a google search. It's practically all I could come up with.

The only ones I found that were even remotely suitable were a Cat in the Hat book, the Eric Carle book, and a book for tots that was called Head Shoulders Knees and Toes.

Have you seen the book, "Mummy laid an egg,"? It was stocked at the hagwon I used to work for and 3 of the 4 public elementary schools that I've worked for in Korea.

I thought it was wild.

As for body parts books.

My school has a neat book called "I ain't gonna paint no more." It has a lot of body parts but probably not the usual ones that you want to teach the kids.

head, neck, chest, arm, hand, back, leg, feet,
and the one that rhymes with the word "What?"

Might seem crazy, but could you just make one? Say, find the words to "The Elephant and the Balloon" from Black Books and flesh it out. Just copy/paste the "Is it in the alligator's mouth?" sentence using different bodyparts, prepositions and animals. Print in large Comic Sans. Now print some relevant colourful photos or illustrations off Google. Cut. Paste it all on A3 card. Staple. Would only take an hour and cost you nout.

This might help? Also there are songs on Youtube for from Head to Toe. Read and sing maybe? With actions?

head, shoulders knees and toes.  easy to learn, easy to reproduce and the parents can see that the kids can be fully active.  Everyone wins.

I second "From Head to Toe". Someone else posted a PPT but I want to share one more. The pictures from the book are sharper and cleaner in this one.

I used it in a 3rd grade open class recently and it went pretty well. You can have the kids repeat the body part words, do the actions, etc.

You may have to search for an English children's book at the nearest grand book store. I know there is a Kyobo Book Store in Bundang at Seohyeon Station. Here are some more locations.

There's a Little John's Book Store located in Suwon in Yeongtong-gu. They have a great selection of books and usually give discounts when you inform them that you are a teacher. They will ask what school and you get a 10% discount.

Five Little Monkeys is fun.

Alright! Thank you so much for the input and all of the helpful links. c:

My open lesson went as well as it could. I did end up reading From Head to Toe and the kids liked it. The game I played was pantomiming what the animals did and having the other students say the target language as the answer.

My next open lesson will be much better now that I know what I'm doing. But the kids really did like the book. Thank you so much, everyone, for your help!

LOL "We was robbed!!" .... they would all just draw boobs and things...

I love that "I ain't gonna paint no more" book just because I was an art teacher back home...
