Word searches and bingo
« on: April 21, 2011, 02:41:29 pm »
In some of my lower level classes the students don't know English, what I do is I give them a word search and play bingo... sometimes it takes 1 week to finish sometimes 6 weeks of the 5-10 minutes when you just can't think of anything to do, students love bingo and word search so I give them what they want. In fact the students work faster now so they can play the game.

If any of this is translated wrong blame my students  ;)

They are uploaded, but you have less than 5 posts so you cannot view attachments.

Here is a website ( http://bogglesworldesl.com/) that has a bunch of ESL worksheets, which is where I got the attached word searches. I added the Korean directly to the worksheet and I'll use these in my lower level classes the week before finals.

Bogglesworld stuff is great for really low-level students who don't and won't ever know English, or for keeping a class quite while you do individual or pairs work, but if you're planning entire lessons around it something's wrong. It may not necessarily be your fault that something's wrong, or that students who've been getting English lessons for three, five, or seven years can't write a four-word sentence or answer 'How's it gong?', but if you're using it for 45 or 50 minutes you can be sure that you're not using a very optimal approach to language learning.

I agree!
That being said, I do this once a term.  Usually, right after final exams when things are getting really chaotic.
I'll be doing a review bingo game for one week.  It's a nice break for them after final exams and even the lowest level students can have fun.

These worksheets are nice to have as a compliment to a lesson or a review class too!
