A powerpoint you can use for a game.

Shows the question and picture first without the answer. Then shows correct answer. There can be more than one answer for some ("I want to go shopping" or "I want to shop").

Good to review conjugations of " to want" (I/you/he/she/name/we/they) right before this game since it goes beyond the curriculum, and leave it on the board for lower level classes.

The jeopardy game is very fun, my kids all enjoyed it very much when played in teams. Just make sure you have some way to make sure only one person per team is answering. I made little shapes on a stick for each team (9) to raise when they knew the answer. Only the person with the shape is allowed to say anything. I've never used the black dog ppt but it was available from another site like this for this lesson.

UPDATE: Added another video and a PPT geared for the video. Understand all these activities don't have to fit in one period, but can be divided up however you want.

Here's a video for a song where the vocabulary somewhat relates to this material.

Also, here's a video I found referenced from EFL Classroom, and I decided to play the first 2.5 minutes only of it focusing on Joe, Marsha, Diane, and Robin. Attached is a powerpoint to prepare them what to listen to before actually listening to it because this English is for a natural environment instead of a textbook environment. The powerpoint has a quick matching activity for everyone to see.

My plan is to emphasize a difference in "What do you want to do?" usually referring to today, and "What do you like to do?" referring to free time. The curriculum's choice is vague, so I think it's good to highlight these differences.

I also included a lyrics sheet for students to follow along, and to look at the music video for homework to contribute in a future lesson.

For a game, I will play a "Rock Scissors Paper" game. Here's how it's played:
A. Place the flash cards on the board in a line horizontally in 9 Spaces. The class will be divided into groups A and B.
B. One student from each group will come up and ask, What do you want to do? The group needs to respond according to the answer, and if the group responds correctly and loudly, they can move to the next space.
C. Once the group meets in the middle, they do RSP. The loser starts over.
D. Keep repeating step B and C. If the teams reaches the end, they are the winners!

Thanks for all the lesson ideas, in this chapter and all the others that I've stolen materials for! Here are a couple of worksheets for chapter 11 lesson 1&2 (I do double lessons at my schools.) One for the dialogue and one for a game where students have to mark their "wants" on a sheet then find other students with the same ones by asking "What do you want to do?" "I want to ..."

Here is a Blockbuster game (MAJOR props to RufusW for providing the amazing template!). I didn't make a round 2... just round 1.

(To play... red team and blue team. When the block turns 1/2 red and 1/2 blue, click on the colour of the winning team to change the entire block that colour).

It's for
-I want to...
-They want to...
-He wants to..
-She wants to..
-It wants to...
-(Name) wants to...

I also attached a simple worksheet for visual learners. I'm going to have them colour the correct word (want/wants) for I, they, he, she, it and Minsu. Seeing it laid out like that will hopefully make it clear for them.

Haven't used it yet, let me know if there's any problems ^^

this game was a real life saver. My coteacher sprung on me the lesson this morning, and the activity for today requires too many materials.

Once i figured out that you click the color of the half that answered correctly it was smooth sailing. I added a survey i found on here and a code breaker activity to eat up extra time.

Just a basic hidden pictures game. On a group's turn, they say which panel they want to remove to see part of the picture and have a stab at saying "I want to..." It includes singing, dancing, playing the guitar, playing the violin, playing the piano, swimming, hiking, skiing, playing baseball, and playing computer games. That's ten slides, which is enough to fill about 15 minutes or more, depending on which tiles they remove first and how fast they are thinking of what to say. I only got through all the slides in one period, out of eight.

I am looking for some ideas for songs to use for this lesson. My co-teacher and I pretty much have to come up with a song every single lesson because the "Let's Sing" portion of the textbook is so frightfully lame that sixth graders will lose respect for us entirely if we try to play it for them. Plus the songs annoy the living crap out of me too, so it's just as well.

The expressions for this lesson are centred around "I want to ____" / "I don't want to _____" , "Do you want to_____?, etc.

Some of the ideas I have come up with seem a bit borderline. I have found some songs with the right sentence structure, but the content is just a bit innappropriate for sixth graders, even if they can't really understand it (my school is fairly low-level).

I thought of using "I don't wanna grow up" by the Ramones (lots of great sentences) but nihilistic punk seems like more the thing for high schoolers. I also thought "Windowsill" by The Arcade Fire had some good sentences, but again, a little bit serious and heavy for sixth graders.

That leaves me with "I don't want to" by Toni Braxton, which is a bit sappy, and "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" by Burt Bacharach and Hal David (The White Stripes' version) which doesn't have a lot of key phrases in it.

Franz Ferdinand has a song with "Do you want to?" as the chorus. Its a bit fast though, so you'd likely have to run it through Audacity once to even consider it (tip: for every percent you slow the speed, raise the pitch by one too). I think there's subtle sexual references in it, but too subtle for anyone non-native to notice (and no worse than any other pop on the radio).

Can't say that I've taught it myself, but I had it on a shortlist of songs to teach last year.

I've been thinking of using "I Wanna Be Like You" from The Jungle Book. Here's the one cut straight from the movie:

And several artists (including the Jonas Brothers, apparently) have also covered it, if your kids are too cool for this kind of thing. I haven't found anything that's perfect, so I'll probably pitch the Disney one when I meet with my co-teacher.

I too have had difficulty in finding a song to use for this lesson. The best one seems to be Aerosmith's "I don't want to miss a thing," which is too complicated and focuses on the "I don't wanna," part instead of "I want to." To introduce the lesson I am actually going to use a clip from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You may recognize this:

It's kind of fast and is mostly "I want _____" instead of "I want to____." But there are a few of the "I want to ______" phrases, so I was thinking of playing it and then emphasizing the difference between the two.

I hope the kids like it!
