An interesting list that measures quality of life through various yardsticks in countries around the world.

How is China's quality of life ranking, at no. 17 higher than South Korea at no. 20? Just curious. I would not have guessed that.

I don't know, but I'll have a better idea in a few months. I'll have 6 years of experience living and working in Korea, I don't think it'll take me that long to figure out if China should be higher or lower on the list.

Me neither.

How quality of life is defined:

"a good job market, affordable, economically stable, family friendly, income equality, politically stable, safe, well-developed public education system, well-developed public health system"
http://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/articles/methodology

So China is better in those aspects?

I'll still be around but probably more on the China page.

A glance at the full list of countries included would suggest that Hong Kong and Taiwan might be bundled in with China.

They only list 60 countries, so it can hardly be considered complete.

It's complete enough to get a solid idea of what's going on with respect to living life and the quality thereof.

I was directing that to Paul, who noted that HK and TW were not included, or perhaps were included as parts of China.

Whenever you are making international comparisions it's essential to look at methodology. Here is theirs: http://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/articles/methodology

"Quality of Life (16.89 percent): a good job market, affordable, economically stable, family friendly, income equality, politically stable, safe, well-developed public education system, well-developed public health system". So it excludes stuff like economic power, personal freedoms, and cultural influence.

China ranks roughly equal to South Korea on quality of life. China has a significantly better job market and  lower cost of living. South Korea has slightly better education and health services.  They're roughly equal on all the other measures mentioned in the methodology.

It's important to note that Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau are included in China's statistics. Remove them and China's numbers would drop substantially. The same is true for pretty much all economic indicators of China, unless they expressly say otherwise.

Actually, I think given China's sheer size, the additions of Hong Kong and Taiwan would have a fairly negligible effect on the statistical data. Not sure on that one, but when you have like 1.4 billion people, Taiwan and Hong Kong would be a drop in the bucket.

Under "Adventure," South Korea scored a 0 for "sexy." Can't argue with that, perennial garlic breath and smelly bathrooms are kind of a turn-off for me.

Go to China.  Korean bathrooms are a first world joy in comparison.

Wouldn't that simply depend on their sample size and data collection. Did they post that anywhere? (Sorry haven't actually taken a gander yet.)

I think that this ranking all in all is fairly accurate given that the criteria they mostly use gives more weight to economics/financial strengths rather than social/political weaknesses. In regards to the China vs Korea debate I would imagine as the Korean economy continues to cool(decline) and the Chinese economy continues to grow and diversify these rankings will change even more so over the next couple of years. One is headed in one direction(up) while the other is headed in the opposite direction.

Only other thing I was surprised about was the Malayasia and Singapore rankings a little on the low end. Japan's ranking was more or so correct IMO. Thailand's ranking was too high.
