Fingerprints/Criminal Record Check (Canadian Teachers)
« on: November 16, 2009, 02:11:15 pm »
hey to fellow Canadians!!! I have a friend who is coming in february, she got her criminal check in Vancouver but the refuse to give her the original, saying they only ever give out copies, but EPIK won't except a copy. Did anyone else get their criminal reference check in Vancouver and know how to get around this?? THANK YOU

Hi, We had to get our criminal checks notarized by a lawyer/ notary  as we only receive copies in K-w Ontario. Will EPIK accept it with notary papers? Good luck!

They also accepted my notarized copy(they actually wanted that one as I did have the original) but I had to get the Consulate of Korea to put official stamps on the notarized copy in addition.

It was a lot of running around for one piece of paper

Fingerprints/Criminal Record Check (Canadian Teachers)

Hi, everyone.

I have a question about the criminal record check from RCMP.
I was wondering, when can I receive my criminal record check from RCMP.
I sent mine on November and still waiting (almost 3 months).
Anyone got there papers earlier?  How long did you wait for it?
Thanks.

You shouldnt have to wait that long.  I am from Vancouver, so had to get mine through the VPD and it didnt take much longer than four weeks.  I was under the impression that the RCMP had them out quicker than that.  You should contact your local branch and see what's up.

I applied my CRC (RCMP) in Korea.
So I should get the letter from RCMP less than 4 weeks?
Wow~~~
On RCMP website, they mentioned that we have to wait 120days.  Not true?
Please help me.  (should I apply CRC again?)
Thank you.

On the RCMP website, they specifically say that mailed-in applications should take about 8 weeks, but can take 120 days or more, and that you shouldn't contact them asking where it is until after those 120 days are up.

Also, a heads-up to any other Canadians out there -- even though your city/provincial police department may be in charge of administering national-level criminal record checks in your region, and even though they consult the same national database that the RCMP does, unless you specifically have a CRC from the RCMP (as in, it says RCMP on the paper), immigration will not accept it. Even if the Korean consulate back home stamps it. Maybe you'll get lucky and be able to argue it through / get someone at immigration who doesn't care, but the official policy is to reject anything that is not specifically issued by the RCMP.

I had to send mine through the Ottawa branch to get the national check and it took three months or so to get it back.

Does anyone know why a 3 day process in Canada takes 3 months abroad? At this point I'm ready to send my ID home and pay my sister to fill in the paperwork for me. GAH!!!!

@eggplant

I was actually quite confused about this when doing my application in summer 2010. My recruiter also said it should be RCMP but when I went to the police department they refused to do it for me saying that the CRC's were now provided by the local (Ottawa) police department. I told them my concerns about how RCMP was specifically required and they assured me to "trust them", they have been doing this for a while with no problems at all. I was nervous but I went got the local CRC (with the check from the national database of course) and everything was fine, no problems at all.

I'm not sure if local CRC's are acceptable everywhere or if only some regions of Canada are exempt from getting the RCMP check, but obviously Ottawa police checks are sufficient. I was told that there was too much demand on the RCMP for the CRC's and that's why they were delegating the responsibility to the local agencies (at least in Ottawa). It was nice though because they completed my check while I waited which was about a 10 minute process.

It would be nice if recruiters and other immigration information sources would be more consistant and accurate about what is required.

@Hornet

Yeah, that's the thing -- in certain areas, only the local police will perform the check. However, Korean immigration doesn't seem to understand this (or be willing to believe that it could be so). I have specifically been told by multiple people at immigration that as of January 1, 2011, they simply don't care whether or not you have something that explicitly states that it's a national-level check unless it comes directly from the RCMP. They have refused a national-level check that was obtained from the Winnipeg police department and stamped by the consulate back in Canada.

Is the 3-4 month wait mostly for those found with a criminal background, or for everyone submitting? I'm confused by a post on the RCMP site regarding this reasoning for the wait, claiming those with criminal backgrounds apparently wait longer. I could have misread or misunderstood something.

Thanks!

According to their website, it's only supposed to be for those with a criminal record (fingerprints brought up a match), OR for anyone whose application had to be processed manually (presumably, not all of the fingerprints were clear enough for the computer to pick them up). However, I imagine they've been experiencing a heavier-than-normal load as a result of these new regulations, so their processing times are probably longer than usual.

Don't want to freak you out, but I sent mine in late October and I'm still waiting! I think I'm gonna have to forfeit my next job because of it. (And no, I definitely don't have a criminal record)

Where do I look for the form to apply to the RCMP? Where do I get my fingerprints done in Korea?

you can download the form online and print it off. you can get fingerprints done at any police station, just like at home.

Hey Guys;

   Sorry just stumbled onto this thread.  So as of Jan 1, 2024 Canadians now also have to get a nationwide police check from the RCMP?  Which contract requires this?  I'm with EPIK and when I came here in August my criminal check through the OPP was fine.  I am probably going to renew my contract (which would be for Sept, so 6 months away) but would like to know since this can take around 3 months to be done.

Thanks!
