Thanks for these.  I have shared some material too.  Does anyone have a monopoly power point?  I may get around to making one someday myself.  But am things of using or creating one to explain phrases and vocabulary related to life.  "Pay your bills."  "Payday."  "Rent"  "Fine"  Then have the kids play the boardgame while I walk around and make them speak to each other in English.

Monopoly in the classroom...interesting.  I think you would have to do that in groups with something on paper though...I'm not really visualizing a ppt for that one...it's Monday though and maybe I'm just too tired.

Most kids know how to play it though as the k version I think is called Blue Marble.

Please post if you make something up for that...what about "Life" to teach that vocabulary?

Hey guys,
I hope everything is going well with your classes.

My students are having their midterms right now and I'm looking to play a game with them as an after-exam treat. I'm having a little trouble finding games that can take up the whole class and that it isn't bomb-based. I don't mind bomb-based games but I need a game that can be adapted to lower levels. Any ideas?

I've had good success with Hot Seat games and What's The Word.

(These are not mine, but I found them on Waygook)

This is my version of the 'Give me 5' game. Basically the same, just with different pictures and what not. It's the result of deskwarming boredom. I also made a answer sheet that you can print to give to the groups. Thanks to sonya for the original.

Molany,

Jeopardy is always a great game...that are lots on here to choose from!  Thanks for adding one!

For those of you who don't want/can't purchase whiteboards, here are a couple of options...

1.  Use those plastic holders in binders you see everywhere and put a blank piece of paper in there... you can also put blank forms in there like the scattergories one for students to fill in.

2.  Laminate a piece of paper...I use coloured paper and put a team name on it with some stickers on it or something...you can use these over and over again!

Another game I like to play to practice vocabulary is the fly swatter game.  I haven't tried it with my large classes...only my small ones.  I scatter the vocabulary words all over the board.  Put the students into 2 teams and give the first one on each team a flyswatter.  Say the word and the first student to hit the right words earns a point for their team.  This game has never failed to please!

Sonya

You can make your own jeopardy game really easily on this website http://jeopardylabs.com/. You will need an internet connection when playing it though just to warn you!

It's really easy to use! :D

Hey Jennifer Teacher...thanks for the link...I checked out one of the posted games and found that it didn't black out or change the colour of the point link.  So you don't know which questions you've already done.  Are they all like that?

Myun...I originally put these together for a provincial demo lesson I had to give...I entitled it " Help!  My lesson is over and I still have 10 minutes left!"  So you are right on the money!  :D

Here's a useful list of various games and activities:

It's pretty extensive so takes some looking through, but there's plenty of good stuff there!

This is a demo-class I gave several years ago entitiled...Help my class is over and I still have 10 minutes left!

There are games that you can just play for 10 minutes and games that can last the whole class if you want.

Some of them I made into powerpoints but you don't need to do it as a powerpoint... for example Gimme 5 is a powerpoint but if you print out the Gimme 5 list you can just use that instead

Sonya

Both my middle and high school students love the scattergories game. The students get extremely competative when I suddenly make changes to the rules. We usually play the first two to three rounds with the regular rules. On the third round, students are not allowed to write the same words as other groups. If they do, those words are eliminated and they only receive points for unique words. This makes the game intense, even if the students are competing for a prize. Thus far, this game has encouraged them to learn more country and city names for each letter of the alphabet.

Hi there,

Just wanted to throw a quick game idea out there that another teacher taught me. This game is called "Don't Hit the Teacher." You'll need a ball with suction cups that sticks to the whiteboard. Here's how it works...

Stand in front of the white board and draw concentric circles around yourself. The farther away from you, the less points. Closer to you, more points. Let them know that if the ball hits you, it's minus a lot of points.

Have them line up at a long enough distance that they're throwing accuracy is going to be a little bit compromised. Have some sort of material ready to quiz them on and one by one, give them a question related to whatever you've been studying. If they get it right, they get one throw. Some students are going to want to get a lot of points. Some students are going to hit you by accident. Some of them are going to hit you on purpose. Either way it's going to be funny, and they're going to laugh a lot when you cover your face/groin with a book in anticipation of their throw. This is a great way to burn some time and get some review in as well.

I like the basic idea. Instead of standing in the line of fire though,  I'll have a student trace my outline on the board and then write the number of minus points inside the silhouette.

Just randomly stumbled across this thread while looking for activities for my high school students. The materials posted in the first post look great, as are the other ideas posted here. Would highly encourage people to try some of these out!  8)

I've added an RPS (rock paper scissors) game to the original post...very kick ass game that gets your babies talking...can easily adjust to different levels, just change the dialogue, or substitute with vocabulary or sounds or pictures.

Noise level on this game is high...you have been warned.

I usually have my co teacher do a translation with the students then we do a round of repeating and then I'll demo it with my co teacher...best scenario here is when my co teacher wins.  Rock paper scissors levels the playing field in classes with different levels of English.

There is a colourful wheel; the animation is set to exit for 1 minute and then an explosion when it's gone so you don't need a timer.

Have fun,

Sonya
