I just had an amazing student snap her class in line. I got a package from home and said to every class, the best class per grade gets something from the package. Most classes are like, that is NOT going to be us. But I have two classes 1-10 and 1-9 and they ALWAYS compete. 1-10 is smarter, but 1-9 has the better attitudes and has been winning. Today a few girls were talking and ignoring class. I sighed and tapped my forehead with my palm and my students know this means I am not happy with something. I don't do this normally, but it is a type of 'Konglish' sign for them. The trouble maker in the class stands on her chair and says this. . ..

"If I do NOT GET CHOCOLATE I WILL KILL ALL OF YOU!" Another girl said something to her in Korea and I assume it was negative. The trouble maker just stared this EVIL glance at the girl and the other girl yelled, "Uh, teacher. . .I finshy. . . .Finished! I AM DONE! I promise! Finished! AHHHH!" It was like the trouble maker had force-powers. She then got off her chair and sat down and she transformed into this smiling girl.

It's a combination of conditioning the kids and psychological manipulation. Discipline is not a matter of shouting and punishment, but of getting kids to do what you want without them even realising they're doing it.

In the case of our PE teacher I think not wanting to get shouted at or punished has something to do with it.

Can anyone share their methods on how to control their students?

I've heard of the following:
- Setting up a stamp card/point system and reward students with prizes every month or at the end of the year
- Have student leaders
- Keeping their cell phones for a week if they play with it (some teachers claim they keep those cell phones forever?!?!? Can they do that? Since I hear Korean parents complain about every little thing...)

For my afternoon classes (that I teach by myself) I write GAMES on one of the boards and then start erasing letters for infractions (talking, not paying attention etc.); if I end up erasing the entire word then the students don't get to play a game in the last 5 minutes of class. I've been doing it for a couple of weeks now and *knock on wood* it has worked pretty well and I haven't actually had to take a game away yet.

That's not a bad idea, thanks =] But what about high school kids? Are they "too cool" for games and prizes and whatnot?

I kind of think the best way to make kids not continue being disruptive is to embarrass them. Anyone ever try making them sit and stare at the corner of the room and make them come up and sing in English?

Yeah, I teach elementary so I'm not really sure how the older kids feel about losing games etc. I do know though, that embarrassment doesn't work so well with the younger kids... I was teaching my grade 1s the alphabet song and after one boy continued to screw around I asked if he wanted to come to the front and sing. Imagine my surprise when instead of being mortified he became super excited and wanted to sing not once but twice! I then had 12 other kids clamoring for their chance to sing in front of the whole class. >.<

Yeah, I suspect the opposite with older kids: Don't care about games but embarrasses easily.

I don't know if you guys are with GEPIK, but I recently came back from a GEPIK middle/high school orientation, the coordinators stated that there are some new governement guidelines in place that says teachers are not to embarrass the students in any way including making them stand at the front or the back of the class. Wow....we can't hit them or make them get out of their seats, what can we do now? well, they didnt say anything about throwing things...lol......(don't worry that last sentence was all in fun, I would NEVER hurt the kids in any way). For the record, candy and any prize involving food or money ALWAYS wins over older students.

Older kids love games and candy, too. However, (a) do NOT use it to bribe them as this will not work in the long term and (b) when giving prizes, only do it if it's a random thing where anyone can win, or if it's to a group that includes low-level students. If only the good students win then the weak ones will think there's no point in trying and the good ones will think that learning in and of itself is not the reward they're seeking.

Oh who cares what they say? Just tell them 'yes sir, yes sir, three bags (of BS) full' and carry on with whatever works. Considering that 90%+ are embarrassed to speak English in class we may as well just pack up and leave if that's the case.
