Open classes only when the KT is leading the lesson.
« on: June 16, 2016, 11:13:24 AM »
We take turns leading lessons. However, all the open classes are when my KT is leading the lessons (where I simply just serve as the pronunciation expert and get them to repeat words and sentences after me - all I'm asked to do).

Parents won't be watching, but the principle will be. Not renewing my contract or teaching via EPIK again so I don't think I should worry too much. Thoughts?

P.S. I bet you had an aneurysm when you read principle instead of principal.

They probably just want more control over the lesson while being watched? Essentially isn't our role to be the "assistant" teachers to them anyway?

Just don't want the principal to get the wrong idea, when I lead the classes, everything is muuuuuch better and the KT does veeeery little.

It's probably their review not yours.

Regular class open classes are very unnatural.  Even if you spend the whole year teaching the students alone you will be jettisoned for that class as you are the 'assistant'.  You can't be seen to be leading the class because that 'ain't your job'.  'Stand, smile and repeat after me'.  My 'special' co-teacher who I loathed more than anything, who normally never played games in English class, decided that she would play a game in the open class.  So unnatural because she never ever played them.  Middle school and high school classes let you take the lead and it doesn't matter because by that age the students have 'sufficient' English to follow your speaking.

During open classes, if it is bad, it is the KT's problem, not yours.  No matter how bad it is, you will come out smelling like a rose.  The KT on the other hand will be made to feel so bad they are almost in tears.

Is it your open class, or your co-teacher's?  If it's theirs, then whatever, let them lead.  If it's yours, you should probably be the one leading that class, and rearrange the schedule a bit accordingly.

If you're not renewing then it probably doesn't really matter, but you never know when you'll need a reference letter or who will be available to write it, so I'd put my best foot forward.
