Pop Culture Lesson for Middle School
« on: July 14, 2016, 12:25:25 pm »
This is a light lesson for middle schoolers, perfect for after exams or as a filler.

The ppt covers the definition of Pop culture, some current celebrities, popular slang and memes.

The last part of the ppt is a Pop Culture Challenge. It is adapted from another ppt I found on here that uses Ranker.com to show what is popular in the U.S.

For each question students have 4 options. They each write their choice for most popular and then the scores are revealed. Students tally their own points. Whoever has the most at the end wins a prize. I'm sure this would work really well in groups of 4 with a white board, too. I stress that they shouldn't answer with what they like best, but instead what they think is most popular in the U.S.

The ppt and game last for about 25 minutes. I found 3 current pop song videos to play in and around the lesson (T Swift, Shakira, Beiber-Gomez mashup).

*Disclaimer: ranker.com isn't scientific. I'm not claiming the stuff I've pulled from there represents all of America. Anyone can vote on the website, I just say it's an American perspective because it's an American website. This is just for fun

I didn't make the attached collage - just included it to show how the ppt is styled.

Hi,

This is a fun lesson.

What do the numbers mean...10, 3, 5, 1?

Thanks!
What are you doing still on waygook?

Also, the numbers are taken from a greater list. Like, the top ten popular ice creams, or whatever, and then just the four that she chose made it on to the list. They just didn't change the numbers to 1-4.

The numbers are the score the students write down. 10 means it is the most popular, 5 less so, 3 even less, and 1 means least popular.
