Making a Jack o Lantern
« Reply #41 on: October 15, 2011, 12:04:42 am »
I used a Halloween craft book in my class last week that showed how to make a jack o lantern. I was amazed by how interested the kids seemed to be. Most kids here in Japan have seen pictures or toys of jack o lanterns but never how they are made. SO,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I put together this simple video, if you can use it, please do :)

This really looks like a great activity but where can you buy orange pumpkins in Korea ideal for carving???

What a great video!! I will definitely use it with my class for Halloween. Below I've added a make your own Jack-o-Lantern worksheet you can use with the video. I think it solves the problem of having to buy real pumpkins for your class! :)

Where did you ship your pumpkins from? Are they expensive to get to korea in large quantities?

This is great, thanks so much. I might not have the funds to order pumpkins (I can only imagine how much money it costs to ship one anywhere :)) but I'm thinking of using orange balloons and letting the students draw on their own jack-o-lantern face.

In Japan there is a company called "The Foreign Buyers Club" They sell pumpkins but they are a bit pricey. Balloons, paper are all good Ideas. You could also use green, yellow or even better, orange peppers :). My students so far have really enjoyed the video.

you can buy pumpkins at any big outdoor markets in Korea. They range from around 5,000 to 15,000 won.

I am so determined to carve a pumpkin..or at least make some sort of substitute for my kids this year considering I only have 5-10 students in each class. It seems manageable.  Thanks for the link!!!

This song is cute!
I use a hello song with my kids:
Hello, Hello, Hello How are you?
I'm Good (thumbs up) I'M GOOD! (louder!)
I'm Great (hands up)  I'M GREAT!
I'm wonderful! (Hands cupped under chin!)
THey love it! Add your own tune :)

Also there is this song:
Hello, hello, hello,
hello, how are you?
I like to be with you,
and you and you and you!
La la la la la la la la la la la la
bipidibopidi doo!

The tune is to "here we go round the mulberry bush"

They look useful, I don't currently teach.  Can you tell me how you use these, do you just show the video, what would you do after the video?
