Using movies to improve listening skills
« on: September 15, 2011, 11:03:36 am »
Hi,

I teach grade 1 and grade 2 high school, and 15 minutes of most classes are supposed to be for 'listening'. I've usually just used dialogues relevant to the topic and vocab that we're covering in the class, but seen as the kids are always asking for 'moobie moobie', I'm making an effort to introduce some active movie clip-watching, which can also improve their listening skills.

It's really hard to pick out scenes where the actors have a balanced dialogue without too much background noise, and where the English used isn't too complicated. I was in a rush last night for today's class and threw together three random scenes from:

1. "The 40 Year Old Virgin" (from 1:23 - 2:49) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fa1IN1GN4Q4
2. "Away We Go" (all) http://youtu.be/nQwcXgB-DCI
3. "The Dark Knight". (from the start until 1:03) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohU16OiduUs

The thing is - when I did them in class today the students were utterly focused for the 15 minutes, and really made an effort to understand the scripts. It's something I definitely want to do more of in the future. I spent 5 minutes after the listening correcting and explaining situations / vocab / phrasal verbs etc. I felt a bit awkward about the '40 year old virgin' clip, might cut that out..!

Just wondering - does anyone else have material similar to this? I know there are loads of scripts at http://englishacademy.voila.net/films.htm, but it's hard to choose an appropriate scene. It'd be good to get a couple of worksheets together...

Brian, this looks great! I'm eager to see the worksheet, although it wouldn't be too hard to cook one up myself.

You've found some really great clips too, for sure. I'll probably use this next week with my High School grade 2 students as part of a lesson on movies.

The only thing I don't have working at the moment is the "which movie was this" portion because clearly the youtube link gives the answer.

I figure I'll keep it in to see if they were paying attention.

Good luck everyone.
