Talent Show lesson
« on: November 21, 2011, 11:13:33 am »
This is a lesson I made regarding talent shows for low level high school.  I try to make my lessons as visual as possible and use things I think will interest them as my students have very short attention spans and are not very motivated.

I went through the PPT with them, asking questions and trying to elicit vocab from them.  (They all said 'audition program' when I asked what they thought the topic would be).  For the 'good, bad, so-so' vocab I had them listen and repeat then we did the slides with the missing words as a class as well.

I split them into 6 groups by giving out each student a strip of paper with a judge's name on it. They had to sit with the other students who had the same name. They liked seeing what the judges looked like, and laughed at the group who had Louis Walsh. This got them interested to start.

I then showed them audition clips from the UK X Factor.

Each group had score cards from 1 to 5.  They watched each clip and then I asked them to hold up their scores. I would choose a group to explain why they gave a score by saying the judges name for that group - 'Simon Cowell group, why did you give her 1 out of 5?'  I would ask a couple of groups for each clip. I wrote down an average score for each performer on the board, based on what they gave me.

If I had time at the end (which I usually didn't) I would ask them if they agreed on who the 'best' performer was (whichever one had the highest average score) and just tried to get them to explain in English as much as possible.  Usually we would be finished just at the last clip though.

The episode I used, I downloaded as I can't use youtube in my classrooms.  I chose one that was at the 'early' audition stages as there is a lot more variety in the performances and some were very funny.  I'm from the UK so I used our X Factor from last year (series 7, episode 1).  You could use any show though, or youtube clips if you can. I showed 9 different performers altogether.

The students enjoyed this lesson and tried to give me explanations using English which is all I wanted them to do.

Cheers.

I will download this and have a look.

I just made a Superstar K lesson which I will trial today (and then probably make a lot of changes to it).

If it works out as I hope I will post it here later.

Thanks that would be good. I actually didn't know about Superstar K until I did this and they told me about it!

It's a little rough arround the edges but it worked with my lowest level 1st grade class. I wouldn't normally try a new lesson on them so I was surprised it didn't blow up in my face.

For the genre bit I didn't play the clips unitl the end, just enough of a sample for them to get the gist.

Attached is part one (where they build their character)
Part 2 the Adventure

Then the word docs
Character sheet.
Band sheet (I wanted teams of 4, one shet per team)
Fake character sheet for groups who had less than 4.

Some more videos to go with part 1.

I think that's all of them.

Hopefully I get time to clean up the presentation a little.

I use powerpoint 2007 but have uploaded in 2003. That normally causes some background problems for me so you may need to change the transparency.

Background images attached too.

Andyroo, could you give a bit of an outline of how you use your materials? They look really interesting and engaging for the students, but I can't figure out how you put it together to run the class. I'd love to use some if not all of it, after hearing a bit more about your lesson plan. Thanks a lot!

And Brit28, I'm curious which clips you showed from the episode you mentioned? I'm watching through it now and was just wondering which ones you singled out.

I get them into groups of 4 if possible, use the fake character sheets to make up numbers.
I had to explain this to some lower level boys and I used computer games for the example. "4 player game, you are 1 player, 2 player, 3 player"..... "this is computer", "bot" "so four players".

Then start through the first power point.

Choose performing name. I gave a couple of the lower level students a nick name myself so the rest got the idea.
Then they choose genre, I go through the clips associated with each genre and play a bit of each one until they have got the idea.

Then they have to choose 4 abilities, if you have done the Zombie Survival lesson posted by someone else on Waygook it is the same idea but instead of items they are choosing abilities.
I normally read them all out and then go through the slides (18 to 33) to explain the more trickier ones (Melody and lyric writer come to mind).

Once they have all selected their 4 abilities I hand out the band sheet, one per group and they each put their name and abilities on that sheet. If there is a “bot” I usually put those details in for them to get them started.
Have tried it with 5 in some groups and it still works but that is a huge advantage.

Powerpoint 2

This is just like the Zombie game in that they get points (fans) for having the required abilities on each slide.
Example slide 1 “first impressions”, Pretty, cute and handsome  + 5 points.
So if they have 2 people with pretty and one person with cute in their group it’s 3 x 5 = 15 points (fans).
No one has those abilities then they get nothing.
Towards the end (slide 23) each group chooses an album cover and then I cycle through the results.

Warning the last slide has a picture of Soju on it so might be inappropriate at some schools.

Attached is a copy of the working sheet. The red lines are from slide 13 when they all lose one ability and the big red blotch is from slide 15 when someone leaves to go solo.
Ignore the cash column, I have since removed that element.

Thanks Andyroo, that really helped to clear things up. Can't wait to try it out! I think this topic will be perfect for the last week of class before our exam week.
