Students don't learn English because it's a wonderful language that they just love to use when playing with their NET teacher or that will make them more whole or whatever -- it's all about the test and the test hasn't been updated to reflect the supposed communicative syllabus that the gov/representatives purport to have successfully implemented. What we do is not currently important nor are we no matter how wonderful we think we are as teachers or how important we believe ourselves to be because we have solid command of English (first language is actually kind of easy). You know those newspaper reports about how parents believe that students learn better from their KETs? Well - they do, though that's no fault of ours: KETs drill students in translation exercises and explicitly teach grammar points in the students' first language which is what they need for the current test to get into uni/have careers, etc. With NEAT, students will learn to use English but only as a byproduct of test prep (realism: how often do/will students use English? With you? In your classroom? Students don't need to know how to speak English save for passing their tests but NEAT is a test that when prepped for will actually improve students' ability to use the language).
