Halloween - What Happens Next? Class
« on: November 01, 2013, 02:00:16 PM »
Here is a quick Halloween/Horror Movie lesson which I put together for the students at my mixed high school.

My students are quite low level, so I don't normally spend a lot of time on powerpoints. I just go to the main facts. I spent about 5 minutes talking about Halloween and asking questions, then I went straight into the board game. There are 30 students in each class so I divided them into 6 groups.

The board game is pretty self explanatory. They move around by rolling a dice, and each picture represents a certain rule. For the 'What Happens Next' rule, I played a scene from a horror movie and stopped it at a certain point. They then had a few minutes to write down what they thought happened in the next scene (every group had to write something down for this, regardless of which group was moving around the board during that turn). After they all told me what they thought would happen next, I played the rest of the scene and the groups who guessed correctly or just wrote good English gained 2 more candies.

Here are the scenes I used and the times at which they occur in each movie. You can probably find all of them on Youtube, but being a fan of many horror movies, I just used the full movie files.

The Conjuring:
Clap Scene - 39.00-40.09 (STOP at 40.09 and then ask 'What Happens Next?')
Wardrobe Scene - 41.50-42.20
Doll Scene - 1.26.05-1.27.08

Predator:
Hawkins Death - 41.00-41.15
Blains Death - 46.34-46.57

Alien:
Cat Scene - 1.01.57 - 1.02.45
Death Scene - 1.06.35.1.07.15
Tunnel Scene - 1.13.20-1.14.22

Cabin in the Woods:
Wolf Scene - 25.50-26.30
Bike Jump Scene - 59.20-59.43

Jaws:
Face in the Boat Scene - 48.35-49.40

American Psycho:
Axe Scene - 26.55-27.22

Psycho (1960 version):
Shower Scene - 46.30-47.00

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003 version):
Axe Scene - 30.00-30.42

Some of these scenes may be inappropriate for your classes but I showed them all to my co-teacher beforehand and he said they were okay. I've been doing this class all week and very few of the students, if any, seem to have had a problem with the scenes. I think they've been enjoying getting the fright of their lives!

Pretty sweet. I'm jealous of you teachers that get to play some more interesting video files. Did your students know Freddy, Michael, Jason, or Leatherface?

Dropbox is the BEST way to coordinate files between home and school. Click here to get it --> https://db.tt/JSMXsrdm

Some of them were aware of Leatherface (that is, when I put his picture on the screen, they said 'Chainsaw!') but none of them knew Michael Myers of Freddy Kruger. Need to educate them further!
