Murdery Mystery Lesson...Missing?
« on: February 05, 2014, 11:19:44 AM »
Previously there was a murder mystery lesson that was posted here on waygook that I can't find now.  My students LOVED it.  The lesson involved reading two sets of clues, and learning about 6 different characters to find out who killed a rich old man.  Spoiler Alert:  His young wife did it.

I was hoping to find who the original poster was so that I could ask where they got the idea from.  Did they write the entire story-line themselves?  Or did they get some ideas from another website?  I would really love to have another murder mystery lesson for my students that is similar to the one posted before but don't really know where to begin.  For reference, here is the link I had saved to the lesson, which now appears not to work.
http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,44817.msg294494/topicseen.html#new

Does anyone know what lesson I'm talking about and who the original poster was?  Or where they got the materials from?  Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi,

Unfortunately, I do not have the original, nor do I know the OP; I only have the modified, level-specific version which I made to suit my students in summer school. Hope it helps.

First using the power point go over the vocabulary, plot, and character slides.  Then give groups of students (4-6 is usually good) the character profile page and the first set of clues.  Also give them the worksheet to fill out the information.  My students usually don't use the worksheet to fill out the information but that's fine.

After a few minutes, give the students the second set of clues.  While they are reading the information and solving the mystery, walk around the room and talk to them to get their opinions and answer questions.  I find that this is a very good activity for students who are usually shy about talking.  They're so passionate about the lesson that they really get into it.

Once you think all groups are ready, reveal the murderer.

Honestly, this lesson is AWESOME.  My students love it and after I do it, they beg to have another lesson like it.  If anyone knows who the original poster is/was please share!  I would love to know more about where they got their idea from.

I was going through the materials for this lesson and wonder if anyone had a problem with killing a real person? The victim is the CEO of Lotte Department Store. The materials are good but I think I will change the identities and use pictures of actors and make the victim a CEO of an unspecified company. I am curious if your students recognized him?

Nancy,  The one posted here has been altered from the original.  The original definitely had fake people but with the same storyline.  Here is what I have saved.  The only thing that was altered was that I added question mark slides before the final reveal to build up anticipation.

Can anyone tell me why the young wife is the only possible suspect?  For example, why could the son not have committed the murder if he was there at the right time, and also said he wanted to kill his father.  I just want to know what to tell my students if they bring this up.

Someone please debunk the reasons why every other character is not guilty.  (i'm a terrible detective if you can't tell   :afro:)

As far as I see there is no way you could eliminate the other people to really conclude Tiffany killed Alfred or even verify that she did indeed do it.  I guess the case just is that she is the most likely with the only circumstantial evidence.

Thanks bradyt for the original version. I plan on using it for my class. I think the kids will love it and I appreciate you posting it!
Orange Thief Wow! You are a detective! I changed a couple of the clues and had the Martins leaving the dinner party as well as Oliver when he came back for the second time. I will emphasize that the clues are all that we know and to base their decision on the information they have been given. Fingers crossed!

This mystery looks great.  Could anyone give an estimate for how long it takes?  I have fairly high level students.
Thanks!

BonnyM, for all of my classes, regardless of level, this took about 40-50 minutes.  The full class time.

Do you give them the clues, or do you only read them out?

I give them the character page and first page of clues, then add the second page after about 5 or 10 minutes.  This gives the students time to read everything and start piecing together information.

LOVE THIS!! I just made a few changes because my students are quite high level. I started with the Youtube video "Whodunnit" and had them try to find the 21 changes. Then when doing the murder mystery, I gave each student a character and assigned specific clues for each character to read. This way they were trying to prove their innocence which added to the discussion.

Thanks for posting the Whodunnit 21 changes. I love having short activities like this to fill a class or to get the kids talking. It took a while (and many repeats)but I managed to get all 21! It is a great add on for this lesson.
