Anyone try those genetic ancestry tests?
« on: May 12, 2017, 10:58:29 AM »
I've always been keen to try it, especially since I've heard that my ancestors came from Germany, England, Turkey and Malaysia and I'm sure the results would be very interesting.

Apparently, the tests are becoming more popular and thankfully, the prices are becoming very competitive and with the procedure simply being to swab your mouth. I'm not looking to spend more than 100 bucks.

My only concern is that many of the test takers and labs are/in North America. Since I'm not North American, I'm concerned my roots might be a bit trickier to trace.

Any recommendations?

Cheers

I also believe you have to be present in the US to get it completed as well.

It's done through mail.
They send you a vial, which you fill with saliva or a swab to wipe the inside of your mouth. You send it back to their labs and they send you the results.

I just ordered a kit and sent in the swab sample.

I ordered using Livingdna.com

A bit over $100, but from the reviews I read you get a lot better information with this company. The price includes postage too.  https://dnatestingchoice.com/en-us/ancestry#provider946

https://www.livingdna.com/en-us

*Side note- they specialize in the British Isles DNA strands, but not exclusive to that geographic area.

Here is a random results blog I found: https://cruwys.blogspot.kr/2017/01/my-living-dna-results-part-2-mtdna-and.html

As to the company being American and not being able to trace not so common ancestries, I know a few East Asians and a girl from Central Asia who got it done. She got some interesting results.

I don't think your roots would be any trickier to trace. It is all done beyond a level of answering questions...I guess I mean since it is basically a DNA test that traces your roots, where you are from wouldn't make any difference in performing the trace...I would assume~

I've done Ancestry.com's test. In the results, they assign percentages of your DNA to different areas of the world. I was kind of displeased by their analysis as it seemed inconsistent with my mom's results. I don't have the results in front of me but my results showed a decent chunk from Britain and almost none from Western Europe; my mom's showed almost none from Britain and a decent chunk from Western Europe. There's virtually 0% chance my dad is the source of the "Britain" DNA. I'm no geneticist, but it really seems like they have something off with their British vs. Western Europe analysis. I get that those two regions are probably very similar genetically, but then they shouldn't make that claim.

They also tell you which other Ancestry.com users who have taken the DNA test you're likely related to, and how closely, and I am pleased with that, but I'm not sure if you're interested in that.

I haven't tried one but I know a girl who did and now she's upset cuz her whole life she's been told she's got indigenous roots and she's been all about indigenous rights and yelling at people who thing "dream catchers" are pretty, shaming people for wearing patterns that resemble patterns of her ancestors, ect. Anyways she did a genetic test and found out she's white mixed with white and white on the side. She's like English, Dutch, German and a bit of Polish so she's quieted down on her whole "don't steal me people's culture" thing. I'm not saying she was wrong to have a stance on the issue, but it's kind of ironic that she was unknowingly doing what she was fighting against...

Anyways, more on topic, I hear the ancestery.com one is kindda trash cuz most people get at least one "unknown" part. They apparently didn't have a big enough sample size for some groups so you're likely to get an 8% mystery result.

Reminds me of this

Yeah, I read about a guy who knew he had significant Ghanaian ancestry and they just blanketed most of his results as they didn't have enough data on the region. This was through Ancestry.com.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/science-news/9912822/DNA-ancestry-tests-branded-meaningless.html

I watched a lot of Youtube videos on the subject before trying it out, and among them were a handful of folks who tried multiple tests from different companies and got very nearly the same results from each company, so I'd say it's more than just "genetic astrology". Even if it is such, it's gonna be better than "digging around in your loft" for those of us whose lineage and background were stolen from us IJS.

I've been wanting to do one of these for a while, just for funsies. It doesn't seem like any of the major ones like 23&me or ancestry.ca ship to Korea though. I bet if they do, the shipping costs will be astronomical.

Looks like I'll wait until I'm back in Canada

Some of the companies will only ship to US addresses, or a select few other countries. There are DNA testing kits that will be shipped to Korea.

Most of you should either know much of your ancestry or be able to trace it/ have it traced as many historic registers are now online and available.

That's a bit more fun than just getting a dna % thrown at you surely?
Imagine your Korea...

I haven't (and don't really feel the need to) but one of my cousins did it a few years ago. My cousin is biracial, so I guess it was more interesting in her case for her to see the results.

That would be true of places like Britain. But the new world it can a bit more difficult as records were often not brought across the oceans. Many people moved to places to get a new start and didn't bring anything, or changed their names on purpose.
For my mum's side I can trace back to the mid 18th century on some lines. My dad's, especially paternal side is a dead end after one generation.

My Aunt did a test like this. When she got her results the company told her: because her genes were half from her dad and half from her mom that her results were not complete. Also, if my mom got tested her results would be different. So just a heads up, these tests are complicated.

I don't want to turn this conversation into a rant about the still-lasting effects of slavery, so I'll just keep it at this. I'm a Black American. My ancestors weren't allowed to learn to write. Their history was thrown out. There is literally nothing.
