Summer vacation suggestions
« on: May 25, 2017, 09:06:26 AM »
So I was recently told my vacation schedule and it will run a little tight this time.  But I was wondering what do you guys think about my ideas for my vacation which is July 28~Aug. 7th.  (Honestly I was thinking July 29~Aug 5/6 just to have time to decompress from air travel....yeah I'm one of those that needs a vacation from the vacation LOL jetlag, leg stiffness etc)

So here are my ideas.

Indonesia

Dubai

Australia

Or doing a half Japan/half China trip with much focus being on Chengdu and Tibet.
(I've been to both Japan and China.  China I loved it and wish I had time to go see that big Buddha in Chengdu but I had no time and money was running low.  And Japan well... I went to Tokyo as was unimpressed and I didn't plan it very well.  But after more research and seeing other travel shows really check out Japan I think I have a better idea of what I want to do vs just wondering around aimless like a noob.  Plus don't know last time I went to Japan in Aug seemed like a sucky time because Mt. Fuji was blocked by clouds and it was really hot.  So yeah.... I might do a China/HongKong trip but who knows.

and finally....

Jeju....never been.  Yeah I'm a bad waygookin here LOL

So ideas?  Suggestions?  (P.S. I've already been to Thailand, Vietnam, and Philippines.  I am quiet aware they are running great deals right now but I want to go either to somewhere I've never been or do a redo of places that I have been.  I could go to a temple in Chaingmai that I didn't see but otherwise I'm not really gun ho on doing those places again even though they are wonderful!!!  (I could see more Philippines too!)

Summer time is a better time to go to Australia then the others, as it will be cooler then. Still nice and summery, but not blistering. I went to Brisbane in the summertime a few years ago and loved it.

Indonesia is great, but don't spend much time in Jakarta. I went down to Flores mostly and Bali for a little while. Flores was really great. I got to go on one of the Komodo dragon tours, which I had wanted to do since I was 7.

How long do you suggest for Australia though?  Because if I leave Friday I won't get there till Saturday and plus I would need to leave on Aug. 5th to get in on Sunday and have a day to rest on Monday so I can start dreaded Summer Camp

As with any country, it depends on what you want to see and do, so it's kinda hard to suggest to you how long.  Australia is huge, so in a week you won't see a lot more than one state, or a couple of cities in each state.

Keep in mind that it's technically winter.  Queensland ( btw if you want beaches Gold Coast = touristy, Sunshine Coast = less so) will be mild to warm, occasionally rainy I think.  Sydney will be mostly comfortable.  Any further south you're getting cooler.  Melbourne will be rainy, windy, haily, mild, cold, sunny, errr, everything really except warm.  Melbourne's weather is notoriously unpredictable.  Melbourne has more art, culture, cafes and music, Queensland has beaches and sun.

Like Kotter said, it just depends how much you want to see. If you want to stay in one or two cities, 1 week is probably fine. I was there for 2 weeks myself and we mostly focused on Gold Coast. We had one or two day trips. I don't know much about the weather in the other places during that time frame. Brisbane was 70-75 and sunny, which was perfect for me since I'm from PNW and that's our normal summer temp.

And because it is technically their winter, I would imagine it's a lot less touristy.

Taiwan.

Not interested.

I loved Taiwan, but to each their own.

I'm interested in Taiwan.  I've no summer vacation plans currently but I feel the itch to go somewhere.  I'd like to hear more from those who enjoyed it.

I went to Taiwan this last winter, I liked it but there isn't a ton of stuff to do. It's nicer than South Korea but I found the food to be really bad, I guess I just had bad luck finding good restaurants. I'd recommend going there in winter, it's like 18 to 22C, though it can rain a bit. Must be a swamp in summer but you could go to the beaches in the south.

If you want a short flight and a relaxing beach destination, Okinawa is awesome. It's not crowded at all, rental cars are cheap, and the food is usually pretty good. I found a semi-secret beach there which is nice.

Okay.  Let's see.  Good food, especially at the markets and on the street.    Beer pretty cheap.  Very hot and humid though.  Really, really friendly people generally, and helpful too.  Wish I spent more time exploring Taipei.  Rented scooters and rode around Toroko Gorge, which was awesome.  Only spent 10ish days, went pretty much the whole way around the island, but could have easily spent another week there taking more time in each place.  Thought the beach in the south was a bit average, slightly better than any Korean beach I've been to, but nothing compared to SE Asia unfortunately.

why?

Dubai is a sandy hole filled with nothing but buildings and blazing heat. you'd really rather go there than to Taiwan?

Doesn't Taiwan have a bunch of tall building all clustered together.  Good for you that you had a blast there but I couldn't be bothered.  Sorry.

I would also recommend Taiwan. Love the food, the people are friendly and helpful, and there are plenty of things to do. Though, admittedly, it will be hot and steamy.

Places to see:
Taipei - National Museum, the Chaing Kai Shek Memorial, and any temple (so different from Korean, Japanese, and the few remaining in China), 101 Building,
Toroko Gorge - Amazing!!!! Doing it by scooter would be great fun.
Hot springs - Along the east coast are loads of hot springs. Though in the summer, it might not be appealing.
Night markets - Somewhat similar to Korean night markets, so you go for the food. Awesome.
Taichung - Tea plantations and a visit to the native Taiwanese places.
Koashung - Great seafood and lighthouse and buddha temple with a jinormous gold buddha.
East Coast - Totally different from the west coast. You'll see remnants of Dutch and Portuguese influences.

Not sure about transportation around the country, but transportation within Taipei is easy.

I really enjoy Taiwan. If things ever blow up here, literally, that'll be my next port.

But if Taiwan isn't really your cup of tea, Okinawa or Jeju sound pretty good.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions but from what I posted above I was looking for which of those places that were listed would be best for the time I have off.

If I posted which is better Pepsi or Coke it doesn't really help if I have dozen of replies that say Fanta.  I asked among the places listed: Indonesia, Dubai, Australia where is best to go.  I wasn't really expecting people to reply with Turkey.  I know Turkey is nice but I don't want to go there.

If you do Indonesia I would recommend Bali and the Gili Islands, 5-7 days I guess but the more the better. Relaxing and the food is great. Just stay away from the tourist hot-spots like Kuta beach.

The gilis are a real treat if you like beaches and swimming and sunsets.
