As always, I find the sheer inconsistency in Korean public schools to be rather frustrating. So what's your situation?

With how large my school's class sizes are, I think they are equally as confused on what to do for the homeroom teachers. I'm sure 31 kids in a live stream chat would be super laggy. As such, my coordinator (I have no coteachers) has just shrugged and said, when he finds out more, he'll let me know, but for now he has no clue what I'll be doing. I'm making PPT activities out of boredom, with no clue if they'll be used.

There are no Korean English teachers at your school? Weird!

There are for other grades. But I am the English teacher for 5th and 6th grade. The homeroom teachers are supposed to sit in on classes and help with classroom management, but against...emphasis on supposed to. haha All the same, it hasn't ever been too difficult to manage and they let me make my own lessons and use the book as little as I want as long as I teach the basic grammar or topics of the book in my own way.

Minimal instructions relayed to me. You'd figure the Ministry of Education would just put standard material online to tie them over until they let kids back into schools. Isn't the curriculum standardized anyways? There is really minor variations in textbooks across all the subjects nationwide. And they have the same Suneung exam anyways.

Depends... is your school still on 56k dial-up? 

For one high school my instructions have been to make "online lessons" which translates to narrated PPTs and short worksheets/ quizzes. For now. I haven't contacted my other high school (who during the school year is just like "lol do whatever you want") My middle school has just told me to do nothing as they'll be showing online videos from EBS.

Any ideas on good learning activities? physical worksheets are kind of out of the question as students won't be able to print everything.

Couldn't you give them PDF worksheets and they can fill those on their computer? That's what I'm doing.

Yeah, I'm extremely confused.

Not only with online teaching, but I've got 3 new elementary schools this year and today was my first day at one of them. The school is tiny, 40 students, and I have no CT nor have I met any of the students. A HR teacher who speaks some English was put in charge of relaying information to me and gave me a printout from the POE, which lists the following options the school might ask:

- Co-teach/assist online classes
- Skype/video call the students
- phone the students
- help students with essay writing

etc.

"Your work will vary depending on your school."

So, yeah... vague, confusing and inconsistent #Korean education. To be fair, this is a situation nobody has prepared for so can't be too hard on them.

It seemed like the HR teacher was saying that the school would prefer I do the Skype/Facetime video call. With so few students in a class, that's possible, but 40min video call is only possible with students who already have a high degree of proficiency in the target language. The thought of stretching out a 40min video call with a bunch of students barely able to introduce themselves in English fills me with dread.

I'll probably be suggesting recorded lessons and worksheets for the students to complete.
