Texas to allow unlicensed carrying of handguns
« on: May 27, 2021, 09:07:32 am »
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-57239610

Yee haw, git yer shootin' irns' boys, we gonna have ourselves a shoot out!

Yeehaw!

Yep, I'm pretty sure this kind of legislation will have a positive and wonderful
effect on the great state of Texas. Yeah, I'm talkin' to you, boy!

Gun control groups point to mass shootings in Texas in recent years. Two shootings in
August 2019 killed 30 people, a shooting at a high school in 2018 left 10 people dead and
27 people were killed in a shooting at a church in 2017.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-57260869

Across the US, there have been 230 mass shootings so far this year, according to the Gun
Violence Archive. A mass shooting is defined by the group as a crime in which four or more
people are shot.

The statistical odds of dying this way are so small they are not worth worrying about.

Homicides per 100,000:

USA: 5.35
World average: 7.03
Philippines: 11.02
South Africa: 33.97

The world’s a safe place. All countries are getting better in this regard.

Ah, OK. Now I see. So people are actually safer in:

Sudan 5.16
Angola 4.85
Pakistan 4.41
Somalia 4.31

:)

Are those countries reporting statistics accurately? Do they even have the infrastructure to do so?

Murder rate and safety are not the same thing. There is still risk of disease and death due to accidents. Additionally there are things like banditry. Finally, it is likely in the case of Sudan and Somalia that records are extremely flimsy.

Of course, by that "logic"  you could declare Morocco, Ghana, and Malaysia to be safer than Canada and therefore Canada is somehow wrong and stupid.

Anyone with half a brain knows that for things like this, you don't use a straight ranking, you use a tier because a ranking can be misleading.

Oops, sorry. I should have said: Less likely to be gunned down in the street.

Actually Somalia looks quite nice. Healthcare is probably cheaper than the US
anyway.

I know you think you're making a good point and looking clever, but you're really not. You really need to learn how to choose your examples. You could have compared other OECD countries to the U.S., but instead you trotted out countries with spotty record-keeping and sustained violence and no-go zones.

It doesn't help your case, it weakens it because it makes you look too stupid to understand the concept of "incomplete and unreliable data"

OK, let's do some simple math. Although maybe a bit over your head.

365 days a year. 230 mass shootings so far this year. This comes out to
a mass shooting in the US every 1.59 days. Or about one every 36 hours.
And this is just May. These numbers will get even more horrific as the
years goes on.

Is this what you mean by "sustained violence"? I'm glad we have such
a brilliant mind like yours to point these things out.

Americans on here, raise your hand if you’ve experienced a mass shooting or know someone who has. No one? That’s because the population of the country is so big.

I’ve lived in America for a long time and have never been shot at, nor has anyone in my family. I also don’t have any friends who have. And I know a lot of people.

By the same logic then, almost nobody in the US has died of SARS-Cov-2.  Oh, wait. The tally
is now over 600,000 isn't it?

I know one person who died of coronavirus. She was in her 90s. I know many people who caught coronavirus. Most were fine though. Not sick for more than a day. You?

Less than one in five hundred Americans died from coronavirus.

Not that many proportionally, though certainly more than from gun violence.

America has a large elderly population compared to other countries. Also Americans are fatter due to the extra disposable income and abundance of delicious food everywhere, among other reasons.

OK, let's do some simple math. Although maybe a bit over your head.
The problem is you have to adjust for population, which you didn't.

Also, the definition of "mass shooting" is anytime more than 4 people are shot, not necessarily killed. The problem is that people, (often dipshit Euros), look at this statistic and think that means there's hundreds of Columbines a year, and thinking because they can do basic math, this makes them experts because they are leftist/European and therefore they are making a smart observations.

Adjusted for population, your odds of being in a mass shooting in America are vanishingly small.

Anyone with a brain who is actually able to process risk rationally would understand that your biggest threats in America are obesity and heart disease, automobiles, opiates/drug overdoses and diabetes.

Haha, oh man. We are going way back to first year stats here. What do you think this means:

Homicide Rate per 100k

This takes population into account. You obviously have no idea of university stats. This is
just a question, but, did you finish high school?

Yeah, SPQR is right- this isn't a great point.

In my case, I know 1 person shot at during a crime (pastor), 2 murdered by gunshot (classmate, coworker- not super sad about that one drug murder of someone shady), 1 suicide by gunshot (roommate), and 1 murdered by bludgeon (daughter of close family friend). That's before we get to people killed in Iraq or vague acquaintances or just major crimes in the area- i.e. customer who killed assailants during a drug robbery, student at my uni murdered on campus, customer who decided to suicide himself by arson, OD deaths (f me, probably know at least 5 people who went that way), etc.

I don't consider my experience representative either.

That's not what was determined in your mass shooting statistic. It simply listed the frequency of mass shootings.

Now, your earlier posted homicide statistic I pointed out how such a stat should be placed in tiers to reflect its actual prevalence, which is what good statisticians will do when the actual value difference is low, but there is a significant gap in ranking. Of course, you didn't do that.

You also cherry-picked results to fulfill your narrative. Not only did you include several countries with spotty records, as mentioned you failed to compare a country like Canada to Morocco and make a similar "This country must be shit because it is behind" conclusion.

Please tell me, oh math genius where the value for homicides/100,000 is in this-

If I lived in the States I'd have a gun. I'd practice and get a concealed carry permit.
