2 truths and a lie
« on: June 19, 2021, 06:28:12 pm »
I have been teaching in Guangzhou for 12 years. I teach in a public middle school and high school. My PPT are all high quality as they have been changed almost every year to meet my high standards. Yes, my PPT are very long and many of them have few words. This is because I teach oral English and I think it is better for my students to hear me talk than to read the words. My classes are 40 minutes long, and some of my PPT are split into 2 lessons. If you are in China and you would like to contact me, my QQ number is 1182497989.

This is one of the few games I play with my students. I play ME vs THEM. I get to guess which of their 3 sentences is a lie. I choose one student and then show them a famous person in the PPT and let them guess which of the 3 is a lie.
The key here is to teach them so many things can be opinions. I make them remove any sentence that is an opinion such as: I am good at ___. I am tall/short. My hair is long. I live far from the school. These are all opinions and I show them that they must be facts. (you may think you live far from your school, but the people in Brazil think you live close to the school. etc)
I start with a warm up video and i stop the video when the dragon starts to blow fire. then i come back to the video at the end of class.

Excellent work. I played it with my intermediate class and they enjoyed it a lot.

I have several times over the years had students write three statements: two must be true, one must be false.

If no one guesses the true one, you get two points. If someone guesses it right then they get one point. A yummy treat is on the line: e.g., first pick from Krispy Kreme donut selection, Baskin-Robbins flavor selection (one flavor per student), or like one fruit (a dragonfruit, a grapefruit, a bunch of red grapes - not purple 'cuz some students don't know red exists), and so on...

It is a great way to get students to construct sentences. High level or low level, each can do it. Hints help. Getting other students to say what, helps (never give the answer yourself - a tactic of the CELTA method).

At my 100-ish student hagwon, I have a "Game Day" planned for the two days after Korean Thanksgiving (Korean harvest festival; "Chuseok" in their language), next Thursday and Friday (some classes that were missed earlier in the week combined).

Two truths and a lie can be awesome once students have done all the prep for it (this week for next).

It is a tried and true crowd pleaser when prepared for.

Help others, especially animals. Say what you think, be considerate of others. Appreciate more than deprecate. Teach well, jump on teachable moments. Enjoy Korea as it is, without changing it. Dwell! Yet, at times, change your life for the better. "The most important [thing] is to have a good day."

An alteration of this which could be fun is true or false sentences. Students have five minutes to write sentences about themselves. (This way everyone finishes at the same time.) The average number of completed sentences in this time for a middle school class is four. Students come to the front of the class, reading each sentence. The audience guesses true or false. Good for small classes. I started with two truths and one lie and evolved into this which has worked better.

Thanks LI. A good idea. I'll give it a try on Friday, and Saturday morning's classes. Perfect for high school students.

Two truths and a lie is my least favorite ice breaker.

I agree Billy. The quick snap version of this can get ridiculous...all too easy to recognize the lie. LI's written version sounds way better. It gives students a chance to think a bit longer and construct some descent ideas. I would even give them a bit longer to come up with statements that could be true and are very difficult to automatically dismiss.

My students always do the same thing:

"I have a cat. I am 16 years old. Eric Zhou isn't gay. Which is a lie?"

sounds like they could use some inspiration. I do not use this as an ice breaker. I use this after spending many weeks teaching them how to be original. "Try to use sentences nobody else would use.  Show me how clever you are, not how easily you can write simple sentences."

I have used this for over a decade and I have inspired my students to be original. They often surprise me with amazing ideas.
