Unpopular Opinions Megathread
« on: October 19, 2021, 02:23:53 pm »
State your unpopular opinions here. Anything you want to get off your chest.

Unpopular Opinion: Qdoba is better than Chipotle. Chipotle ain't bad, but I liked Qdoba's rice, cheese and meats far better. They just had a "cleaner" taste compared to Chipotle.

Unpopular Opinion: The Phantom Menace was a good movie except for Jar-Jar. Probably one of the best of the entire series. Better than Return of the Jedi. Better than that overdone The Empire Strikes Back.

Unpopular Opinion: Rap/Hip-Hop has been more influential on today's young people than rock. If the two were a line on a graph in terms of influence, rap has either passed or is close to passing on its share of influence. That doesn't mean rock's influence is nil, just that it's share has been steadily declining for over 20 years now.

Unpopular Opinion: Okay, maybe not so unpopular, but Janeway murdered Tuvix, the crew of the Voyager were accessories and they all should have been court-martialed. And the Maquis members were a disgrace to the Maquis for not fighting Janeway on this. Also, Although i think Janeway went over the top and over the line on the Equinox, at least I sympathize with her there and see her point.

I agree....loved their bowls... also weren't they a little cheaper? I don't remember.

People who preface everything with "In my opinion," are daft.

Unless you're exclusively talking to people under 14, there's no need. Do you really think subjective/objective needs to be clarified every time you open your mouth? Stop being afraid of telling people what you think. We know you're not God.

Conversely, the opposite is true, too. If I say The Beatles are the greatest band in history, you don't need to chime in with "That's your opinion, it's not a fact" or "Musical taste is subjective."

Yes, frigging obviously. Do these people think they sound intelligent?  "HEY GUYS, I JUST DISCOVERED WHAT FACTS VS OPINIONS ARE AT THE RIPE OLD AGE OF 26.

Congrats.

Also, the "abortions are no big deal and they should flow free like water" people are, not as bad as the religious right, but Jesus, have some humility.

Abortions are rough. And yes, you are stopping a future life from growing and no, it's not comparable to pulling out or "wasting your seed."

Once the egg is breached, that's a future human. I'm FOR abortion, but can we stop pretending like abortions are no big deal/just a medical procedure/my body, my choice?

It's a future human that is being snuffed out. Is a clump of cells a human? I honestly don't know, I don't think we CAN know, but stop pretending like you're not getting rid of a future kid that's brewing in there. It is.

Again, I am for legal safe abortions for all, but some people take it way too far in the other direction. Have SOME humility.

unfortunately a feature of the terminally-online era is that if you don't explicitly clarify the difference between opinion and fact people will deliberately misconstrue it if they don't like you. hell, even if you do plaster "in my opinion" over everything, they'll edit that out and misconstrue it anyways

The problem I have is when posters are above 26 years old and still cannot differentiate between fact and opinion. For example.

okay? they're also all pretty easily demonstrable facts of the 2016 election. also, i'd love to see some actual examples of these memes you keep talking about, because for all you people go on about them nobody's been able to link me to any.

- the Dems are inept
in 2016? they def were. Hillarys campaign team was a mess and basically split into two camps (Bill Clinton/his friends/Hillary's old staffers vs. Robby Mook). along with the whole operation being completely disjointed she also stuck it out with the wrong side, ironically enough she would've been better off listening to Bill, who was more for lots of smaller events/talking to as many people as possible/etc, as opposed to Mook who basically ran much of the campaign off of advertising/social media.

- Hillary is a shit candidate who spoke down to her voterbase in key states
i mean, she did. or, even worse, she didn't speak to a lot of them at all.

- the voterbase are fed up with the establishment
they were. i think trump's election is pretty solid proof of that, lol. hillary's campaign didn't offer anything new other than first female president and people weren't buying it.

- Trump talks a good game
he did overall. obviously you can find plenty of instances to the contrary but his general rhetoric pretty well matched what the electorate were looking for. now obviously im not saying he meant it or followed up on it or anything... just that he talked a good game, which he did.

- americans are racist and also let's give them lots of conspiracy theories
russia didnt give us qanon or pizzagate or anti-maskers or any of that shit. again, russia isnt some magical bogeyman thats responsible for everything wrong with america, we can come up with stupid conspiracy theories ourselves.

1) I'm not above 26 years old
2) Those are all, in fact, easily demonstrable facts, if you'd read actual journalism or pick up literally any book about the 2016 election. Not my fault you're willfully ignorant

There is a very big difference in someone saying

A) The Beatles are the greatest band in history.

and

B) I think The Beatles are the greatest band in history.

There isn't though. Everyone knows that they're both opinions.

Unless you're seven years old. What is this meekness? "Well, uh, is it okay if I, uhhhh, speak, please?"

If you have an opinion, just say it. Don't be a dick about it, but you don't need to qualify it with "Here is what I think."

It's not as simple as that.  Your example is easier to spot as an opinion because it's a superlative. However, there is art which is recognised as being great, even though you might not personally like it. E.g. a person might say 'The Sistine Chapel is a great work of art' , even though they might not personally want to have it on their ceiling.

I am sorry, but you are wrong. My degree was in communication and I am telling you that "A" is objective and leaves no room for arguement. While "B" is subjective and entirely based on opinion, thus making it a valid statement.

Seriously, would you argue with someone if they said, "K2 is the tallest mountain on earth." Of course you would because they are wrong.

In example "A", all it takes is one person to disagree with the statement and it becomes invalid. There are plenty of people that hate The Beatles. Of course none of them know good music, but that is subjective too.

If you met someone and the only vegetable they had ever eaten in their entire life was brussel sprouts and they said, "Brussel sprouts are the most delicious vegetable in the world." Would you flat out agree with them or would you argue another point?

Man up, and admit you are wrong. You'll look better.

There is a difference between: "A" is the best, and, I think "A" is the best. (Unless of course "A" is the best in whatever happens to be being discussed.)

If you can't see that take a communication course.

Seriously, would you argue with someone if they said, "K2 is the tallest mountain on earth."Of course you would because they are wrong.

And that would be factually incorrect.

It's hardly the same thing. "The best" is inherently subjective and doesn't need clarification on it being an opinion or not.

It being INHERENT is the idea here. Again, if someone says "That galbi restaurant is the best restaurant in Seoul," are you gonna be that guy?

"Well, Mr. Kim that is your opinion. Not everyone will share it, it is inherently subjective."

Guess who looks dumber? It's not Mr. Kim. You can either

A) ask why Mr. Kim thinks that

B) counter with a different opinion

or C) placate him "Wow, that's so interesting Mr. Kim."

With something subjective like the best band or the most delicious vegetable, every adult should be capable of recognizing it is an opinion.
