Dune 2021, thoughts?
« on: October 27, 2021, 03:58:13 pm »
I wont be discussing particular scenes, so no spoilers there, but the books been out for over 50yrs, along with a 1984 movie so, yeah.

Rating 9.3/10

Watched it at home as I've been burned before going to the local CGV with people using their phones, noisy patrons and clueless old people
taking their grandchildren to see "a space movie" and having the kids get bored after 5min and run around the theatre. Luckily, I have an excellent TV and sound system, which is a MUST for this movie.

It's clear to see that Villeneuve understood Dune and is a fan of the source material. The near impossible task of Dune is filtering everything from the book into a cinema friendly experience and Villeneuve
accomplished this MASTERFULLY. Some parts were left out, though understandably as 150min is already pushing it. The massive scale of everything was always put into proportion and almost everything
felt like a proper interpretation of the book, with a slick modern edge. The David Lynch movie got flak for simplifying Dune into a space 'Robin Hood' good guy vs. bad guy, while this makes it clear that in Dune,
there are no good or bad guys.

My only criticism was that the fight scenes could've used a bit more pizazz and the 'weirding way' was basically just short shots of a few acrobatics, instead of Matrix/DBZ style movements the book describes.
However, they could always revisit this for Part 2 as combat and fighting isn't really a big part of the first half of the book. While it didn't bother me, I can see how those not familiar with the books or even previous movie
could get lost in this movie as many things aren't explained.

Loved it! Watched it twice at home and will probably watch it at the cinema before it stops showing.
Part 2 has been confirmed for October 22nd 2023.

Correct, don't know why I put in 2022.
2023 is actually much sooner than I expected.

Yeah I enjoyed it. Watched it twice actually as the missus wanted to see it after I had watched it.

Liked the book when I read it back in the eighties.

I liked it. I have a list of nitpicks I won't bore everyone with, but it's better than I expected. Not sure how people would follow it without having read the book though.

This is so reductive lol

Yeah, I don't give a toss about Formula 1 but Senna is such a well-made documentary that the fact that it's about a sport I don't care for is irrelevant.

Same with The Social Network. "Why would I want to watch a movie about Facebook?"

Do these people think it's gonna be 2 hours of a couple of people coding? It's not. It's about isolation and betrayal. It's about an entirely new business sector in its infancy. It's a modern masterpiece.

It's like saying Dune is a How-To guide on desert living. haha

"I'd watch Dune if the main characters were elected officials. The fact that they lead their country as a Monarchy really puts me off."

Get over yourself, Holy Heck. Do you think NOT seeing Dune is some sort of political statement against QEII?

I definitely recommend watching it in IMAX! Zimmer drumming in my ears with the incredible visuals put me at the edge of my seat.

The yiungster is entitled to lead and others will help him.

A popular theme with today's youth.

Don't jump on a guy for having a different take.

Don't jump on a guy for having a different take.

This sentence does not make any sense.

It's essentially "Don't disagree with me, I am above that."

Also, the "Hero's Journey" is the most common and oldest story-telling device there is.

You're under no obligation to like it, but it's certainly not subversive or bizarre.

I don't want to see Reservoir Dogs. There are criminals in the story and crime is bad. Can't support it.

The original David Lynch movie grossly oversimplified the story into what could be argued as nothing more than what you've described.

Those who have read the novels know that Dune isn't about that, at all and even this new movie alone tells the viewer that this isn't about some young, white kid coming to save the natives. Dune is about "plans within plans within plans" and without being verbose, Villeneuve expressed this complexity in a way that was entertaining and understandable to someone new to the franchise as well as satisfying and deep enough for veterans to appreciate.

But, hey. I generally refuse to watch Hollywood movies that venerate single-motherhood as some kind of achievement while patronising housewives; lady, you chose to have a kid outside of wedlock, with a douchebag. Any hardships you're going through are of your own design.

So, I can't fault someone for quirks in taste or preferences.

Would you see a movie with a single mother character in it?

At least you've explained your point rather clearly with the veneration aspect.

Sure, Erin Brockovich was a decent movie.
Other quirks which render a movie unwatchable for me include:

- Yuppy 90s romcoms (What Women Want, When Harry Met Sally, You've Got Mail etc.)
- Michael Bay action movies, aside from 'The Rock' and 'The Island'
- Anything with Adam Sandler in it, particularly the ones where he dresses in that same oversized shorts, t-shirt and baseball
  cap ensemble while having a GF/wife that's a 9 or a 10.
- Anything with Pauly Shore
