Definition of full vaccinated might include boosters.
« on: November 22, 2021, 11:01:58 am »

A lot of you guys aren't even fully vaccinated, yet you are asking others if they are vaccinated.  I know for a fact that go gators only had one pump and flk

Fauci says federal definition of 'fully vaccinated' is NOT changing to include boosters... for the moment: COVID death toll hits 771,013 - with fatalities this year DOUBLE that of 2020

Definition of full vaccinated might include boosters.

Well, I mean, it makes sense.
When people ask if you've been vaccinated against the Influenza A virus, they're usually referring to boosters. Various strains mutate slightly every year, requiring a slightly altered vaccine to effectively provide antigens for the current flu strain.
Covid, while mutating at a slightly slower rate than the flu, will probably end up being similar, requiring vulnerable demographics to take booster shots every year or 2 to deal with the new variants.  :undecided:

Maybe after your 27th booster, you'll be safe and they'll quit moving the goalposts?

Like the influenza booster shots, I seriously doubt that the covid ones will be mandatory except for very specific work-related cases.
This is after we return to "normal", of course. They'll probably be mandatory for travel etc for the short term.

Neither have I. Probably because we haven't worked at jobs that required it.
Usually those jobs that require it are things like ICU nurses, retirement home workers etc.

They have no effect anyways, but I never catch a cold anyways.  Allergies perhaps sometimes, but no real cold.

Nah mate, that's demonstrably false.

There is a substantial variation in effectiveness depending on a multitude of factors (strain matching, but on average, those who have had flu shots are between 40 and 60 percent less likely to catch influenza for that particular flu season.

This is based on *oodles* of very well documented stats.
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/vaccines-work/vaccineeffect.htm

Also, just fyi, the flu and the common cold are *completely* different diseases. A flu shot has no effect on one's susceptibility to the cold virus.
Allergies are an auto-immune response not related to viruses at all (usually).

The flu shots are geared towards the flu, not a cold.  What would never catching a cold have to do with whether or not you get a flu shot?

I never saw my dad get sick once.
My best friend too.
I never quite got why some people never get a cold or the flu.
I suspect they did but their immune systen kicked its *** and no symptoms manifested.
But this explanation amounts to no diff.
They basically didn't get sick.

My friend eats vegetables and still gets sick.

My buddy only listens to disco music. So there has never been any reason for him to get a flu shot.

Healthy people never get sick.

How to be healthy: Exercise every day. Eat healthy food. Get enough sleep.

When I ate crap food and never exercised I got sick. Now I don’t.

How much agency a person has over their health and thus immune system is really understated.

Re: the booster shot

Antibodies can be measured.

Since large populations are vaccinated, we can measure how much protection wanes over time.

UAE is requiring a 3rd shot of after 6 months for people who got Sinovax. This is based on data that we didn’t have a year ago. Other countries are making similar recommendations (or requirements depending on local politics) as the data comes in.

I get a tetanus booster every ten years.

My dogs get a rabies shot every 1-3 years depending on the formulation and local laws.

This isn’t new!

The flu shot is a little different. It is formulated based on a “best guess” about which strains will be the biggest threat. This makes it less effective some years.

I'm getting my booster shot this morning. I was holding off in the mistaken idea that I'd be taking a shot away from someone in a poor country.

I'm getting it due to the evidence that the protection wanes and because it appears the US may be in for another surge.

By definition?

If they get sick they are reclassified to “unhealthy”.

My dad chain smoked for 60+ years (never saw him sit through a movie without smoking or "going to the toilet" in a theater. The only cough he had was a dry cough. The flu and colds have ravaged my family but never him. Not a single runny nose. Oh, and he ate salami, cow's brains and guzzled half & half dairy.

The only explanations:

1. What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.

2. Some people are luckily born with an innate strong constitution (not inherited: he was the oldest son with 11, yes 11 siblings preWWII. His older sister died of a childhood illness, he outlived all but two of the all younger siblings).

I just can't believe that health should be judged based on morality, on decision making, on healthy choices and the other hogwash sold by gov'ts and corps.

Health can be helped by wise choices, but don't judge any individual based on their health. The reason for health vs. illness may have SQUAT to do with life decisions.

The shaky science pimped as gospel these days is incredible. Incredible!

Take precautions. But don't be surprised by "breakthrough" infections. There is A LOT we don't know about what is going on. Hindsight may be 20/20 but we are glaring through the windshield without corrective lenses, trying to stay on the road!

Honor Black athletes
If you watched the Georgia-Tennessee game on Nov. 13, in one of the commercial breaks, they highlighted large bronze statues of the first Black football players at the University of Tennessee and the first Black athlete in the Southeastern Conference. These statues are positioned around Neyland Stadium on UT's campus. I was pleasantly surprised to learn of the honors given to these trailblazing athletes.

After viewing and listening about these pioneers, I reflected on our own flagship university. Many questions came to my mind. Being a person of color myself, I asked myself, have there been Black athletes at UF worthy of a statue? Sure, of course — L. George, D. Gaffney, W. Jackson, E. Smith ... then why not UF (Pride of the Sunshine)?

Is this the gigantic elephant in the room or does this fall under the umbrella of "critical race theory?"

Encouraged to harass
The writer of a Nov. 15 letter, “New low” is upset that state Sen. Tina Polsky, who has breast cancer, is receiving death threats because she asked Florida’s surgeon general to wear a mask in a meeting and rightfully so. The question was posed, “What have we come to?”

Let me say it loud and be very clear: This is America's present and future! It’s happening all over the country. If Donald Trump/Ron DeSantis Republicans take over local school boards, on up to the House and Senate in Congress and the White House, we will see this on an even grander scale. These people are emboldened with urging from far-right radio and talk show platforms as well as Fox News. They’ve even taken marching orders from Steve Bannon.

They have been encouraged by others to harass by phone and in person and intimidate anyone who has not drunk the Kool-Aid of Trumpism. America’s democratic republic hangs by a thread.

DeBorah Denson McCray, Gainesville

No exceptions
A Nov. 15 letter, “Apply to all,” is right. Whether you work or receive public assistance, COVID vaccinations should be mandatory. There should be no exceptions, absent a legitimate medical reason. This ain’t some flu or a seasonal cold. It’s a deadly killer that is easily transmitted and mutates, if ignored.

We have mandatory vaccination requirements for children, that have virtually eradicated diseases like polio, measles, mumps, rubella, Hep B, diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis. So, what’s the fuss?

If we adopt a public policy of “your body, your choice,” we risk death and lasting illness for millions. If we choose mandatory vaccinations, we virtually assure a return to normalcy, save billions and provide for the health, safety and welfare of everyone. Do you need time to think about it?

Stuart Floyd, Gainesville

Dead can’t get benefits
A Nov. 15 letter asked said if Americans are going to lose other benefits if they’re not vaccinated. The short answer: Just ask the 750,000 American people who perished during this pandemic (over 90% not vaccinated). Yes, you lose your welfare, food stamps, jobs — because you are dead.

People say they don’t want foreign medicine in their bodies, but they smoke, drink and ingest other things daily without a second thought.

I’ve traveled overseas for years and got many inoculations and/or shots for safe travel. Why aren’t politicians working for Americans, not just their parties? If you don’t get vaccinated, I will say a short prayer at your cemetery ceremony."

Cold maybe, but to the point.
