Why aren't you teaching on Jeju Island?
« on: November 21, 2022, 03:48:10 am »
I spent 7 years on Jeju and wholeheartedly recommend you go there.

I like shopping in Seoul but a subway in any country is like a hellscape (Chicago & Vancouver skytrain wannabe better).

This is ain't holidaying talk; why not live there?

I guess people don't appreciate beaches, mountain scenery, (gawd how do i fit the warm, windy countless days into this), a population who do NOT look sidewards at foreigners (as more than half of all people on Jeju at any point aren't Korean - at least that was a fact pre-COVID; now who knows).
Life's to live! Live! Breathe. Relax. Enjoy. Animals teach us to focus on family, friends and avoid danger. Get what you need and get along with others. That said, some rock the boat, but they know capsizin' it means they're sunk. Some sink, let's swim! The sea's big, great, but has undercurrents.

I've been here since 1996 and have never been to Jeju-Do.

If I had the time and money I go to Thailand. Sorry, there is
no comparison.

As for living there, no way. Seoul is the cultural and cosmopolitan
centre of Korea. Always has been, always will be. Also, if I want
to travel out of Korea I would have to travel from Jeju-Do to Incheon
airport first. No thanks.

Jeju is beautiful, but the reason we don't all live there is because there are a very limited number of jobs available for esl teachers.
Also, the cost of living is also significantly higher there due to it being such a popular tourist destination.

As for Seoul, in my opinion it's probably the least attractive place to live in Korea. The pay is low, the cost of living is outrageously high, and there's nothing there that any second-tier city can't offer. It's a cookie-cutter urban conglomeration just like any other: a soulless, crowded, dirty, concrete wasteland.
I would much rather work on Ulleungdo than in the Seoul area.

Korea is so small that one place is pretty much the same as another. A drab, boring
mono culture with few redeeming qualities.

Yes, I have been here too long.

People find what they look for, I guess.
We make a point of going out for weekend road trips to visit places that we discover during the week (online, from friends etc). Lots of neat rural destinations in our area, close as we are to the old cultural capital of Gyeong-ju.

Jeju is okay, best oranges I’ve had, black pork was good, but man it’s out the boonies. The wife doesn’t want to go back for vacation, cause too much hassle to get there. Maybe for retirement I’d move there. But Seoul is where the action and connections are, food options, flights, and the people are more sophisticated and better with foreigners.

Unless you have hobbies. I can gig in or around seoul every weekend if i feel like it. How many gigs am i gonna be able to play, as a metal drummer, in Jinju or wherever? Zero? Then how would we move merch?

The same probably applies to dozens of other hobbies.
Does your wife submit to you?

I live in Jeju now. I have a wife and daughter. I think it could be better here as a single person. It depends where you live. Winter here can be so so. The warmer months can be great. We used to live near the beach and went swimming often. Now we live near a city beach. The nature here is good and you can always find a nice walk or a good museum.  Some things are expensive here but if you know where to shop and take advantage of specials it can be ok. If you don't live in the city then the lack of conveniences are noticeable. Lot's of driving long distances and hard to find somewhere to eat. Restaurants will randomly close when they feel like it quite often. But again it depends what your job is and where you live. I could write so much more about it. My summary is that it can be quite good here if you really take advantage of what Jeju has to offer.  You have to be proactive in that regard. I have known people here that have been quite bored and others that really like it.  I am happy enough here. Can't complain - I just came back from an early morning beach walk near my house.

Ha Ha, I used to play jazz gigs in Seoul once or twice a week in a Jazz club. I am a drummer too. Now I'm in Jeju I rarely play but I am also not pursuing it much. I keep getting asked to jam and play gigs here.

As of 2022, Jeju is 97% Korean citizen, which means slightly fewer foreigners per capita than the national average. Also, the most likely foreigner in South Korea is a Chinese citizen from the North Korean border region who looks and sounds Korean - completely fluent.

Jeju is nice to visit but I wouldn't care to live there. Maybe if I was single and the salary/hours were better.

There are some decent subway systems in the world. San Francisco BART is pretty bad, but the Vancouver Skytrain is passable, with the bonus that you can sit in the front seat and pretend you're the driver. Some of the lines in Shanghai have that too, but they're all underground so there's not much to look at. Lines 16 and 17 are pretty great; nice countryside views.

Oh, absolutely. Things like this are super subjective.
My particular hobbies are all easily done out in the boonies for the most part, and a weekend visit to Daegu is more than sufficient to get my fix of city life.

For the same reason why not everyone drives a Korando.
For the same reason why out of near 52 million people in this country, less than 700.000 chose to live there.

By beaches do you mean those tiny bits of sand where you can't swim past the ropes?

A better question would be why not live in Portugal or Spain or Panama or dare I say Florida?

i never did get to jeju. one of my korea regrets.

i remember a girl in my EPIK intake. she started the week very excitedly saying she had been placed in jeju. on the last day, when we were packing to leave for our respective cities, i remember overhearing her say “you better come visit me!” in a shaky voice to some other people. i saw her on facebook, loving the beaches, once or twice.

Who does the recruiting for Jeju?  Tried to find some public school recruiters recently just out of curiosity but can't find anything?  Or at least got no reply from a couple of recruiters asking them if they did it.  (Internet mentioned them as recruiters for public schools in Jeju.)  I doubt I would move.  If I moved, it would be out of Korea most likely.  Either teaching in another country or switching to blue collar work in Alberta for good money.  One or the other I suppose soon.
745sticky, Augustiner, Bakeacake, D.L.Orean, Lazio, Mithras, Renma, Rye are still blocked and I can't see them.

Jeju is nice and all because it's not the mainland. But it's way overrated, too touristy and too expensive.

Ding Ding Ding.

I liked my 4 days there 10 years ago, but I have never pined to go back. If I'm gonna go through the prep of FLYING I'll just spend more and go to Japan, Taipei or Shanghai.

One of the recruiters has advertised on here for years. I'm pretty sure people have told you who in the past, and I'm also fairly sure that you once responded to his post  :undecided:
