Hi everyone, here's a lesson that I used the week after I taught the "WHO would you save?" shipwreck scenario lesson (Found here: http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,1769.msg5829.html#msg5829). This lesson is a "WHAT would you save?" scenario, but this time the students select their items randomly and decided together with a partner what they would do with the items.

The instructions are as follows:

First, put the students in pairs. You can of course put them in larger groups, but I find, the bigger the group, the more room there is for one person in the group to do most of the work.

On the 2nd slide of the PPT, the pairs are to chose 5 of the squares (Ex A1, A2, C1,C2, E1). Make sure that each pair has chosen their 5 squares before continuing further.

Then continue with the PPT. Slides 3-24 explain to the students why they are on a deserted island, what is on the island, as well as the 18 items that were on board their sinking sailboat.

Slide 25 explains to the students that of all the 18 items on their sinking boat, only 5 items washed up on shore on their island. And slide 26 explains to them that the 5 squares they chose earlier will be the five items that they will have to use on their island.

The students kind of understand at this point, but when slide 27 comes up, they fully understand what is going on. This is the point where the excitement level rises in classroom, and they really get into this lesson plan. I would give them about 3 minutes to see what 5 items they get, as well as they like to discuss with their other friends what their funny choices are.

There's a worksheet where the students write how they will use their randomly selected 5 items. Next, on the bottom of the worksheet, students are allowed to choose any 5 items that they think are the most useful.

After this, if there's time, I made a Survival Typhoon PPT. The game has different survival trivia.

That's a fantastic lesson! The ppt and typhoon game look brilliant. Just wondering... how do you tend to select players for the typhoon game?

This is a pretty cool looking activity. Aside from inventions, I think this is one of the best activities I've seen so far. I guess I like topics that involve imagination and creativity.

The students at my school are mostly lower level so I might need to change the instructions from long sentences to short ones.

I really liked this lesson! I changed it a little to fit my class-- they needed a little more direction about how to use their objects for survival and I changed some of the items to be a bit more random, and use more creativity!
I made some of them share their answers, and it took almost the full 45 minutes. Then for the last 5 or so minutes - whatever you have left- I explained that Gilligan's Island is a similar theme and we watched a bit of the show. You can find some episodes at www.projectfree.tv

Used this today with a class that is usually impossible to motivate. Either it was this stunningly beautiful fall weather or the awesomeness of this lesson (or some combination thereof) but this went over very, very well. Thanks for positing!

Dont know about you guys but the typhoon game seems very difficult for my middle schoolers even for the 9th graders (3rd graders)...

Noone gave the vocabulary on how to use the items?

Also, I changed the gun to a spear gun. Don't want students getting ideas to kill each other.

I added a First Aid Kit to the mix.
