(YBM) Grade 6, Lesson 11 - "This is My Blog"

I'll be reusing last years 5th grade video "Can you tell me about your family?" and "Can you tell me about Halloween?" if it's close enough to Halloween. For students who saw it last year, it can be used to review and reintroduce the "can you tell me about _____?" expression. Enjoy!

Starting at the speaking section (page 136), the book says, "It's hanbok."
I think "It's a hanbok." is more appropriate.
Can someone explain to me why there is no article? I need to explain to my kids why because i've been showing them pictures of different cultural clothes and telling them to say, "It's a ___" for all of them.  >:( :( :o

Hanbok is literally "Korean clothing/dress/attire," so it's not really a countable noun, and doesn't take an article...

Thanks for the reply! I found the same answer you did. I resorted to memorizing them. My kids copy me, so they're learning the right usage! winning! I literally had to look up every piece of cultural clothing I used in my lessons and double check it.
a sari, a beret, a kurta, kimono, hanbok, a pollera, etc.

Lesson Outline for Story Box:
1. review key sentences with ricola8's ppt
2. guessing game: Blindfold a volunteer student. have him/her touch an object and guess what it is! The class got to see what it was as the student touched it. Everyone wanted to try it!!! (I used a bar of 마이쮸 candy, rabbit cup, penguin pencil sharpener, alphabet letter magnets, soft die, rabbit headband.)
Then I taught them "blind man." (get it? the students were "blind")
3. Story Box
4. Annoying oranges game from dgales.
5. Show and Tell: I told students from day 2 that they could bring in things from different countries. they were rewarded with stickers! Simple show and tell: Class asks, "can you tell me about it?" Student answers, "Sure. It's _______. It's from _______." Advanced students could freely add to it.

Here a simple, quick PPT game (catch the sentence) I used as a warm up/review.  My CT and I try to do something like this at the beginning of class to get them motivated or to make sure they were paying attention during the lesson.  You can do as many of the slides as you want, depending on how much time you have.  If you use a positive reward/tally system, they really get into it especially if you're a stickler for details and perfection when they say the sentence from the lesson.

An intro ppt I made this week, and a 7 question Catch the sentence game (The animations on the one posted above weren't working right for me, so it's just an edit of that).

"This Is My Blog" Taboo game (from a template I found on a separate thread)! The first three are "I went to ______ last summer", the rest are "You look like ________." I used Halloween themed answers ("You look like a vampire" "You look like a zombie" "You look like the Hulk") to make it more fun. Add or subtract "taboo" words depending on the level. Enjoy!

We got our students to do a project for this lesson.

They had to research an aspect of Korean culture and make a ppt and presentation about it. Sounds really complicated but we simplified it A LOT i.e. we provided templates for the students to work with.

We had them randomly choose from this list:
  • famous people
    events/holidays
    food
    clothes
    games
    places/monuments
    house (things done, or are, in the house)
    music
    sports
    nature - animals
    and nature - plants

I also made up a research planning paper per topic. My co-t translated the English into Korean, but we kept both the Korean and English on the paper, because the students had to write in English using the patterns.

** Encourage the students to NOT use online translators. We told them online translators aren't reliable. A lot of the time, the sentences don't make sense in English when translated from Korean. We told them that they can make sentences with their current English levels. If they had questions or trouble, they could come ask us.

They had to research in their groups throughout the week. Then, instead of Storybox, they got to make their ppt. For the presentation, each person had to say at least one sentence.

Unfortunately, we didn't actually have time to do the presentations, but the students handed in their ppts and they were really good.

Here is a sleeping elephant game for this chapter.  For the uninitiated, students in teams of four unscramble key sentences from the chapter and race to write them on their whiteboard before time is called.   They must work together, as each "elephant" receives only a small segment of the sentence.  Since this game encourages competition and grammatical exactitude, it has limited value IMO, but is fun once in a while. REMOVED

For Lesson 6 "This is My Blog" I decided to have an "easy day" for one of my classes.  We went over textbook material for the first 15-20 minutes, then I played a cartoon clip from a Samurai Jack episode.  It is Episode 11 where Jack meets a Scotsman on a bridge and they end up dueling.  The kids liked it.  Hand out the accompanying worksheet and go over the questions before and after the clip.  The episodes can be found online, for example:

Begin the clip at 5:14 and watch until 14:25

Using the textbook activity and target language, here is a "Create your blog" set of worksheets. The students have to tell the foreign teacher about their Chuseok, describing where they went and what they did using pictures and the target language e.g. "I went to ________ last Chuseok" / "This is hanbok. People wore them in the old days." etc.

Includes a list of vocabulary and an example blog page for them to work with.  :azn:
