Last year's lesson on "What a ___" (exclamations/adjectives):

http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,1194

(Old Lesson 4 - What a Nice Day!)

Our lesson this year also includes describing tourist attractions, which kind of ties into the Old Lesson 5 "Where is Gyeongbokgung?" except that we already covered directions in our lesson 6 this year...

New language:
Do you know (about) ____?
It's a famous ___ in Korea.

I didnt like anything i found, so i made a running dictation. you can make it easier or harder depending on your students. my students are pretty good, so i gave them a little extra.

running dictation works like this:
the first student reads the first sentence and goes to the first student and whispers the first sentence. now that i think about it, it's more like telephone... anyway. the students are all lined up and whisper the message down the line. when it reaches the end, the last student will write the sentence somewhere. I will have everyone working at the same time.
when time runs out or they finish, you can check the answers. fastest time and the most correct answers wins.

it is the same 20 questions on all 4 pages, but shuffled around a bit. this was done to keep groups from cheating. i hope to see this game evolve or upgraded in future lessons!

For Period 1 or 2:

Here's a simpler version of Blazing Pens than the one a few posts up... this one only has vocabulary words. Can be used to review new words at the end of 11-1 or 2.

Here's my game for Day 1 (or 2).

Word Lotto!

Ss write 3 words from a choice of 9.  Then reveal the winning words.  Award points based on how many correct words they picked.  After the first 6 rounds, they must write 3 sentences and get double points.

Takes 10+ minutes if you only do the first 6 rounds, or up to 20 minutes if you do sentences, too (up to round 10).  (You can stretch it out longer by making them read the words/sentences as a class before revealing the winners.)

Many of my students didn't bring their notebooks, so I had them write on the final page of the book, which has a big picture of Parliament and Big Ben.

Hey folks,

Wanted to post something that we're gonna do in addition to the "Story Land" feature in Chapter 11.  The story day is always a snooze, and as much as I try to come up with some role plays and activities my students might get into, they're a little wild for anything too organized.

So I decided to make a "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" kind of game--2 students will come to the "stage" area we have in front of our room, using stickers as the incetive.  I'll elicit roles (characters, celebrities, superheroes, anything) for each performer from the students in the "audience."  I'll also elicit some emotions or other characteristics (Psy with a broken leg, Superman looking for his girlfriend, etc.), and have the students start a free, small dialogue.  The only catch is that I'll keep changing the background (aka the pictures on the attached PPT).  They're all about buildings, palaces, towers, etc. (things from THIS lesson) and people (from the previous lesson, 10)--students will have to talk and pay attention to the changing backgrounds, making sentences like "What a ______ __________!" (What a handsome guy, What a tall tower, etc.).  After about 5 slides between the 2 students, we'll clap for them and bring up 2 more volunteers.  Hopefully this is a fun but not too organized way to get them focused and having some fun.

You'll want to just change a few slides around, as I put a slide of my school and of myself at the beginning and end.  Hope this will work as an idea for someone at the very least!

Day 2 ppts

Grammar PPT [What a(n) adj + noun!].  Made from about 3 different ppts from last year.  Only includes the "What a..." target sentence, since I focused on the others on day 1.

What a... Hidden Picture Game.  A new one I put together, since I wasn't happy with any of the old ones I found.  Includes the numbered boxes so you can let students choose, or draw random numbers to make it more interesting.

Half - decent Hot Potato game I made for the reading section, the kids loved it.

Basically split into 2 groups or teachers vs. students. One student stands up and reads the 1st word, another stands and reads the second word etc.. until they reach the end.

If two students stand or speak the word at the same time, they are out and the class loses one life. They only have 3 lives and if they can't complete the sentence they don't get a point (or teachers get one if it's a group warm-up). There's green, yellow and red traffic lights in the corner of the PPT. Press them in sequence and it indicates they lost a life!

I also included a practice PPT before the game that you can omit at your discretion, I only included it to encourage the weaker ones. I recommend facing off 2 groups against one another as it's pretty intense, but another class enjoyed it as a group warm-up too so it's maleable enough I think.

One more thing, almost all sentences are lifted from the books reading section, and a sparse few from other similar sources (such as look and listen) So I really hope you find this useful!

For this lesson, we discussed Lesson 10 as well since we did personal descriptions (adjectives) in that lesson.'

The PPT was lesson intro and we did a lot of discussion on adjectives and positive and negatives with that. My CT did some translations in Korean and then we got the Ss talking about positive and negative adjectives. This can get a bit wild!

After we listened to "What A Wonderful World" and they did a worksheet. After we pointed out some adjectives they found in the song and played a game.

Hope this helps someone!
