Go Fish Game! - Grade 4 L4: Don't Run! (Cheonjae 천재 by Ujin Jun)
« Reply #1 on: March 28, 2014, 02:16:50 PM »
Go fish cards for Lesson 4 Vocabulary.

In case you don't know the rules:
1) Kids glue the front and the back side together and then cut them out (usually takes about 10 minutes)
2) Kids get into groups and shuffle their cards together (3-5 people)
3) Everyone grabs 5 cards
4) They play rock, scissors, paper to see who goes first
5) The player picks one person and asks 'Do you have ______?'
6) The person being asked will either say: 'Yes, I do - Here you are' and gives their card to the other player for 1 point- OR, If they don't have the card - 'No, I don't. Go fish!' and then the asker has to draw a card.
7) When a kid runs out of all of his/her cards, they will draw one more from the deck and keep playing.
8) When all of the cards are gone, you stop the game and count up the points.

Enjoy!

Grade 4 L4: Don't Run! - Intro PPT and Bingo Game / Sleeping Elephants
« Reply #2 on: April 04, 2014, 02:28:08 PM »
Hello!

I made an intro PPT for the vocabulary and key expressions for this lesson.  There is a Bingo game after the introduction.

I've attached the Bingo cards. There are 6 different variations of the cards.  When someone get's two bingo rows, click the dancing green blob in the top right corner and it will take you to the 'You've Won!' slide.  I give my kids stickers but you could change it to anything you want!

I've also attached a Sleeping Elephants game.  I'm not sure who made the template originally so thanks to them! I just changed the key expressions.  Here's the description from where I got the template: Students need to be in groups of four.  Each student has a number, 1, 2, 3 or 4.  Each round starts with everyone putting their heads down.  The teacher says, "Elephant 1, wake up!" and all of the kids in position one look at the first word on the PPT.  Then the teacher says, "Elephant 1, go to sleep." Game continues until each team member has seen one word.  Afterward, they work with their team to write a sentence on a mini-whiteboard.  If they get it correct, they get one point for the team.

Enjoy!

Modified Lesson 4 PPT- thanks to the original one! A new game I'm going to try out..

SS line up in two lines (maybe boys vs girls?) and have to sit down in the lines. Front person will run to me and my co and we will whisper the sentence to them and SS will whisper the sentence to the back of the line. Back person then runs to the front and collects the correct sentence/word from the Velcro- green board and runs and sticks it on their teams green board. The team with the most words/ sentences stuck on their teams boards will win. SS change their order- back person goes to the front after they are done their turn.

Quickly edited two games other waygookers made for a different book because I was just told I needed them for later this week, so please let me know if there are any issues. I'm not using them until Thursday so I might have to edit and reupload them after that if I notice anything during class.

The mario game was adapted from heffneh. The other bomb game was adapted from tchr227.

Here is a hidden pic and matching game.  I added in "don't ___" and "please ___" as notated by a big red circle.  Someone else on waygook made this for another lesson and i just swapped the pics

hope it helps!

Grade 4 L4: Don't Run! - Writing PPT Game!
« Reply #9 on: April 21, 2014, 10:16:00 AM »
Here's a game called 'Let's Write' that is, in reality, much more fun for the kids than it sounds. It's writing practice for chapters 1-4.

Every kid gets a mini whiteboard and marker (either laminate some paper or have the kids use normal paper if you don't have these things).  Then they choose one of the 4 sentences/words/letters from the PPT to write on their paper.

Once everyone is finished, they will hold up their boards.  When you click the mouse, a word will disappear and those kids will put their boards down. The last word left on the PPT is the winning word and the kids with their boards still up will get one point each for their team. (with my smaller class of 5, there were no teams)

At the end of the game, add up the points and declare a winner.  The kids have gone crazy for this... and I got them to write for 20 minutes!

Thanks to the original poster of this game! I think I'm going to use it for the writing portion of every lesson!

Enjoy!

Key sentences GIFs
« Reply #12 on: April 22, 2014, 01:24:50 PM »
GIFs of key sentences - Don't run/eat/touch it/swim. It has 34 slides and can be split into two different periods for review.

I usually ask students to look at the picture and raise their hands to make a sentence.  Then, everyone will read the sentence together.

I have an idea for the game in Period 2 using the cards in their textbook on page 27.

Get the students in groups--about 4-6 students per group.
The students take out all the cards and for the ones that don't have the red warning circle, they draw the warning circle with a red crayon so that all the cards look the same.

After they do this, they mix and shuffle all the cards up and take 4 cards each.  They put the rest of the cards in a pile face down in the middle of their team's desk.
Make sure you tell them they have to keep their cards a secret!

They play Go Fish using the expressions~
"Don't ____ here"  run, eat, etc.   (to get the matching card they want)

If they student has the card, they say: Oh, I'm sorry.    and gives them the matching card.

If the student doesn't have the card, they say: What?  Oh, okay.   Go fish!

They play this game until there are no cards left in the pile, etc.  Winner is the one with the most matching pairs.

It's really simple, right?   But it's no prep work and I still think it's a better game than the one in the textbook this time.

Also, try to get homeroom teachers to prepare the cards before class, as this saves about 5 mins of time.  And make sure you have enough red markers/crayons for the students to use ahead of time.

If you have any better ideas for this game, definitely let me know.  I'm just grasping at straws here trying to make it easy for me and better for them!

Here's a fun reading game I played with students today that requires limited preparation. Feel free to add suggestions to make the game better, this was the first time I've played this game. I used this game for 2nd period but make sure to review the key expressions many times before playing.

Speed Reading Race
Divide the students up into groups of 4-5 (depending on the class size bigger/smaller groups works ok)
Print out the sentences attached and with magnets or tape attach them to the whiteboard in a straight line.  Space out the sentences across the entire board if possible.
Two teams battle at a time.
One team is on the left side of the line, one team is on the right side.
When you say go the students read the sentence until they meet in the middle.
Then they do rock paper scissors.
The team that won the rock paper scissors game continues to read from the sentence where they met last time.
The losing team must read the sentences again from the beginning.
To win the game one team must win rock paper scissors enough times to make it all the way to the other side of the board.

--> After rock paper scissors I had the student switch so that the reading student is now at the end of the line and the next student starts reading where the previous student left off (if they won rock paper scissors) or from the beginning (if they lost)

The students loved the game and it could easily be stretched to fill 15 mins.

Before we started I reviewed the key concepts with a PPT modified from hellojello who provided the gifs (thank you!).

Reading game called, "Where's a star?"... Would be best suited for period three or four. Students are divided into 3~4 teams.  There are ten sentences on the screen.  Team one says one sentence, and the teacher will click the sentence to reveal whether they found a star or not.  Each team has three chances to find stars, and then it is the next team's turn. After several rounds, the team with the most stars, wins.

Note: There are two stars per slide, one in each column.  Once both stars are found click the right arrow to move to the next slide.  The kids really love this game, and get pretty competitive with it.
