« on: May 21, 2014, 03:26:00 PM »
Here are a few of my materials that I have so far for this lesson.

The powerpoint I created and the Monsters Inc game I just tweaked.
Also two good warm up songs.

EDIT:

Added vocab sheet.
Removed monsters game, Sly's is better.   ;D

Spy card game. I put how to play in it but you can modify it or make up your own rules.

I put it in PDF so you don't lose the font.

but if you download the Avengers font you can edit the PPT.

The last two pages/slides are the back of the cards. You can print this double sided (양면 in Korean) and they will match up and be easy to coat/laminate.

Couple of items I've made.

The multi-game is just two quick ppt review games. One is guess the picture as the tiles disappear and the other is guess (in teams) which picture will remain.

The totoro board game. Simple board game.
A powerpoint review of the key expressions using "Do you like broccoli ice cream" song as a guide.

BTW, small issue but before using the Monster's Inc game, it has one slide that you guess "I like milk" and were given a picture of a spiraled ham plus one that's "I like chicken" and it shows a picture of some guy and no chicken.

Sly,

Thanks, I'll fix and update the file here.

Here is a changed version I made; there were a couple other problematic slides: gimchi picture was tomatoes and spinach and a couple of the pictures would be too obtuse for my kids to figure out what they meant (like having a "soy happy together" pic indicating you like corn).

I've included a simple Pirate Game, Pass the Ball, and Mario game for this lesson.

Thanks to the creators of the original templates!

I haven't made any materials for this chapter yet, but does it bother anyone else that the book goes from learning ABC's to reading words like "chicken" and "potato"? >_> Seems like a huge leap to me. Whatever happened to three-letter words?

My students love Heads Up 7 Up.
You can easily use this game by choosing 5-7 students (5 works better in my classes) and giving each of them a food item. Or if they're advanced any item or animal.
When the class puts their heads down have the chosen few go around and hand out the picture cards and tap the thumbs (or even better put the picture under the thumb to make the student hold it).
Once you say Heads Up 7 Up (or heads up stand up), the students who were picked ask one of the chosen students, "Do you like _____?"
If it's the correct choice then he or she says, "Yes, I like _____." And if it is a wrong choice, "No, I don't like _____."
If you're unfamiliar with this game, here is a power point for another lesson. Just change the dialogue.

Good Pokeman game whoever posted it.   I spent a few minutes filling it in with some pictures.  My miniscule contribution.  Pokeman Telepathy game with some pictures for vocab and simple sentences in it.

^^^^^Pokemon Telepathy Game is one of my concoctions

Here's a PPT to practice reading the six target words. For potato and corn, the words are broken up into managable chunks. For milk and juice, students can hold up one or two fingers to vote for which letter they think comes next. For cookie and chicken, students should decide which is the correct word by looking at the letters. And the last three slides encourage students to look at the first letter of the word to guess what it is if they can't read the whole thing.

This was my attempt to help (my very low level) students who have never read before make their first steps with these arguably difficult words. Hope it helps.

I also think it's absolutely ridiculous that the book jumps from teaching the alphabet in the first semester to teaching full-on words in the second semester. I was really concerned because a lot of my students are lower level but, I managed to make a PPT that breaks down the words and then some. In the previous semester, I had already taught my kids phonics (the sound each letter makes). So this semester, I'll be concentrating on the sounds certain letters make when combined, i.e. 'ch' 'ui' 'oo' 'ck' The last few slides you'll see are only the 'ch' 'ui' 'oo' 'ck' phonemes on their own. The kids are meant to say the sounds as it's shown to review whether they remember the new sounds they learned.
Also, some of the kids were wondering why the 'c' in 'juice' did not sound like 'k' so I wrote on the board that: C + E = S
When you see 'C' and 'E' together it makes the 'ssss' sound.
Look, I'm trying my best here. I've never formally taught children how to read but, I'm really trying my best to make it easy and comprehensible for my lower level students.

I've also attached the intro PPT I made for the beginning of this lesson. It's Cookie Monster themed!! lol The kids loved it ^^

I think this would work best as a wrap up.

1. Do you like ~?
2. What's missing? (using the 6 food items)
3. I like/don't like ~ (using pictures of rotten food to elicit "I don't like ~)

Another video :) This one is always a hit with students, regardless of their level or grade.

Do you like apples?

"Do you like ________?-cheese-cookies-kimchi-pizza-sandwiches-kimbap-eggs-milk-lamp-ketchup-cheeseburgers-apples-spaghetti/Yes, I do./No, I don't. I like grapes."

This reading PPT is really great! Seriously. I'm going to use it for period 4. I didn't teach my kids phonics other than what's in the book (I really should though), but they actually did better at reading the words than I thought. At least they're good at looking at the first letter of the word or the length of it to guess what it is. This PPT will help them actually try to read all the letters though :) Thanks

(Also, I've showed them Alphablocks too and think they're really awesome )

This is a variation of twisting words.  I'll ask the kids to spell the words in the air after they identify the wordand say the key expression.

I think this would be best as a review.

I mislabeled the numbers on the slide, so you should change that.  Eeeeek.

Review Lesson 7:
Short Role Play - Hansel & Gretel

I'm not sure where my co-teacher got these materials, but I can't
take credit for it.

Enjoy!!
