Here's a lesson for the intro...we're jumping into the lesson early so I'm highlighting the difference between the future (reviewing lesson 7) and the past (lesson 8)

This ppt introduces new vocab words and expressions, then uses the expressions from lesson 7 to show how they would change using past tense. At the end of the lesson I'll play the book on head game (if you havent played its awesome, here's what I did:
  • write several expressions on the board (4 using "I will ____" 4 using "I did/I went/ I joined/etc"
  • choose 3 students to stand in the back of the room, balancing their book on their head
  • Ask them a question that would require a past or future response ("What did you do last weekend?" or "What will you do next weekend" etc)
  • the students must balance the books on their heads while they race to the board to touch the correct response
  • naturally, winner gets a sticker. or an imaginary point. up to you
My kids LOVE this game, and it's really funny to watch as well. Pretty educational too, as it incorporates listening, reading, and speaking (make the kids answer when they touch the expression, make the class repeat)

ENJOY

I made this summer vacation worksheet where they draw and write simple sentences about their summer, didn't know it matched this lesson so well - as I prepared it for a simple first day back class.

Hope it helps: http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2015/08/back-to-lifeback-to-reality-summer.html

I also made this word quiz game with PPT that you can download for free - good for a later part of the lesson. I did it for part 2. http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2015/08/word-quiz-lesson-8-how-was-your-weekend.html

I also did the project in the textbook but we made our newspaper actually look like one. The textbook example is cute but boring. So here's our end product, and more pics: http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2015/10/grade-5-class-newspaper-how-was-your.html

Ninja Attack reading game attached. I got it from another thread and changed it to this lesson. Thank you so much to original poster.

Happy teaching!

Hello,

References: How was your vacation? Past tense.

Someone posted a dominoes game on here a while back. I have used it for afterschool for both grade 2s and grade 6s and it works well. Rather than having them play against each other individually, it works better if you have teams of 3 or 4 trying to complete the 'snake' together against other teams. When I played it traditionally they just ended up helping each other anyway. I added the instructions on to the end of Bwards intro (thank you that by the way).

Regards,

Ian

Thank you bward85 for your great game idea. I think my students will really enjoy it.

I made a supplemental PPT to go with it. I'll start by showing one slide and asking the class for the past and future forms before clicking to show the correct sentence on the slide. Only then after my students know and practice the two options will I ask the three students in the back either "How was your vacation?" / "What will you do?" and just have them race to touch either the left (past) side of the board or the right side (future). Once the game progresses I'm hoping they won't need the sentence reveal prior to racing but will be able to form the correct answer based on the picture.

Cowboy turn around race game.

There are two teams. One person from each team steps forward. Make them face away from the board and then they turn around when they hear the gun shot. First player to say the key expression wins the point.

Adapted from a version I found in another 5th grade book, Thanks to the template maker and Natz.

Thank you IanTedstone and other contributors for the dominoes game!

I changed up the cards to match the pictures and phrases from this chapter as well as made them smaller to avoid any risk of them running out of desk space to play and thus whining to me lol. I'm thinking I'll laminate and cut a set for each group of 4. They'll really enjoy it. Thanks again!

Hello
I would like to be wrong here but I think they have used the wrong rode/rowed for this chapter.

I rode a boat sounded strange to me and I thought of a more natural way of saying it - 'I rode in a boat' or 'I went in a boat'.  then I looked at the visuals on the CD and the picture is of people 'rowing' a boat.

'I rode a boat' and the picture is of 'rowing' a boat.

Maybe it is an American way of spelling it?? but I can't find anything saying to spell it that way on the internet (it was a fairly quick search as I don't have that much time).

I've shown my co-teacher three ways of spelling that sound (road/rowed/rode) and how the meanings are different.  Hopefully I am not wrong!

Thanks

Comic Outline (Simple Writing Activity)

It's a skeletal comic where the students can draw a picture and write a sentence about somewhere they went, someone they visited, something they played, something they bought and something they ate during their holidays. The attached PPT reviews/introduces the five past tense verbs so they can get started right away. Expect some students to know the word 'met' instead of 'visited' (or the more natural 'met up with'); the choice of vocab changed between the 4th and 5th grade texts. Similarly, 'ate' and 'bought' aren't in the textbooks but some kids will know them.

If you wan't to change any of the tracing bits to adapt it to another level, I've included the editable comic as a PPT too. We'll probably end up using this with the 6th graders too as a review activity.

Jennifer, it did sound unnatural to me as well though I don't believe it's technically wrong. I think better would be "I took a boat to..." or as indicated in the picture with the paddles "rowed".

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a reading/writing game. Print out slide 23 and give a half-sheet to each student. I played this in groups of four. They would play rock, paper, scissors then the winner would select one of the sentences to write on their paper. The second winner picked a different sentence to write and so on until all 4 students had different sentences written. Then I slowly (to build up the suspense before the shrieks and squeals of joy/sadness, of course) revealed the point values for each sentence. The right-hand column on their papers are for points.

Jennifer, the book is correct but unnatural. As an American, I wouldn't use "boat" in general. I would say sailed, paddled, canoed, etc. Or even "took a boat to..." You can easily change it to "rode a bike" though. The other 5th grade book I have says "I saw a future car," and I refuse to teach anything as awkward sounding as "future car" or "future tv"

Telepathy games are a big hit with my 5th graders so I made a PPT with rounds containing two sentences for the students to choose from to write on their paper. One of the two sentences is something I actually did during my vacation time and they'll try to guess which is correct. Once the answer is revealed I included pictures from my trip. My kids always like real pictures from my life. Just an idea if any of you want to share your holiday time with your students   8)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paul thanks so much for the comic template and PPT. I've added an example slide at the end with translations and some ideas for what they could write. I'll have it up on the screen while they work. I have several low level students who otherwise would feel too intimidated and unsure of anything to write

Even more awkward is the question in the song for period 5. It asks "Did you ride a boat?" instead of the at least plausible "ride in a boat".

"Future car" sounds like dialogue from an unimaginative scifi:
"Future taxi take me to the spaceport"
"Okay, that'll be forty future bucks."

Kimchi elimination game. All students stand. First one reads the first word, next student the second word, and so on. After the last word on the slide is read the following student says "kimchi" then the student after has to sit and is out. Last student standing wins.
