Just a pirates of the classroom game.

Also, this thread doesn't seem to be linked correctly to the index thread.

2015 Grade 5 Daekyo 1 - 7. What Did You Do During Summer Vacation?
« Reply #2 on: July 21, 2015, 02:05:20 pm »
Period 1, I would begin with a short ppt on forming the past tense. After the textbook, I have scaffolded review with a pair of review games (missing picture and matching) gr5-07-1review.ppt. REMOVED
Period 2, a boys-vs-girls warmup, the fill-in conversation worksheet and a quiz game to review the new expressions of this chapter and also review of last semester using the summer pool party theme.  REMOVED
Period 3, a song, "Yesterday" by the Beatles with a fill-in worksheet that I found somewhere on watygook.  The other half of the worksheet is a word search.  The words given are present tense, they must write the past tense form and find it. Also for this period, a pass the ball game with sentences from the lesson.  REMOVED
Period 4: a fast-reading warm-up a bit like 'Baskin-Robbins". Each student reads a word as it appears, whoever gets the last word on the slide reads out the whole sentence. Main after text activity is a team writing game, Sleeping Dragons, an iteration of sleeping elephants I made for a Harry Potter themed class a while ago.  REMOVED
Period 5, I have an individual writing game involving rock-paper-scissors.  Instructions on the PPT. REMOVED
Period 6, both gr5-07-6warm.ppt REMOVED and gr5-07-6writing.ppt could be used as a warm-up, speaking or writing practice.  Also a board gameI found elsewhere for play in teams. REMOVED

Oops, I created and uploaded the wrong conversation fill-in above for period 2.  That is actually the dialogue from period 1--I won't delete it as it may be useful.  However, here is the correct fill-in worksheet. REMOVED

I edited a line bingo game to match the expressions in this book. There's a few extra from another book, but nothing above their level. Cut the strips to be vertical so all expressions are represented on each student's strip. (I've only ever seen this game played as a horizontal strip, so it took a minute to realize. ^^) Hope this is helpful for someone out there!

Survivor Standing game. My students like this. Adapted from someone else's work. 15 mins. Best for period 3 or later.
"Actually I don't know for sure how the OP played it. I've done it two different ways:
1) Play as individuals, not groups. When a student sits down they can't stand up again. Survivors win.
2) Play as groups. I let the student who answers choose the row or group of people that sits down. But, if there is someone in that group who is sitting, they stand up again.
Both work well. Number 2 is probably more fun but takes longer because of the deliberation about who to kill/rescue."

This is a fun "sentence search" activity that uses reading practice for lessons 1-7 and writing practice for mostly lesson 7. Can be a quick warm-up or take up the whole class time depending on your class's level.

The best part is you'll have complete silence in the classroom for about 10 minutes or so as students search through their books for the first part. Also, this activity even had the kids that don't like participating joining in.

Here's how it worked best with my (very low-level, rural school) class:

Greeting, and then taught two new words by drawing stick figures on the board before starting the activity.

On one side I drew a lone stick figure and on the other I drew two stick figures holding hands. I wrote "alone" and "together" underneath them and helped the kids sound out the words as a group. I then explained that for this worksheet, they would work "alone" and the winner gets an extra stamp (our school's motivator) or candy. This is also the only way I could get them to be quiet the whole time. If you do this kind of activity in teams, it's a loud one.

For the bonus round, my students have a hard time with writing and spelling. So, I have everyone close their books and I say the sentences and then go around and quickly check/correct sentences. Once everyone's done, I say "1,2,3, go!" and they can open their books and search.

I made a dice game that I used for period 3. I revamped a dice game template from a 4th grade  post on waygook. It's best if you print it out in color. Students play with a partner and first do RPS to see who goes first. Then they roll the dice and make a sentence as indicated.

My coteacher had them say the whole dialogue, as in the other player would ask the question, then they would respond as indicated in the example sentence. After the partner asks them 'How was it', they respond according to what number they rolled and either get +however many points, or minus 1 or 6 points. The student at the end with the most points is the winner. Happy teaching!

Here's a fun Harry Potter based past tense story. Ron and Harry exchange letters describing their summer vacations. Ron had a great vacation: he went to Korea, he played quidditch, and he went on a date with Hermione. Harry had a horrible summer. The Dursleys left him home alone while they went to France; he ate bug soup, got sick, and Voldemort tried to kill him. It's an easy read and can easily be modified if you would like to make it longer or more difficult.

Spy game for Lesson 7. Students must find the other students who have their cards. But, they have to watch out for the spy!

The cards template I borrowed from Travelinpantsgirl in another thread. The Daria-themed instruction powerpoint is my creation. You will need to download Grobold if you want it to look right:

 http://www.dafont.com/grobold.font

The first slide uses avengers font but you can change any of the fonts to something else that looks good of course.

Just for fun, I used a picture of my classroom in the ppt, you might want to switch it with your own because the students get a kick out of it.

Reading Lucky Wheel Game. You could also make it a reading/writing game and have the students write their answers on a white board.

Half of my G5 classes will be absent for a field trip this week so I'm only teaching 3 classes. To fill time without going forward in our textbook, I made a madlib role play for lesson 7.
Students get into groups of 3, decide who is who then put their story together so it makes sense.
Hopes this helps someone out.

Some quick materials for a game of "2 truths and 1 lie" about past activities:

- (Very basic) PPT walkthrough adapted from here: http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,100149.0.html
- (Also basic) printable PPT handout with a brainstorm page and a writing page.

I set the minimum at 2 truths and 1 lie, but allowed early finishers to write an extra lie and truth.  We have a small class so everyone had time to read their sentences.  The rest of the class wrote their guess(es) for the lies on a whiteboard, showed on the count of 3, and got a point for each lie guessed.  If no one guessed correctly, the speaker got points equal to the number of sentences written.  You could do the game portion in small groups, or have teams write the sentences as "so-and-so did such-and-such" instead of "I", then present together.

Miscellany:

A crossword for filler (mostly translation).

Two simple songs featuring simple past are The Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There" and Various Artists' "(Bang Bang) My Baby Shot Me Down" (not easy to sing, though).  They can find these at the noraebang, too.  Lyrics for Beatles attached.
- Lyric video for Standing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrBMFZmQN3w
- Lyric video for Glee version of Standing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VolopkBCsNo
- Lyric video for Guetta's short version of Bang Bang: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3x2ABSAMVno
Missing a font for my materials?  Try these:
- Handfish Suite by Paul (http://www.waygook.org/index.php?topic=9060.0)
- Century Gothic, Segoe Print, & Berlin Sans FB (print-style sans serif, packaged with MS Office)

Took me a while to find an easy past tense song but this one seems to be perfect. Great for low ability kids.
