EXID, a Korean girl group, recently went to LA where they were greeted by their adoring fans. One member spoke English and American TV channel TMZ made fun of her accent. There's been outrage in Korea regarding the show's racist coverage.

I'm just glad that we don't have to put up with that kind of attitude here in Korea.

Anyone else come across this story? Any thoughts?

Here's the video for those interested.

First, isn't TMZ a show, not a channel?

Second, it's known to be the lowest of the low.  It's endlessly mocked and used as a reference for the downfall of Western civilization.

Third, the annoying girl tried for about 3 seconds to make fun of the accent and then the guy tells her NO, STOP.  Yeah, they're all laughing, but the joke is that the white girl is being stupid and racist.

Fourth, I can't believe I'm defending TMZ.  This is what Korea has made me into.

yup i heard about this. apparently the girls are all butthurt and now their management company is thinking about suing TMZ: http://www.koreaboo.com/news/yedang-entertainment-responds-tmzs-racist-coverage-exid/

gotta love it. i've had koreans laugh in my face when i try and speak korean. i've had my accent mocked so many times i've lost count, and my pronunciation isn't really that bad most of the time.

but now a US TV show makes fun of the way a korean speaks english and there's talk of a lawsuit. gotta love it. the hypocrisy in this country is absolutely mind-boggling sometimes.

HAHAHAHA. I hope they do sue. That will get thrown out in a heartbeat.

If the USA is extremely fortunate, and by extension the entire planet save Korea, maybe no K-Crud group will ever leave this peninsula and try to inflict their specific brand of mental torture on people.

How is making fun of an accent even racist? Accent isn't connected to a race, but is a regional sound. I've had my accent made fun of so many times and have never cried racism.

I wouldn't expect Koreans to be overly sensitive about racism. I've seen black face on TV and cartoons this in national newspapers-

Yeah...Because Korean people are so good at understanding racism.  Just search this site and see how many Koreans thought Japan rigged the ferry to sink after 20 years of service.
It's -ev to deal with some people.

There is always going to be a few dumb, racist, sexist, etc in any group.  If the K-pop's record label wants to sue, they have no shot.

As an american, I am pretty happy the way TMZ handled this.  Howard, I think thats the name of the boss, shut it down quickly.  Everyone was on the side of either it was racist, not funny, or both.

Not bad impressions, considering they were in a foreign language for her. However the first two sounded more like a Korean person with an American accent and a Korean person with a British accent.

She sounded Filipino to me, not sure why they would be crying so much about it.

Listening to Koreans freak out about people making fun of (being racist towards) their accent/culture/society/eye shape.....is laughable in the extreme.

I've been to somewhere around 4 dozen countries. In my experience Koreans are the most intolerant xenophobes I have ever met. This is, in fact, the only country I have ever been where I have been refused service and kicked out of a business establishment simply because I am not Korea (ie: different accent/skin colour/eye shape....)

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Oops....was that racist?????

I think that impersonating people is funny. It can be a form of flattery and it can point out how stupid a stupid person looks.   I would rather have that than pc rules.   Tina Feys impersonations of Sarah Palin are a good example.  She made a terrible person look ridiculous  by showing how ridiculous she was.   I would rather have that than sit quietly and take an idiot like that seriously.   I think most countries are careful to ridicule because of defamation laws or corruption; powerful people can exert influence. .
It's not that diverse here.  Most Koreans live in a bubble and Seoul is mostly a large village with weak communities; so their Korean identities are very prevalent. Everyone is everyone's brother, sister, mother or father,  and you don't need to know much more than how old someone is, what job they have and whether or not they are married.

It's not racist, it's linguist.  ;D

TMZ is bottom of the barrel, but they were in the wrong. However, people here do this kind of shit often enough.

Holy cow. I didn't watch the TMZ clip until just now.

Really? That's the extent of what was said?

Everyone in the "newsroom" chided the woman for being so dumb and cracked jokes about how insensitive and goofy she was. That's what they were laughing at, because everyone knows it was a no-no.

To be honest, what she said wasn't a big deal, though I can say I wouldn't have done that myself because...well, it's just tacky.

But really?
