Star Trek is better than Star Wars because it's less focussed on ACTION (blowing things up - other lifeforms in crafts) and more focused on DRAMA (the decision-making process and effect of technology).

Star Wars and Terminator go together.
Star Trek and 2001 A Space Odyssey go together.

What wow! vs. What-if?

You can like Star Wars if you are an action flick fan (gawd I've met many of them);
You must like Sci-fi to like both Star Trek & 2001 A Space Odyssey.

Comparing Star Wars to Star Trek is like comparing Jerry Lee Lewis to Beethoven, each was a genius, one breaking the mold, the other defining it.

I like both immensely, but they are apples and oranges.

I came to Star Trek with Next Gen, so that will always be my go to. I felt Voyager had the same kind of notion of NG, with the goal to explore life and different issues.

I really didn't like DS9, the stationary nature of the space station was a hard sell for someone who loved the idea of exploration on a spaceship. I also felt that DS9 took Star Trek into a dark era of war and all that and away from the optimistic exploration of self, species and space. The difference was kinda reflected between the Enterprise D and E (if my memory is correct). But that's just my opinion and it might not be popular or even correct in others views (this is a very contentious forum topic imo)

Damn...solid points minus the usual 'nerd emotions' that goes with the trekkie vs Star wars debate. impressive.

DS9 was really good, with probably the best acting and some terrific episodes. However, there was just something about TNG with the staff meetings and the way Data and Picard explored issues that really made it special. I do like The Original Series for its charm, but there were some really bad cornball episodes. It's very hit or miss.

As far as the films, IV was my favorite and I think it highlights the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars. Star Wars would never think to have a film with no real villain, no real combat, with saving the planet by rescuing an endangered species all to make peaceful contact. Wrath of Khan and First Contact were good as well. 

Hard to believe this is actually a topic of discussion.  But, I got to say William Shatner is a pretty guy in real life. 

Also, whales will save the universe.

Let me be clear: I ONLY like DS9.  Until Worf and Jadzia hooked up and basically ruined both of their characters. And then for some reason Laura from Kids In the Hall...UGH WHY

The Cardassians were some of the best villains and were great conversationalists. Also, the Terok Nor episodes were really dark and a great contrast.
