The 7 major English speaking countries.
« on: January 12, 2011, 12:29:03 PM »
Here are power points for the major English speaking countries:

Britain, Ireland, S Africa, Australia, NZ, Canada and the US.

I've included England, Scotland, Wales and Northern island as one, I'm English so I've not done this out of ignorance I just thought that it would be easier. The Ireland ppt is on the British slideshow but it's in a different section with explanations that it is a totally seperate country.

As you will see when you look through these, some of them are adaptations or direct copies of ppts that have been posted by other users on here so thanks for the help.

I just thought it might be handy for people to have all 7 in one topic post.

Feel free to let me know if anything is incorrect.

I also have video clips of people speaking in the accents of all of the 7 different countries but they're not currently downloaded on to this computer, I'll stick them on here once I get round to it.

Nice PPTs :D
As a South African I obviously went to check SA first :P
Good research, just a couple of points :
Good Evening in Afrikaans : 'Goeie Naand' (With an 'n' small change a know, but it changes the meaning)
And the other one was......uhm....oh yeh! It's Table Mountain (Not table TOP mountain)

And if you want to add anything else, it is interesting that South Africa has 11 languages, not just Afrikaans extra, you can quite easily find the greetings for all of them on the net I'm sure :D

Good job though! I might use it! xD

Oh yeh and I wanted to say the pic of those Koeksisters looks yuck! :O Not the ones they have at the church. A Proper koeksister is long and JUICY xD Oh and...we don't call it football, it's soccer :P

Australia, home to scores of animals that are only found on the contintent, and you didn't explore farther than Kangaroo's and Koala's?

New Zealand, you didn't mention any of the animals at all.

Tsk.  :(

Good general overview though.

Yea I know there's loads more animals etc I just did the real basics, it would be good if people from all of the other countries added to the power points and then reposted then we could have much more accurate broader ppt's.

Sorry about the mistakes also, table top mountain, not really sure how that came about haha nm. All little things I hope.

Hey webster,

Canadians are "Canucks" and good-bye in French is au revoir.

I already used a NZ powerpoint when introducing myself, which I am now regretting because I like this one. This is the same New Zealand one as above, but with bungee jumping in the sports section because people always ask me about it, and my slides of animals added on the end. The cave weta always gets a good response. The moa at the end is my cue to start talking about extinction and introduced species.

I have no powerpoint skills so my added slides are just straight pictures and text I'm afraid.

Yea, as I said there's lots of stuff that I didn't put in there, feel free to add to it.

It's not so much "stuff that you didn't put in there" as "stuff that is wrong."  Bonjour is hello.  You have it listed as "hello" and "goodbye."  "Au revoir" is the correct phrase for "goodbye."  (Your double use of "salut" is fine.)

I disagree with Webster on the "canucks" thing, though.  (His/her spelling is correct, but...)  It's a slang term that many Canadians do not identify with.  "Canadians" would be more accurate.

When you have time, could you correct these errors?  A lot of teachers just download the first link they see, even if corrections were made by later posters to the thread.

Please, everyone, check the appropriateness of your terminology before you teach it in class.  When I was editing a district workbook once, a teacher had submitted not just mildly-questionable slang, but actual racial epithets as part of his nationalities lesson.  Research before teaching, please!

The flag you have representing Northern Ireland is actually the flag of St Patrick. The Northern Ireland flag looks like this

http://www.balloonees.com/images/flags/Northern_Ireland.png

Also it's called Northern Ireland not Northern Island as you have on both the OP and the actual Powerpoint. The capitals of each country are:

 England/London, Wales/Cardiff, Scotland/Edinburgh and Northern Ireland/Belfast

I've just downloaded the PPT again and it says Northern Ireland, on here it was just a typo cos I was rushing.

Also I did not want to know the capitals of Each of the UK countries, I think that's quite obvious, it was for use in the class to encourage student interaction.

Thanks for info on the flag though.

Didn't mean to sound condescending, if that's what came across. I read your post over again and realised you were from England and would therefore know the capitals quite well :-[. I appreciate the PowerPoints and plan on using them

The mis-spelling of Northern Ireland is on page 6, the caption under the newspaper article...

I would also say that "Howsit" is a more widely used greeting in South Africa than "Hey Bra"-usually only guys say that.

Great resource, thanks!!!

I think you better be careful about saying "English speaking countries." I mean, these are Anglo-English speaking countries. Nigeria has over 4 million English speakers as a native language, more than Ireland. And the Phillipines has almost 4 million as well. And if we are talking about numbers of total speakers, India blows everybody else away.

But cool to have info!!!

Nah, you've just picked up on the Konglishi pronunciation: Ireland = /a-i-lan-du/; island = /a-i-lan-du/. Same same.

I think we're talking mainly about countries for whom English is their native tongue...
