Movies suggestions for final weeks of school
« Reply #140 on: July 03, 2013, 09:57:45 AM »
Since final exams have finished this week, we have two more weeks of school where my co-teachers and I agree that students will not have any interest in learning new lessons.

Luckily, my Co-T has suggested that we show a film for those last weeks; however, it should be both educational and entertaining. I would love to hear any suggestions you all might have for a movie that fulfills this criteria.

She's the man.  While, not educational in the traditional sense, it does promote gender equality.  I believe it's PG-13.  It's more suitable for 3rd grade middle schoolers and up.  It has soccer for male students and a love story for girls.  I've shown it to 3rd graders in the past with no complaints.

"she's the man" has worked well for me in the past!  as has:
-School of Rock
-Akeelah and the Bee
-step up 2 (or any of the step up movies)
-clash of the titans (good for boys)
-despicable me
-elf (for after winter exams)

No, I don't show movies everyday.  I actually prefer not to show them, if i do, i end up having to watch the movie like 20 different times.  By the end of the week i know every line.  ㅠㅠ

Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course

It was the only movie Steve Irwin did and it is fantastic.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

You can argue this teaches them what schools in America are like as well as American culture in general.

pretty much any Doctor Who episode that takes place back in time on Earth. They did a whole stand alone episode about ancient Vesuvius that was pretty good.

and if you can find it,

"Tall Tale" by Disney about Pecos Bill and Paul Bunyan was a GREAT movie for kids. I wish I had a copy of it.

That's true. It is a disgrace to my gender that I can quote Twilight.

I work at a Girls High School and they love anything with strong female characters:
Devil wears Prada
Brave
Coraline
Hunger Games
They have all been a great success. ;D

My students loved Freaky Friday. It's reasonably clean, funny, and allows the students to see what teenage life is like in the West (or at least, in America). Good for both boys and girls, although I've never heard my middle school girls laugh so hard before.

I made a fb page to share classroom videos and movies, you may want to check out.

Anywho, I'll be showing Dead Poets Society for the remainder of this week and then Big Fish next week.

I would literally set myself on fire before forcing anyone to watch Dead Poet's Society.

I go with TV shows. They can actually be finished during a class and, if the students are lucky, we might get to see two full episodes if we start on time.

I bought The Simpsons: Season 6 DVD set and there are a ton of streaming sites with Korean subtitles. I also found a site that has every episode of Adventure Time with Korean subtitles. I've done Doctor Who and Warehouse 13. I thought about Teen Wolf or Arrow, but they're probably too sexy for middle school.

I like the idea of adventure time episodes.

What site did you get the Korean subtitles from?

Worked well with middle schoolers:  Up (though the boys were a little bored in the beginning), Treasure Planet, Coraline.

I also have shown Doctor Who, but since my kids all liked it so much that most of them have looked up and watched the rest of the shown on mgoon, I'm thinking about starting them on Merlin next week...we'll see.

Did not work: Megamind.  They were bored out of their minds and we never finished the movie, just moved on to something else.

What about Just for laughs gags? There is actually no speaking so it can be watched by a universal audience. I will so some at the end of my class today after some speaking with the students and some games of Chinese Whisperers.

Thanks! Currently have problems updating my Real Player. It's all in Korean, so I'll get my co-teacher to help me later on.

I showed my students Wall-E and then had them write an essay.  Attached is the essay assignment, rubric for grading, along with a worksheet.  They really loved the second half and still talk about the movie (showed two months ago).

I have been showing my girls high school students Pitch Perfect this week and it is killing them. They love it!

Also download your movie and give the USB to one of your students...guaranteed 15 minutes later you will have subtitles!

I've been showing The Amazing Spider-man, and my dudes have been digging it.
