The first day we observed a tutor teach a real class and then after that they would teach us (as if we were the students) to demonstrate particular activities or methods.  Mini lessons as Oglop says above.

That was really helpful but I always remember thinking at the time that these mini lessons are going so smoothly because we're all speaking the same language as the teacher and each other
One of our instructors did a lesson to us in 100% Portuguese, so we got an idea what it would be like to be a student in an immersion class

That's a standard part of the course but it has to be done properly as it's supposed to show students how it's possible to teach entirely in the target language. I had a tutor's wife, who wasn't a teacher, try to teach us Farsi and we learned about three expressions in three lessons.

our CELTA teacher did that but using Polish and I still remember 'dzień dobry', but we're going back a while mind.

ah really. our instructor did it properly, although she aimed it way above our level (on purpose), and made some obvious teaching mistakes, and then after the lesson asked if we had any criticisms (and what mistakes she made). i guess the lesson was "don't do these mistakes"

i would have preferred it if she had done it like a real lesson if i'm honest

I had to teach Italian on a CELTA course and actually enjoyed it a lot more than if I'd been teaching English to a beginner's class. Just because it was different I guess.

nice. you speak italian? i guess it also gave her a chance to see us all suffer for an hour or so. i'd probably enjoy making my students suffer too, especially if there were a a couple of cocky students in the class (which was definitely the case on my course)
