Grade 6 Lesson 12 - I'll Miss You (Vande Voort, 교학사)
« on: November 27, 2012, 01:18:39 AM »
FINALLY!!!

After what seemed like endless hours of sitting through the crappy chants, half-arsed songs and clumsy skits and stories, we have arrived at the final lesson of this horrid textbook! Hallelujah!!!

Big questions about this textbook:

Did everyone involved find out they had to make this textbook the day before the deadline?

Did anyone involved in this textbook actually have any classroom experience, especially with Gr. 6 students?

Was there a native English speaker involved? Did they at least get a native English speaker to have a look before going to print?

Good riddance! And congratulations to everyone for surviving this dreck!

Anyways, here's a list of posts using other textbooks on the future tense.

"I'm Going to Fly a Kite"
"What Are You Going to Do Tomorrow?"
"I Will Go to the Mud Festival"
"What Are You Going to Do Tomorrow?"
"I'm Going to Nuri Middle School"
"What will you do this summer?"

The textbook is the worst one I've worked with. But I suppose I don't mind the cute cartoon stories. And the attempt to include different facts from around the world has been interesting (mainly for me... I'm not sure about the kids. my co-teacher has such a bad attitude about this book which she shares with them, that the kids don't care about anything in it even more than her *sigh*).

So what activities are you going to do then? what will you use?

We made a Christmas tree today. The kids wrote a letter to Santa using "will you?" and "I will" and a bunch of Christmas vocab. They wrote the letter on a cut out of their hand. the hands will all be stuck together for the class and made into the shape of a Christmas tree with a couple of colourful stickers, a star and some actual tinsel for decortion. rescue-idea!

I need more ideas. My co-teacher's demands are intense. nothing's ever good enough. And you can see why after the students' trained attitude that it's ok to completely dislike everything...

Beyond the multicultural bits, I'd be hard-pressed to name one more redeeming feature from this book.

Here's some ideas so far.

* Play Blondie's "One Way or Another" at the start of the class for motivation.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/HDLcyXzLMfg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

* Students listen and fill in the missing lyrics to the song "Going to the Chapel."

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/CxkkYIK_sS8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

* Using the Music Box song from the CD, ask students to change the sentences from "will" to "be going to."

* Play "America's Funniest Home Videos" clip, pause at key moments and ask the students what they think will happen next.

Found the bucket list idea on one of those threads you posted. I'm gonna do that. We'll make an actual bucket too: http://www.origami-kids.com/paperairplanes-2-popcorn-cup.htm
Oh there's also a cool video for motivation... a TV show called "The Buried Life" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRexWE9yBVA
Then cut strips of paper, write sentences and fill up our buckets. It'll be a bucket list for what they want to do in the vacation. Like a timecapsule, they can come back and check how many they've achieved after the Winter Break :)
Maybe this can be useful for others stuck with this textbook! enjoy :)

Dialog on p. 196.

Yuna: Minu, what are you going to bring for science class?
Minu: Stones.
Yuna: Stones?
Minu: Yes. I'm going to bring different stones and watch them. How about you?
Yuna: I'm going to bring my plants.
Minu: That will be great! I want to watch your plants. too.

(Don't break your neck watching those stones and plants, Minu! )

If my name was written as the author of this textbook, I'd pay to have it removed.
