Grade 1, Lesson 3: Giving Advice

This worked really well in my classes last year. I'll be doing it again next week, so I thought I'd share:

Part 1: Students watch a Mr. Bean video clip. What advice does Mr. Bean need? Brainstorm together

Part 2: Learn/review/practice with expressions for giving advice "Why don't you...? , You should/shouldn't, You'd better/better not "

Part 3: Game-- Students come up with 5 problems in a group. Students take turn reading problems aloud. First person to raise their hand and give advice for the problem earns their team a point.

Part 4: Worksheet (Finish for homework)

Grade 2 : Lesson 2.
I downloaded a PPT last week (can't remember from who, but its a brilliant lesson) and added a few minor things.

Hope someone can use it.

That was mine.

Okay, time to make my small contribution to this thread:
I put together a contest for both the 2nd and 3rd grade students - instead of each class competing against itself, I made it class against class.
Basically, it's a speed-reading contest. For the 2nd grade students, I used the last story in their 1st grade textbook, and for the 3rd graders, the last story in the 2nd grade textbook. I did this because I really didn't want to spend a lot of time on comprehension and translating, and every student was already pretty familiar with the story from having read it the previous year. This allowed me to get right into the lesson.
The contest works like this: at the beginning of class, I passed out the script of the story (one paper, two students.) We quickly read through it, with each student reading about one sentence each. After that, I passed out the same story, with one person getting one strip of paper each. Each strip of paper has the phrase "When you hear ___" and "You say ____." The students have to listen for the sentence that's listed on their paper in the "when you hear" spot, and then speak the "you say" part out loud. This continues on until the entire story is read. Any extra strips were given to class leaders, volunteers, the kid who's really bright but won't stop talking, etc etc. Myself and my coteacher would also take a strip of paper, just to make it an all-inclusive thing.
Sometimes, a lot of prodding is needed, especially when kids aren't paying attention - that's why listening is so important. I'll have the kids practice saying their sentence, and then run through the story one or two more times, depending on how quickly they do it. After that, I pull out the old stopwatch, and tell them I will be timing them on it. Boy do they love that - especially when they're also told that ALL the classes will be doing this same lesson. For a little more competitiveness, I'll give them the slowest and the fastest time to date, so they know what time they have to beat. At the end of the week, the class with the fastest time wins a prize. (I splurged and got Choco pies and ice cream for the winning class, and my kids will love me forever and ever because of it.)
This lesson by far was the biggest runaway hit with all my students -  not only was it easy, but it really engaged them. They have to listen, read AND speak, and I love that. Even the students who are not good at English and the trouble makers were participating. It's also the best feeling ever when a class gets a really fast time, and they all erupt in cheering. (and conversely, the WORST feeling when they don't....)
I've included both the "script" of the story, as well as the word doc that has the "when you say" and "you hear" sections ready to go - all you have to do is cut the strips of paper out. Hope this works for you!

An expanded logic puzzle lesson with riddles, tongue twisters, logic puzzles, etc to keep the brain functioning. I made it to go along with Thomas Orr chapter 2 Use it or Lose it.

enjoy!

Here is my lesson plan for Grade 2 Lesson 3b.

I borrowed some material (an idioms quiz) from other contributors on this thread and made my own powerpoint slideshow.

Don't know if this is something you were looking for ... but there are a few science tricks listed.
This is lesson seems awesome!  Kudos to it's maker

http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,2455.0.html

Good luck

Does anyone have any ideas for Grade 3 Lesson 4, Magic science tricks? This lesson is just dire. The only idea I can come up with is teaching the kids "Do you know why/how("how" is more natural imo) it works?" and then showing them the video of the mentos experiment and have them explain how it works in english

Grade 1 Lesson 4:  "Welcome to my Dol Party"
....I put together a contest for both the 2nd and 3rd grade students...I made it class against class...Basically, it's a speed-reading contest....Hope this works for you!
Mistee, I'm stealing this idea for my Grade 1s  First I'll quit eating Strawberries while typing as a leaf almost snuck into my keyboard :)...Oh yeah, the lesson.
First, we'll listen to the book disk (haven't used it yet). Second, we'll do a class read-through. Then, I'll do a solo reading while the Ss follow in their Texts, and ask them to spot the words I read incorrectly. Finally, I'll do your sequential reading task.
I'm attaching my cut up script for Gr 1 Lesson 4:  "Welcome to my Dol Party"   I am looking forward to doing it Mistee. Thank you for the great idea.
Edit: The only thing that I'll change for next class is the sequential reading. Last class I scattered the readings throughout the room. Unfortunately, some kids couldn't hear/understand others' readings, and didn't know when it was their turn. Today I'll give out the strips in numerical order, so each student will read directly after their seatmate reads. Smashing lesson. Thanks again Mistee.

Here's a "Trivia Tournament" I made for Grade 3, Lesson 1 (Do you remember..).

I stole the concept and one or two questions from this site, but it's a whole new layout.

I will break the class into groups of about four. At the end of each round we check answers and tally up the points.

For round 3, students have to identify the artist and song. I'm using Paparazzi (Lady Gaga), Breath (B2ST), Lucifer (Shinee), Baby (Justin Bieber), Why are you being like this (T-ara), and maybe a bonus of California Gurls (Katy Perry).

For round 4, I used a bunch of my own pictures. They're deleted from this version, so you'll have to put in new pics and questions, or delete the round entirely. I left the questions so you could wonder what the pictures were :)

For round 5, we will watch the Dead Parrot Sketch. I've never shown Monty Python in class before, but I think they'll like it. The version linked to in the ppt has Korean subtitles.

I haven't tried the PPT version (as opposed to the pptx) so I can't guarantee that all the bells and whistles work.

Grade 3 Lesson 4 Magic Science Tricks

I hate this awful book sometimes! I have no idea what the focus of the lesson is supposed to be, but I guess it's about giving instructions. I quickly made this simple worksheet so the students can practice writing and speaking simple sentences. The words in the box are just to help the students.

Grade 1 , Lesson 3 (Why? Because...) - Speak Out
« Reply #115 on: April 11, 2011, 12:26:17 pm »
This must have been the most challenging assignment that I have had to date, trying to figure out how to stretch the usage of 'why? because...' into a 45 minute period. Anyhow, I have just completed the speak out section for Grade 1, Lesson 3 (Why? Because...) and I have uploaded them through my website (http://www.cocoinkorea.com> Teacher Materials).

I hope that you find them useful/helpful and I want to thank everyone who has given my positive feedback on my previous lessons.

Have a great day!

Hey Cocoinkorea, I haven't taught the grade 1 textbook, but I find that if the 'speaking out' is a bit too basic I just teach both dialogues in one lesson. This gives me an extra class to teach my own, non textbook based, lesson. Did your co-teachers tell you that you have to teach from the text only?

Hello,

I was told only to do the Speak Out sections covering 3 class periods. Unfortunately that means that I have a total of 135 minutes to cover 1 page. That's a lot of time, so I break it up and add extra materials for each section.

Hey all, I have planned my lessons and use an internet program called prezi, I would strongly recommend you take a look - it's like power point, but free, online and I find it is much more engaging that power point. This is partly because power point can be overused and can become monotonous where as prezi looks interesting.

I am happy to share my lesson / presentations with anyone who wants them. I use drop box to store them, if you'd like just get drop box, and I will share my folders so you can Sync my files online. If you use the following link I benefit from getting slightly more storage space, you will benefit from my lessons!
