i have a review game for grade 3 lessons 1-3.  i made questions from the listening/speaking and reading sections.

this game is sort of like musical chairs except you pass around an object.  in my case, i have a digimon action figure and a board eraser.  use what you want.  in order for the music to work, you need to have the ppt and the music file in the same folder.

btw the music slide automatically advances so you don't have to click on it.

I showed some pictures to my middle level first graders for the lesson on 'why?because...' to have them create statements about the pictures. One of my students looked at a picture of a boy smiling and lifting a dog up out of a box and wrote the following script:

"The boy is happy. Why? Because for his birthday present he got dog meat."

I asked the student, 'Dog meat? Is the boy going to eat th dog?"

My student looked up at me, smiled, and nodded her head 'yes'. I was not expecting that one. Kids can give you very interesting responses when you allow them to create their own stories.

We have midterm exams at my school next week. The exam will contain the language learnt from lessons 1, 2 and 3. Here is a bomb review game, that covers most of what my kids learnt.

Grade 1 - Review game
Grade 3 - Review game

Grade 3 lesson 4A - Can you show me how.

A simple lesson for this boring topic. Basically just asking how something is done and then asking the question "Are you following me?"
I stole the worksheet from a very kind teacher on this thread - thanks so much, I forget who you are. Forgive me.
As part of the speaking activity each student will draw a map from their house to the school and explain to their friend how to get there.

Grade 3 Lesson 4:

This takes a bit of room prep, but it's lots of fun and can take up about 40 minutes.

After the Listen In section, (C) review how to give directions. Turn left, go forward, back up, etc. I split my classes up into teams of about 6, and then gave each team an object for a target. We left a few desks and chairs in the way, as well as the occasional teacher as an obstacle! Students have to direct each other, one at a time across the room to retrieve their object. Blindfolded or not, it's up to you. :)

This thread is fantastic! Right now at school I am reviewing each of the chapters before the Midterm. I'm attaching my PPT for Grade 3, Unit 1 (The Full Jar).

I'm reviewing the phrases "Supposed to vs likes to" and "Not supposed to."

I always like to include some kind of film clip in my lessons, so here's the link to "The Joy Luck Club" dinner scene I used in this PPT.

It has worked really well, especially because it has subtitles. I've attached the Worksheet I used for the class also.

Hope this all helps! And as you can see I've borrowed from others on here as well. Thanks for posting.

Click on "Whack a Mole" to take you back to the mound slide.
Thank you for the rescue gksgangchu.  I'll post my game here for a few days if anyone wants it, and to the Thomas Orr thread where it'll have permanent residency. It's all about the "School is fun" story. I'm planned till ch 4, but the Ss are just finishing ch 2.  Last semester they were fly'n through the book at a pace that wouldn't let me stop planning.

The textbook used at my school for the first graders is called "Middle School English 1" by Thomas Orr. It has a picture of a boat on the front cover. It also has this on it if you can read hanguel: 이인기  김순천  윤승남  남조우  박성근 .

This powerpoint has three levels of questions: easy, medium, and hard. I divide the class into teams (seven in mine because there are seven tables). On the board I keep track of each team's score. I also draw a grid that looks like this...

Questions
easy      1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
medium  1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
hard       1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

... and I mark off the questions as I go along.

I start the class with an easy question, and which ever team answers the first question correctly, gets to choose either an easy, medium, or hard question. Then I scroll to the next question in the powerpoint. The questions in the powerpoint are ordered by level of difficulty. The students continue choosing the difficulty until all the questions are answered.

Throughout the game I'll ask questions like, "What's another way you can answer/say/ask this?" and I'll give a point to those teams who figure out another way to answer. Or one I use all the time, "What's another way to say this word in English?" I also make sure the entire class claps after someone comes up to the board regardless if the student gets the answer right or wrong. It's hard for them to come up to the board. I usually give candy to the winning team.

Through my website, under 'Teacher Materials', I uploaded my materials for the second part of the Speak Out section.

I used Avril Lavigne's 'Sk8er Boi' song to discuss common English we use and there is a worksheet that accompanies it.

Happy Teaching!

Open Up Your Heart popup card activity for Grade 2's

Last year I used the Open Up Your Heart activity (Blue book pages 54 and 55) and it worked very well. Basically, students make popup cards with a message in English for their parents. This activity is very easy because all of the instructions are in the book! I plan on doing this activity with my students the week of May 2nd to May 6th. The template for the hearts is on page 211 of the red/brown activity book and the students can bring their own materials if you tell them in advance.

Pro tips from last year.

1) The template (Red/brown activity book page 211) is far to small, so I suggest blowing it up and giving it to the kids.
2) Provide an example of what they should write on the board because some of the low level kids will have a real difficult time.
3) Students should write a rough draft of their message before they start to write it on their popup card. This draft will lets you proofread there work before it's too late.
4) Let the kids know about the activity a week before and they will bring their own materials.
5) Students should glue the original template to a heavier piece of paper in order to ensure the card isn't too flimsy.
6) READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND HAVE THE STUDENTS REPEAT THEM TO YOU!!! The instructions are all in English, so some students might have problems if you don't go over them.

This activity was a lot of fun last year and some of the more artistic students made some really beautiful cards.

EDIT: Scanned the heart template for anybody who needs it.

Thomas Orr Grade 1 Midterm Review Worksheet
« Reply #152 on: April 22, 2011, 08:50:56 AM »
Hey guys-

This is the midterm review worksheet I made for Grade 1 out of Lessons 1-3 In the Thomas Orr books.

It should cover ever grammar point in the first three chapters... I added a lot of pics too! :)

Hope it's useful...

BTW, I make my worksheets on ppts just because I think it's easier than with Word. It's not an actual ppt presentation, just one page.

Grade 2, lesson 4 (open up your heart)
Lesson 4A: What are you going to do on your birthday.

This is quite simple.
I explain the use of the future tense verb "going to" and then use several example sentences to illustrate it. I then move on to giving answers to the questions and telling a bit about what we do on certain days in Western cultures.
Lastly we do the worksheets.

Hope it can help someone.
