GRADE 3 LESSON 10

"Can you tell me...?"

A PPT, game and worksheet to hopefully make teaching this lesson a bit more enjoyable (for us and the students).
Comments of what I plan to do at each stage are included on the notes section on the PPT.

As a warm-up I'm gonna play the opening credits to Seseme St and ask ss to listen for the 'can you tell me' question so you'll need to download the song file - I tried to attach it to no avail, sorry!

Enjoy!

Grade 2: Lesson 10 (I think you should...) and Lesson 11 (Growing Up) combined lesson

PPT: Tell students to imagine YOU are a career counselor. Listen to the studentsÂ’ interests and give them career advice. Example: "I am smart and fast. I am interested in catching bad people." -- "I think you should be a police officer."

WKST: Review jobs through cross word puzzle. Take the career quiz to find out what kind of jobs they should have in the future. Finally, rate different careers (1-5) on how much you would like to do that job.

Grade 1, Lesson 10:A  (What do you want to do?)

Lesson plan,  Handout/PPT, Steal/Swap/Bust PPT Game

On the handout, you have to add some pictures to match the ppt. Shouldn't take long, I just got a little lazy. (sorry). And for the "Steal, Swap, Bust" game-- I got the idea from waygook, but just put it together in a PPT game format because my kids loves the bells and whistles.

I am going to send a special shout out to Machoman and chris0206. The stuff you posted for Grade 3 Lesson 9 has saved me from a dreadfully boring and repetitive rehashing of last years material.  Thank you both very much!

thank you thank you....

and i'd like to thank chris0206 for uploading that game.... however, i revised it by changing the rules and changing some of the "do you minds.."  hopefully it's more interesting.  just a warning if you download the original version that chris0206 posted, there are a few slides with grammar errors, the creator wrote "I" twice in many of the slides.

it's now more of a truth or dare kind of game minus the truth part.

and also, instead of passing a pen to choose the two players, i am having the class play the 눈치 game.  if you guys don't know the 눈치 game your co teacher should know.  or, just ask me.

**** EDIT***** the previous version i uploaded didn't have the right animations set during the rule part.  i fixed it.  sorry bout that.

Machoman and chris0206 - Thank you so much for your genius grade 3, lesson 9!! You don't even know how this has saved me!  and Machoman ... that 눈치 game was a terrific hit!!
 ;D
If you know any other games like that one please share ... that just may help me survive my 3rd grade classes

ah thank you thank you, but i need help with grade 3 lesson 10!!!!.... feeling a little uninspired these days.  anyone got any ideas??

For the Grade 3 Lesson 10 ... My co-teacher actually saved me! LOL

She gave me a racing game and a matching game. So this is what I am doing (and it's worked our really well for class and DEF keeps them talking):

First I warm up with a 'stand-up/sit-down' activity. I ask the students to stand if they "have heard of" blah blah (beyonce for example) they stand if they have and sit if they haven't. Sometimes students aren't sure of what I am asking ... so then I go into the explaination of the keyphrase "have you head of...".

Then I move onto the activity. I divide the class into either teams of 2 or 3 depending on class size.  I will show them a picture of someone/something from the PPT, and say 'have you heard of ...", they race to the back of the class and find the correct response (printed on large slips of paper and scattered around ontop of their lockers). Once they have found the correct response they will bring up the slip to me and I will check it; if it's good they read the response using "Sure. Isn't it(he/she) ..." They will win a point for their team.

I then move onto the next part of the lesson "can you tell me why". For this I used a 'find your partner' activity. I have printed out a 'can you tell me why' question slip and an answer/response slip. So I will pass out to each student one slip. They have to memorize their slip (otherwise they won't talk) and I recollect them. Then once they've memorized their slip - they will get up and mingle to find their matching partner.
(it's a bit more challenging)

After this activity, I go back to the 'have you heard of' phrase by using a musical chairs-like game. Depending on class size (i've used 15 students in one circle) divide the students to make 1-2 circles. Bringing their chairs into this circle find one student to volunteer or do some RSP game to get a student to stand in the center of the circle, removing their chair so now the circle has one less chair than people. The student in the center is standing and must use "have you heard of ..." and they can say whoever/whatever they want. The goal being they want to sit down, so they should ask a question that everyone mostly has heard of. Because the students sitting down must get up and change seats if they have heard of whatever was asked of them. They really enjoy this activity and will think of good questions so they can sit down.
I got this idea from someone here ... so thank you!  :D

I hope it wasn't too long winded ... good luck.

thanks for these ideas, gonna use 'em next week.

the instructions might seem long, but it's not confusing, i promise.  and my students love this game.

divide the class into teams.  5-6 people in a team is a good number for this game.

the questions are divided by the main grid.  A-F and 1-6.  i explain to them that if the team gets the correct answer, they get a weapon.  the weapons are as follows:

a little gun which allows u to kill off one student from another team.
a big gun which allows u to kill 2 students.
a landmine, which kills them self,
a hospital which revives a dead student and a sheriff which kills a student for 2 questions.

if a student is killed, it means they are out of the game.  so, the students should try to kill off the best students.

example:

select a question (e.g.: A1) and the first student to raise their hand gets to answer the question.  show the answer, award the points and then go back to the main page.  if the answer is correct, there are white squares below labeled A1, A2, A3.....F1, F2 F3 etc. etc.   select the corresponding box (in this case, you would choose the small white A1) and the weapon will appear.

Grade 3, Lesson 11 A  isn't so bad... part B is the ridiculous part.

In teaching part A, you could do "what are you going to do" and "what are your plans"?  make a handout with verbs/phrasal verbs that are semi appropriate and interesting. I use stuff like karaoke, make out with (my boyfriend TOP), work out, hang out with friends, chill, etc.

have them do a crossword puzzle with missing dialogue and phrasal verbs
then, post up flashcard pictures on the board, have students use the flashcards in full sentences answering the dialogue question and after a student from each team has answered a question, use a quick bomb game like "hearts, guns, bombs" ppt game.

quick and easy.

for part B, I have nothing interesting. I probably won't even teach lesson 11 because they'll be done with final exams and I fear teaching textbook after finals. the 3rd graders go off the edge.

I don't know if me making out with T.O.P. would go over that well for a male teacher in an all boys school, but I will try ha ha.  The problem for me is I already covered intention two lessons ago, :( but those ideas seem good to me! Also, TRUST ME don't touch the textbook after the final exam.

Grade 1 Lesson 11

I took one of the creative thinking questions from lesson 10 and expanded it on this powerpoint. It's about filling up a water bottle. The students should know the first few steps of the question already if they studied lesson 10.

The second part is an expansion from a, "Guess Who?" game I found on Waygook. I just attached the game to the powerpoint, copy and pasted some pictures from the game to introduce some sentence structure based on Listen In, Part B, and Speak Out, Part B, Number 2. Click on the NAME, NOT the picture for the powerpoint game to work.

I have also attached a screenshot of the game. What you can do, if you have a color printer at work and a laminator, is print out 10 color copies, laminate the copies and let the kids use a whiteboard marker to play in small groups. Stress that they MUST use a whiteboard marker! Some kids might use a pen on the boards making them useless after one game.

@ jaysoon ... awesome!!! thanks so much for this game. it looks great!

re: grade 3 lesson 11 .... i know it's a lot of work, but i was thinking maybe a game of 'Go Fish' for the phrasal verbs (I'm planning to...) . As for the ending a conversation stuff (Sorry, but I have to go now.), since the book doesn't seem to spend too much time on it, I'm not planning to either. Maybe just go over the dialogue as a class, some quick practicing speaking in pairs, then another quick-ish PPT quiz with some extra examples to get the students to generate the target language for it.

Also, a while back on here... someone posted another really awesome TIC-TAC-TOE  game for Lesson 10's 'Can you tell me...?' stuff. I used it and it was great. Not every student got into it, but about half of my class liked it and actually played it properly. So, I'm thinking that game would lend itself quite well to the 'I'm planning to ...... How about you?' structure.   My co-teacher told me that it's similar to paduk where you have to get 5 in a row, or 'O-Mok', so if you're having trouble explaining how to play it to the students, just tell 'em it's like 'O-Mok' and they should understand what to do pretty quick. Hope that helps. And, thanks to everybody for all of the great ideas that you all put up here!! Have a good day!

I used renard.tami's  idea and finished a handout for this lesson using famous people's pictures and students have to write their intentions or plans in response. I will finish the ppt. file this week.

@kcampb8 All I did was find that game on waygook and build my lesson plan/ppt around the game. I take no credit for making the game. Whoever made it created a game that I look forward to playing.

Halloween PPT.

Here is a Halloween Powerpoint that you can attach to your current lesson. It's something fun to teach kids about Halloween with a little surprise at the end. I got the surprise idea from another middle school teacher on Waygook. I plan on recording the students and showing all the classes' reaction the following week.
