Okay so I've seen some really good ideas here, but I have a different sort of question/request...

Given the confusing, sporadic, some might say inane, babbling nature of these textbooks...could we post a simple 'Index' or Chapter list, detailing what the objective is for each chapter?

To be more clear..what is the focus or point of each lesson, for each Grade?

Example: "Are you a good Netizen" = learning about..._____

I don't want to copy and paste other people's ideas...I would like to learn but damn, I can't seem to grasp these topics!

Dude, I have the exact same problem. I asked my co-teacher if she could tell me what the point of each lesson is and if we can get together (each of my several co teachers and I) and actually write down the point/ objective of each lesson so that I could teach it and supplement the lesson with relevant activities. She said., "no". That's it. Plain and simple, "no". This leads me to believe that there isn't actually one. I thought it was written in Korean at the beginning of the chapter under "Focus" and "Function", but she said that it isn't.  So I make one up. It's rough. I feel your pain. If there is another. If there is another more discerning Waygookie out there who could also enlighten me and kickboxrko, that would be AWESOME.

I was given the actual CDs relating to each book to download onto my computer.  If you can get your hands on them, they actually come with a lesson plan attached, and at the top of each lesson plan is an objective, they call it 'specific aims'.  Instead of actually opening the CD on your computer, just open it so you can see all the different files on the CD, then on mine, I click into 'E-book' > 'Data' > 'Add' > then just open the various files until you find the English version of the lesson plan.  It's generally the one that has this after it: 영어 in brackets.

I really hope this helps!  It has made my life a tonne easier, and I haven't even started teaching yet.

might be a bit of a stab in the dark, but does anyone know how these textbooks could be viewed online? I stumbled across a link here on waygook yesterday and totally regretted not bookmarking it.

thanks in advance if anyone knows!

Yup, it's www.tsherpa.co.kr

You'll need to get a username and password from your co-teacher. It's great though, you can access the e textbooks and all of the multimedia resources as well.

Hope this is what you were looking for.

My school uses the second and third books you have listed but a different 1st book. Is that the case with anyone else out there?

Grade 2: Chapter 7
Famous People

Welcome back to the second semester everyone!  Ready to get back on the horse?

Here is my lesson on "Famous People." I have low level second grade students and it is the 2nd week back into school, so I did not try to tax them too hard.

First you introduce the "lesson vocab": musician, athlete, historical figure and so on.  For philanthropist, if you explain how a doctor goes to Africa and treats children for free they seemed to understand.

Then you get to play a game.  The students have four clues to guess the famous person.  If they guess on 1st clue, they get four points.  2nd clue = 3 points, 3rd clue = 2 points, 4th clue = 1 point.  I only allowed one guess per clue, and you strictly have to enforce the "only when you raise your hand" otherwise it can turn into pandemonium very quickly.  They had fun with this.

This takes maybe 15 minutes.

Then it is there turn to make four clues.  I put them in pairs and gave them a name.  They had to write four clues.  I gave them 10 minutes and then they had to share.  The team that guess the answer was the next team to read clues.

My list of famous people (which I cut out, laminated, and gave the students):
Shin Saim Dang, Gandhi, Elvis, Yu Gwan Sun, Justin Bieber, Angelina Jolie, G Dragon, Leonardo da Vinci, Obama, The Beatles, Mozart, Beethoven, myself (for kicks and giggles), Miss A, SHINee, Kim Ku, Batman, George Washington, Isaac Newton, Johnny Depp, and so on.

Hope this helps y'all.

Grade 1: Chapter 7
The Environment

Here is my Grade 1 lesson plan.  I beefed up someone else's powerpoint about how the environment is in danger (Thank you, waygook-er).  And then we practiced "You should..." and giving advice.  I have all my activities listed (I don't do them all in one class) but depending on the level of my students I will do different ones.  For my low level kids I pretty much stick to repeating the slides--extremely basic.  But for my advanced Grade Ones I give them extra examples, make them answer questions, and ask for other pieces of advice when talking about Reduce, Reuse or Recycle.

For my low level, I give them multiple "problem cards " and they have to write 3 sentences about any of the cards.  For my advanced students I give them only one card and they have to write multiple sentences about it.  The low level kids turned "I use a lot of energy" into "You should not use a lot of energy" while my advanced kids said "You should turn off the lights," "You should unplug your electronics," and "You should buy energy-saving machines."

I gave a word search to the low level kids and the "Make your own symbol" worksheet to the advanced.

Hope this helps anyone.

Wow - this is so helpful, thank you!  This is the first lesson I have to teach to my grade 2's.  I have never taught before, so this was super helpful!  Can I ask - with the famous people you put both in the powerpoint, and those that you gave out to students - were they able to guess who they all were?  I have to teach this lesson without meeting my students first, so I don't know their level / interests / or knowledge of famous people.  Don't want to have a whole lesson where they can't guess any of the answer, you know!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yesterday my co-teacher told me that I could add incorporate novels into my lessons and that students would simply have to go out and purchase them. But, what if some students cannot afford them? Has anyone ever experienced this?

Grade 2 - Chapter 7  "Want to"

First upload here, so any feedback will be appreciated.

For this lesson, I focus on the phrase 'want to.'

The warm up was taken from this thread: http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,4734.0.html

Next, I just introduce the language using my limited korean skills (hoping the translation is mostly accurate).  There is a section about "I want to try..." which explains this expression means "I want to do something for the first time" not "I want to put forth effort."

Next, we play M.A.S.H. to get the kids talking ("I want to marry Brad Pitt," "I want to drive a Ferrari.")

Finally, time permitting, we end with a music video as a backup activity.  The video I'm using is "Young Folks" by "Peter, Bjorn, and John."  I try to elicit what the characters want in the video.  "The girl wants to learn how to whistle."  "The boy wants the girl to go to his home." "They want to have a party."  "They want to play music."
Here is a link to the video:

I will probably add a worksheet or activity somewhere in the middle, as well but I haven't figured out what just yet.

Grade 1 - Chapter 7

"What should I do?"

This lesson focuses on the meaning and usage of "should" when looking for advice or expressing duty, morals, etc.

The warm up and some of the other pictures were taken from this post: http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,15675.msg126397.html#msg126397

Next, I explain that should has many meanings, and express that "should" does not mean "have to" or "must" (This is a common error from what others have told me.)

We do a worksheet which was adapted from this post: http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,18572.msg141261.html#msg141261

The game was taken from a post buried on waygook that I can't find anymore.  To be honest, I'm not positive the game is being very effective.  If I let the students stand up and walk around, then they don't practice.  They just look at each others cards and when they find a match they want a prize so you are instantly surrounded by 40 screaming kids all tugging for your attention.  If I have them stay in their seat and trade cards, it becomes really hard to get a match and often they give up after just a minute or two of trying.

I am considering going to a much simpler game (and one that requires no prep work) from the ppt in this post:
http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,1843.msg6251.html#msg6251

As with the last lesson, time permitting we watch a video.  I am using "Drive Away My Heart" by "Ida Maria" ( ).  After watching, I illicit commentary on the video "What shouldn't they have done?" (They should not have robbed the bank, they should not have ran from the police, they should not have shot their guns.') "What should she do with all the money" etc.

Again, this is only my second upload, so any advice or criticism is welcome.

This is a great idea! I used slides to teach my lower level kids, too, but they did not seem interested. The problem cards seem to be a good way to get them interested.

@rfh16

Regarding the famous people:  My kids knew all of the people on the powerpoint.  Most classes struggled with Kim Soon-Kwon, but that was the only one (and after I revealed who it was, most of the class went, "oh..ah!").  As for the name-handouts, I let the kids switch if they didn't know the group/person.  If necessary, you can make more with kpop group names--just in case.  Other names you can add, if you need them, are (that I learned after a couple of lessons with my 2nd graders): Edison, Tiger Woods, Wonder Girls, Jewelry, B2ST (Beast), 2PM, and Schubert.

For a managing tip--I don't let the kids progress onto the next "4-Clue Guess" unless they are quiet.  I don't mind the kids getting excited about celebrating a right guess, but you need to get the class back under control before you move on or it just keeps escalating.

Good luck with your first week of school!

Some teachers asked for first grade lesson eight materials.   1-8
It's hot and it's hard to think of new lessons.
I sometimes borrow and modify other's lessons from waygook, so here's mine.
This is what I did for First grade lesson eight a couple of years ago.
But the times they are a changin.

Grade 2 Chapter 8
Animals

Here is my lesson plans for Grade 2 Chapter 8.  Thanks to another waygook-er who introduced me to "Worth1000.com."  I amped up his "hidden picture" game to make a lesson.

My 2nd graders are a little ... difficult so I rely on games to keep their attention.  Thus, most of my lessons are set up to easily reward points for answers.

1.  Hidden Picture/Introduction (Animals.ptt)
     A. The "hidden picture" is a free point.  Any student can guess what the animal is.
     B. Then have specific group answer "What is the animal doing?"
     C. Introduce the animal: Sounds and/or home.

2.  Mario Brother Bomb Game (Animal Mash-up Edition) (Gr2 Ch8 Mario Brothers Animals.ppt)

3. Crossword

Hope this helps anyone.  I will continue to upload all my lessons as I finish making them.

Hello Everyone,

Dear Newbies,

Welcome to Korea!  After reading the posts of "Please, what should I do for Chapter 8!",  I wanted to share the sites I've found on Waygook that are helpful to me for lesson planning.   I hope these can help you in the next few months/year as you find your feet, build your own teaching style, and gain confidence in the classroom.

Here's a pass the bomb game that I made, combining Unit 8, Listen & Talk 1 and 2 (Redone from a different lesson made by user annekat - whose stuff I love, btw! Thanks to her!)
