If you mean pass the bomb, basically you need 1 (or 2 in my case) "bombs".  I use those plastic squeaky hammers.  They were already here so I didn't need to buy them.  You start at one end of the class and have that student pass the "bomb" to the next person, and so on until the bomb goes off.  Whoever is holding the bomb must stand up and speak/finish the dialogue.  It sounds really simple and childish but I've actually had success from 1st to 3rd grade, both high and low levels.

For Grade 3, lesson 10, check out my ppt.  It's a pretty cool game...
For Grade 2, lesson 11, I will do a lesson on the Korean Flag (google: waygook.org korean flag)

Hope this helps

Grade 3 Chapter 10 Food a Bridge between cultures
For my 3rd grade class I made this power point and worksheet.
First I went over how different cultures use the same ingredients differently Example north America Red Beans and rice is dinner in Korea red bean rice cakes are a snack.
Then I had them fill in the fill in the blank section of the worksheet.
Next I had them guess where different foods originated from.  I got my info from Wikipedia food origins
After they guessed the origins I had the students say where they thought the food was from using some of the key language in the book.  I did 2 guesses for each food unless the first guess was right.
The kids that participated really enjoyed the guessing game.

Just a tip.  I like to call on just the first student to answer ten let that student pick the next one and so on.  So every time a student answers a question they select the next student to answer.  The students like it and it is easier for me.  Plus I don't have to worry about favoring students or calling out others.

Hey Landis,

I'm not quiet to Chapter 11 yet so I don't have a full-fledged plan.  But, I have notes from Grade 2 Chapter 11 that might help with ideas.

I was thinking of doing a bingo game.  Do a quick powerpoint introducing the differences. Maybe practice a sample dialogue: "A: Now we use _____.  What did we use in the past? B: In the past we used _____."  Then, pass sheets of paper (quartered 8 X 11 size)  and have them write the English words (the present version).  And play Bingo.  To select a square they have to use the dialogue (Where you are saying the Korean word).

Another option is to print out the pictures and play a Memory Card Game.  I tried this last year and the students liked it but, it wasn't very effective as to actually using English.  This one takes more time (to prepare, and actually explain in class--Make sure you go over the instructions with your co-teacher before hand otherwise if they are translating directly it could get screwed up) AND playing in class.  It's different though, so my teachers liked it.

Thanks for the suggestions.

This week I taught Grade 3 Lesson 10 and Grade 2 Lesson 11 from the text book, which was very straightforward (and boring).

Next week my co-teacher wants me to do an "activities week." The activities I do are supposed to be somehow related to the chapters covered.
Every chapter is the same. 1 week = text book, 1 week = activities

If you have any more suggestions for "fun activities," let me know.

Yea, I like the green book. I have one lesson which is primarily based on the book and one which extends the writing section into a speaking activity

I am going to do a short activity on the Korean flag.  (10-15 min).  Then have students play battleship for the remaining of the class.  Since the let's communicate section is about asking questions, I decided to have them practice asking questions.  I got this template from eatyourkimchi.com

Enjoy.

Today is parent day at my middle school, so they'll be observing one of my classes, which means I'll need to bring my A-game when teaching!!

I'll be on Lesson 10 for grade 3, titled Food: A Bridge between Cultures.  For the warm-up activity, I added my own presentation about the origin of foods.  I'll show this presentation in the beginning and I'll start by asking the students if they know the meaning of the word origin.  I'll then show them various foods, asking the question "Where does....come from?"  I'll have them repeat.  After asking the students where they think the food comes, I'll reveal its origin, and have them repeat.

I also created a worksheet that expanded on Part B: Practice with your friend, of Listen & Speak 2.  I added a few more examples, and created a fill-in section.

Can you do it with a class of 40?

It's pretty easy and yes you can absolutely do it with 40 students.  I've done it with 35 kids (my co-teacher played with one student)

Set up students two by two.  (It's best to have the class prepared before hand that way you can just direct students to their seats)
You will need to make a wall (I used dictionaries.. basically, anything that can go between students so they can't see the other sheet)
Go through the instructions.  This is very important.  Take your time, do a lot of demonstrations.. The success of the game will depend on it.)
Then, let the kids go at it.  Walk around and monitor to make sure they are using English and you are all set and ready to go.  The kids will practice English for 20-30 minutes!!!

If you need more instructions, check out this video (this is where I got this from): eatyourkimchi.com (search battleship)

Cheers,
J

There is a video that you play about strange foods people eat; what is the url?

Team papers? how do you play the team game?

What is the golden bell game. Please elaborate!

Alright, I will try this again. I wrote the whole lesson plan only to have an error occur and lost everything.... So here goes...

Lesson 10 - Grade 3: Food: A Bridge between Cultures

After speaking with my coteacher, I approached this lesson from the thematic side rather than the form and focus of the chapter.  I don't claim ownership to any of the material provided.  I simply combined a few ppts I found on waygook.org, made a handout and ta-da.

Lesson plan: Golden bell game (I had to Google it)

To prepare: Laminate each of the team papers. (it will serve as the teams whiteboard)

Just follow the ppt... it's pretty self explanatory. (I don't feel like writing the whole thing again).  If you have any questions, just ask.

Here is a review game for Grade 2 Lesson ten. It's based on Daejeon Shaun's Mario PowerPoint game. it is 2003 compatible so no worries about something funky happening. With the program that is.

To prepare: Laminate each of the team papers. (it will serve as the teams whiteboard)

Just follow the ppt... it's pretty self explanatory. (I don't feel like writing the whole thing again).  If you have any questions, just ask.

The game is pretty simple... There is no video for this one..

1.  First, pass out the handout. (I have to give handouts for every class if I want to make questions for the final exam)  Explain that they must follow along by filling in the blanks.

2.  Do a "test run" with the first couple of slides.  (there is a video link on the word "WORLD FOOD".. The URL is .  It's a good way to introduce the Foreigner perspective on Korean Street food.

3. While the video is playing, separate the class into teams of four.  Give each group one country sheet.  That's their country for the whole game.  Write down the countries on the board (to keep track of the scores)

4.  Do the riddle just to get them warmed up.

5.  Introduce the World Food game.  Go over the rules.  (note that for the golden bell game, one student from each group must raise the team country paper when the time is up)

6.  Round one: hidden food picture. I use this as a speed round get the students into the game.  I tell them the first on to stand up gets to answer first, but they only get 2 seconds (so they don't just stand up and wait for the picture to reveal itself)

7.  The rest of the game is golden bell style.  I remind students to follow on their handouts.  And for every question, they must write the answer on their sheet and put in the air before the time is up.  If they don't - no points... If they cheat - no points.  Every team that gets the answer right gets a point.

At the end of the game, I give candy to the team that won.

Hope this helps!  Good luck!
