j_mercier85.....you posted the Grade 3 Lesson 10 Food game right?  I used it this morning and my class has soooo much fun!  Well done on the ppt!

I have one problem though.  My co teacher is having a fit because of the 2 slides with knives on them.  My problem is that I can only open the ppt in read only....could you re-post it without the knives in it?  I'd be so grateful.  I really want to use it this week but I can't unless I delete them.  (The haggis slide and the guinea pig slide).

(My computer is all Korean too so although I'm trying to figure out how to change it from read only so that I can edit it....I can't figure it out and I'm getting frustrated.)

Here you go.  Hope this is better.  Sorry for the sarcasm (see the sheep slide) but I couldn't help it.  My co-teachers thought those were the funniest slides.

Cheers,

Here is a review game for grade 1 lesson 11 Hello Dr. Einstein! I haven't used it yet just wanted to have it ready for students so I'm not rushing to put it together. Daejon Shaun's Mario game again.

for those of you still on grade 3 lesson 10, there is an awesome youtube video about the "true origins" of pizza.
it's a satirical look into the conspiracy that pizza was stolen from Korea by Marco Polo.
It's a great opener for the topic of "where does it come from?". My kids loved it.  (English w/ Korean subtitles.)

For the classes I teach i usually do listen and speak, read and do, build-up, think and write.

For Book 1 I am on ch. 11 (hello, dr.einstein) listen and speak

For Book 2 I am on Ch.9 (If I were you) build up.

And for Book 3, I am on Ch.9 (Economics help) think and write.

I am fresh out of ideas for all of these lessons. Do you have any suggestions on making these lessons...way more interesting than the textbooks make them out to be?

Thanks!

World Wonders Game (Grade 1: Lesson 12)
« Reply #286 on: November 03, 2011, 09:12:21 AM »
Hey Guys,

I made this World Wonders game recently for my advanced Grade 1s.   I got the idea/format off of j_mercier85's World Food game.  Basically, you and Indiana Jone (Who the kids do know) travel around the world looking at/exploring different world wonders (natural--not in the book, and the New7Wonders--in the book).  There are various little quizzes and pop-up "problems" along the way that the students have to answer.

I have student whiteboards--but you can also laminate a piece of white paper and give the students dry erase markers and tissue.  Works just as well.

My 1st graders are split into levels.  The Advanced students had no problem.  The lower level students had some problems.  But I think I am a little ahead of the Korean teachers so hopefully if you do this lesson in correlation to the Korean teachers, you'll have more success.  Also, to help the not-as-advanced students,  you can delete the slides for the wonders not in the book.

One more note: For Chichen Itza.  Some teachers thought the "Losers of the ball game lose their head" slide was OK, some thought not.  You might want to edit that.

Enjoy!

Grade 3: Lesson 11

I was looking around the Waygook for things on Global Warming.  I'm basically going to do my Grade 1 Lesson 7 (Environment and Advice Giving) lesson but I wanted to add something about Global Warming.  I came across this on another forum:

http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=kids.kids_index

(You can make big changes > Quickest Ever Slideshow on Global Warming)

Hope it helps

Lesson 11 - Grade 1
« Reply #288 on: November 03, 2011, 07:15:05 PM »
OK so here's what I got for grade 1 lesson 11.  I was completely uninspired with what the textbook was suggesting so I took an alternative route.  I prepared a lesson on Wacky Inventions.  Again, I combined and adjusted a bunch of PPTs that I found on here.  So I can't take the credit for all the work.

I also used the Mario bomb game that someone had posted and modified it to reflect the changes I made to the lesson.  I will post each individually because it exceeds the size... and for some reason, I can't seem to be able to compress the folder...

So here is the PPT for lesson 11 and the handouts.  You'll noticed I have some videos.  they probably won't play since i can't include them with this post.  You'll have to download them from my next post and just re-insert them into the PPT.

As for the PPT, just follow it.  Should take about 15-20 minutes

Grade 1: Chapter 11
« Reply #291 on: November 07, 2011, 10:07:55 AM »
Here is my lesson for Grade 1 Chapter 11.

Focus:  "Why...?" "Because..." and "Do you want to ...?"

It's very dry lesson material so I tried as hard as I could to make the questions fun/interesting/etc.  I just did the class with a middle level range students and they had a good time.

I go through the "G1Ch11 Dialogue Practice" to introduce the topics and grammar patterns.  It also sets a precident for how I want the questions to be answered.  Then on to Mario Bomb Game.  We do 3 rounds and it takes about 25 minutes.

The hardest part was the "Why'd the Chicken Cross the Road" in the explaining "Why/because."  It's suppose to be a joke and my teacher laughed, but I don't really think the kids got it.  I ended up extremely over-exaggerating it (belly-achying laughter) and the kids thought that was funny.

Hope this helps anyone!

Grade 2 Chapter 11/12
« Reply #292 on: November 07, 2011, 10:20:30 AM »
Here is my stuff for Grade 2 this week.

It's a comparative lesson.  I've totally stolen the entire thing from people on Waygook.

First I start with the Comparatives PPT.  I don't remember who I stole this from.  But it explains how to structure comparatives really well.

Then I simplified (hacked-up) Leo Fumigachi's Comparative Bomb game: BigBiggerBiggest.  The words were just too hard for my kids, so I've simplified "Blue Ringed Jellyfish" to just "Jellyfish".  I also couldn't get the videos to work so I edited those slides out.  Also, I changed the explanation so that it says I love dogs more than cats, because seriously, I love dogs more.  (Ps: I love Leo's material.  I used a lot of his stuff for summer/winter camps because I can take the time to explain it for middle schoolers because it's a little too hard for just a 45 minute lesson with 45 students. If you haven't looked up his stuff, check him out.)

Hope this helps anyone on Waygook, because this week, Waygook helped me out.

Grade 1, Lesson 11 "Hello Dr. Einstein!"

Hey all, as an introductory mini-game, I play 'Scramble'.  Basically, in groups of 6, students have to look at a scrambled jumble of letters and make the English word.

I sometimes use it as a 5-min filler with the stronger classes.
You get what you give :)

I think students respond really well to project based lessons like making posters or if you're feeling ambitious, like making a wallet out of recycled plastic bags.

My boys really enjoyed making the wallet, bit of a head ache though :)

Lesson 12 - Grade 3
« Reply #295 on: November 11, 2011, 08:11:20 AM »
Having completely run out of ideas for lesson 12 "Winners never quit, quitters never win".. Well actually it was more a case of being just too lazy to go with my original idea, so I decided to steal Leo Fuchigami's lesson on Extreme sports.  I felt it fit pretty well with the whole layout of the lesson, minus the heartwarming stories.

You can go here http://leofuchigami.com/lessons/?p=176 to download his lesson.  I'm just going to stick with that.

Cheers,
J

3rd grade, lesson 11, period 2 - Heal the Earth

Okay, I had to take things down a notch this week.  The students are a bit restless, out of control so I made things a bit easier for them (and me!) this week.

We are doing Listen and Speak 2 (10min)

Then they each get a bingo card (double sided).  I show the PPT.  They fill in 5 words for B.  Then 5 words for I.  etc. etc. etc.   This takes 10-15min....depending on the class.

This morning we had only time for one game of bingo (although they have filled in BOTH sides of their card).

At the end of class we went through the PPT and I pointed to words and they all recited them together.

*So, we did repetition, listening work, they all wrote 48 English words and they all said 48 English words.   The words are all from pages 181-187 in their text.

Lesson 11, Grade 2 - A look inside traditional korean life

for this lesson I did the listen and speak section in the book. Then i quickly taught them the difference between have to and must.

After which I asked them to write down 5 things that they have to do today, then i called on some students to read what they wrote. Asking them to speak in full sentences.

I then gave them a list of about 20 - 25 jobs and told them to choose one from the list and write down a few things that a person in that job must do. After they finished that, we played 20 questions using the jobs they chose...each question had 'have to' in it. When a student chose the correct job then they changed places with the student at the front.

it sounds a little boring but it worked really well with my students, I teach all boys...but it was simple enough for them all to join in.

Yes I have these books. they are interesting to say the least. I also think the content topics are pretty difficulty for non natives to understand. We sometimes get caught up in understand the material as oppose to practicing the meaning of the terms...

Grade 2 Lesson 11 Ideas
« Reply #299 on: November 16, 2011, 11:31:30 AM »
I take grammar points from each lessons' "Build Up-->Focus on Forms" page. Lesson 11 seems to be passive voice. I usually complete Let's Communicate section but I don't like them so I make my own stuff..

Here are some ideas for anyone working on Grade 2 Lesson 11:
1. Murder Mystery - ~was killed by_____ or ~was used to kill____.

2. The Lazy Worker Role play - I found this http://english-zone.com/teach/lazy-wrkr1.html
-There is also a list of other stuff for passive tense here: http://english-zone.com/index.php?ID=51
- you can make this activity easier for lower level student by providing a practice sheet with  bunch of verbs they can work together and write (i.e. write-->was written by)

I'll update later what I end up teaching, since this is for tomorrow's classes...wish me luck :P
