Thanks for all tips so far guys - these books are really driving me mad!

Attached review game for 3rd Grade Lessons 1,2 and 3 - who want's to be a millionaire style, hope that it's helpful.

Just about to begin the next chapter and it's not looking good has anyone attempted my foreign neighbors yet?

I've been sitting here all day deskwarming, doing paperwork, glancing over at my 3rd grade book wondering what in the world i'm going to do on Monday for a game/activity.

Has anyone attemped Lesson 4 (Our Foreign Neighbours) yet?
Looks like I'll be taking my book home this weekend to think of something.
Any tips for a game/activity would be much appreciated.

i have a lot of half ideas floating around.
1)   kind of guessing game/picture tour of the foreign areas in korea. along the lines of "where do you think this is?" , and then reveal they're all in korea...followed by something brilliant.

2) week 1: international tour of some obscure places, plus cultural  lessons.
week 2: have them make tourism commercials in groups using key phrases.
or

3) if your school actually provides you with supplies- make travel brochures/posters for countries they want to visit.

hope that's useful.

Wondering if anyone has come up with any fun auxiliary activities to go along with chapter 4 for grades 1 and 2, "Abracadabra" and " Advertisements and Our Life", respectively. 

Any simple ideas of how to spice these up?

For advertisements, I had my kids bring in colors (markers, colored pencils) and I had an advertisement contest.  I pree-taught some common sales superlatives and phrases (the best, cheapest, buy 2 get 1 free) and they had to think of a product, draw a picture, write two sentences and include superlatives.  After I had a best-ad contest where students couldn't choose their own ads.  Best team gets a prize.  The kiddies had a ball with that in most classes last year. For prep's sake, group them and give a sheet of A4 printer paper to each group.

For Abracadabra, I felt the 'focus on sounds' Tune-in portion was important, so I played a quick pronunciation game.  This section draws attention to 'a' sounds; long, short, and unrounded.  My kids are a bit stronger than last year's, so I'm gonna change the activity.  Basically, I showed a word, and every one in the group had to raise their hands and say if it was long, short, or unrounded, then pronounce it correctly.

hey guys and gals, only found this thread today (not a frequent waygook.org user... yet), i have the same text books. another teacher and i starting making our own videos after seeing the crappy tune-in alternatives. some of our videos are worse actually, but some received good laughs. i've uploaded the grade 2 lesson 3 video just in case some of you can still use it. have a look. i've also attached two activities to go with the video - one for beginners level students and one for advanced students.



Anyway, thanks to everybody for all the resources. i'll be using them from now on and contributing more of my own.

I put together a little activity to throw some movement into the classroom that gets the students practicing the language for 1st grade in chapter 4, Listen and Speak I (page 49).  Good for medium to high level, but could be modified for low level (you'll need more support in explaining the directions for low level, too).

Get students into groups if it is convenient, but I just keep them in their rows and have each row be a group. 

There are six different "character pages"; print them out and tape them to different areas of the room.  I covered the text with an additional flap of paper to discourage cheating.

There are two roles that every student will have at one point in the game: "writer" (student doing the listening and writing), and the "runner" (student moving to the character pages, reading them, and reciting the info back to the writer).

Give the first student in each group the worksheet; they will write first.  You may also tell each group to start on different "character pages" (group 1 - start with Mary, group 2 - Bob...) so that the runners aren't banging into each other.

The idea is that a student on the team will write while a different student runs to the correct character page, remembers the information on the character page, and then runs back to their teammate to recite the information.  There should never be more than ONE student from each team standing at a time - deduct points from any team with more than one student standing.

After the first student has written, they pass the paper to the next teammate and stand up to gather the info on the next character page (so the "writer" then becomes the "runner").

If you are playing in rows, to begin the game the last person in the line will be the "runner" for the writer (who is in first position).  In a circular group that won't matter!

The first team to complete there sheet wins!
